Well, as a bass player, I can tell you that Bill Wyman is a genius. He blew my mind, the stuff I heard him play here. He really doesn't get enough credit. The drums were amazing, but everyone knows that Charlie's the greatest.

Alas - you are correct!  Don Was spoke specifically of both Mick T and Bill.

I am quite sure they discussed recording and a general time frame on when they will get started. They have a new record contract, and Mick and Keith were in the studio together with Don Was. Naturally I'm sure they spoke of general plans for The Stones doing another record (quite perhaps they even set a definitive time scale) being as it's been a while and The Stones are planning to continue. How could they not talk of it ....at least some what??

However, nothing is ensuing at the moment as Keith said. If they were doing something studio wise he would of alluded to it. He didn't. He said in so many words that while he's itchin and ready nothing is occurring right now studio wise with them. He was pretty clear on that much.

Simple enough.

The contract covered the back catalog, and believe it or not upcoming studio albums as well. Nobody HAS to do anything in life your right. However not doing something can risk repercussions or cause inevitable consequences.

The record deal certainly covers upcoming studio releases by them so The Rolling Stones are under contract to record new studio albums with Universal. Exact details of the deal were not disclosed on exactly how many brand new studio albums, but the deal did consist of more than one studio release Universal stated.

I know, but I've yet to read anywhere that they are contractually obliged to make a fixed amount of new albums for Universal. As I interpret it, any new albums they DO choose to make within the period of this contract will be distributed by that label. £15 million over 5 years is a pretty paltry amount of a deal for a band of the Stones' pedigree, and doesnt suggest a lot of confidence in shifting too many records.

Thanks. At last, thats the first time I've read that. Even when this subject was discussed on here when it happened two years ago, I dont recall reading anything about new product.

The last time the Stones managed to churn out three studio albums in five years was 1986. Whoever thought they were capable of doing anything like that is living in cloud cuckoo land. Maybe its three albums of any description, in which case I suppose its possible that the Exile bonus CD will count.

Maybe thats why Jagger was uncharacteristically keen to do it. Then again, it can hardly count as part of their contract as Ronnie Wood isn't a band member on Exile.

If they make a new studio album, I agree it'll be on Universal. I honestly havent seen anything that says they're contracted to deliver them, though. And as they're now two years into a five year deal without a sniff of a new album, the chances of them delivering 'more than one' within that timeframe is pretty remote.

These sources state The Stones deal includes future "albums" or future "recordings" ...plural. So the deal was not presented/described to the public as the norm ...being a one, two, or three album deal (three being a standard for bigger acts) including rights to their back catalog as is normally disclosed.

* I understand your point though. Your sayin the contract probably states "IF" they do another album it will be handled under UMG but they do not HAVE to. I understand your point and it's a valid point. Still ... I see no evidence suggesting they won't and tons indicating future new records are (at present time at least) in the plans for them sooner or later.

That plus the undeniable fact that they're now a nostalgia act existing in an era where sales of recorded music (and especially recorded Stones music) are in the toilet.

The Stones have almost zero incentive to make new music from a commercial standpoint, and two studio albums in the last 15 years suggests that the creative or artistic reasons for doing so has all but dissipated.

In short, there ain't enough money in it for them. Revenue from touring outstrips the revenue from releasing a new record by about 20 to 1 now, whereas maybe 20-30 years ago they were on a similar level.

If they make a new record, its done primarily to 'justify' another long tour because admitting openly that they're an oldies act doesn't do much for their credibility. If they're going to make another record and then name the tour that follows it after it, then it entirely defeats the purpose if they're then going to play hardly anything from the album in question.

I'd love them to make another album, but if their self-belief in it is so low that they cant be arsed promoting it after being on the road for more than a couple of months, then why bother?

Oh, and if they ARE going to tour again behind a new release, for Christs sake, take a leaf out of Prince's book and include the new CD with every ticket purchase. I cant fathom how 'fans' can think nothing of forking out $500 for a concert ticket to see a band they apparently like, but cant spend $15 on the purchase of the CD the band are supposedly touring behind.  At least doing something like this a) gives the fans no excuse for looking bewildered at each other when the band play something new and b) gives the band no excuse for NOT playing something new. Their tickets are pricey enough and throwing in a CD isn't going to bankrupt them. It speaks volumes for how absurd things are that you can buy almost anything at a Stones concert that has their brand name except their music.

Yes but Mick Jagger is Mick Jagger and will be for the most part until the end of his life. He is going to want to at least make a new cd in order to get in the mind set, as well as promote the tour with versus being a nostalgia act alone.

Can't see them touring with nothing new studio wise. Even with Licks they gave us four new tunes in order to avoid the situation of them being touted as nothing but a nostalgia act going on a greatest hits tour.

As well I think Keith finally wants to write and record as well now (thankfully). Charlie would agree with both of them and Ronnie will do whatever ....hah.

Don't be so fooled. They still wanna make music as much as tour. How do I know? The answer is simple .... they do not necessarily HAVE to make a new album. They haven't for a good while. They could tour with no new album. It wouldn't bother them enough... but it does.

They still want to record and put out new product .... that is why they are choosing to do such. Remember .....they don't have to at this point. The Rolling Stones themselves, their management, and their financial folks are well aware of that. Yet they choose to go through this long writing, recording, and mixing process over months and months time... right there is a good indication ....they want to record new albums.... even if they haven't done such every year or every few years as they have in the past.
