From Wolfgang's Vault, listen on-line

For centuries, people have celebrated Saint Patrick's Day, the feast day of Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. We've compiled a list of some of our own saints of Ireland, from Eddie Rabbitt, the son of Irish immigrants, to U2, the most successful Irish rock band of the past 30 years, and Oppenheimer, one of the most unique bands coming out of Northern Ireland today. We've also thrown in a few songs that are not by Irish artists, but do pay tribute to the Emerald Isle itself.

Music has long been a cornerstone of Irish culture and the artists featured here, along with countless others, find ways of incorporating some of the more traditional elements of Irish music into a more modern rock blueprint. In recent years, Irish music has blurred the lines between traditional and rock music, creating an entirely new sound.

This Saint Patrick's Day, may the luck of the Irish be with you as you immerse yourself in this playlist, perhaps over a nice pint of Guinness.

Other great musician is Gary Moore, I saw him live playing with Greg Lake at the Palladium in NYC when I was a NEw Yorker in 1981-1983, I think the show was in 1982; Keith Emerson's keyboard parts were replaced by Gary Moore, outstanding

Voodoo Recommends:

THE CHIEFTAINS featuring RY COODER - San Patricio (2010)

The musical souls of two nations, Ireland and Mexico, are movingly brought to life in San Patricio, the latest international collaboration by six-time Grammy winners The Chieftains - the leading practitioners of Irish traditional music for the past four decades. The album features multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Ry Cooder, another multiple-Grammy winner, who co-produced with The Chieftains' Paddy Moloney. It tells the nearly forgotten story of the brave San Patricio battalion - a downtrodden group of Irish immigrant conscripts who deserted the U.S. Army in 1846 to fight on the Mexican side against the invading Yankees in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).

Some greats mentioned above; Rory, Thin Lizzy, Them, Undertones..etc..

One poster mentioned a very underrated Irish rock outfit; The Boomtown Rats. Everyone knows "I don't Like Mondays" and "Rat Trap"; but after seeing Geldof in '04 promoting the reiisued Rats albums, and subsequently buying some - I couldn't believe how bloody wonderful they were!

"Tonic for the Troops" & "A Fine Art of Surfacing" are absolutely stellar albums. A truly great Irish band.

For anyone who doesn't know them, check link here to  "Diamond Smiles"  - pop gold imho

I LOVE the pipes. It's Larry's voice that took some doing.

Great live band though, as can be ascertained at BB King's this very evening.
