If your definition of 'about to' is 'sometime in the next 12-18 months' then thats quite possible.

If it's this year you're thinking of, then I wouldnt hold your breath.

Exact details of the deal were not disclosed on exactly how many brand new studio albums, but the deal did consist of more than one studio release Universal stated.

And in yet more news hinting at greater things to come...

American Idol moved to a bigger stage this week as the Top 12 tackled the Rolling Stones. Ryan stared down Simon, Simon gave Crystal Bowersox some helpful tips and the kids were alright. (I know, I know: that’s the Who.) Amusingly, Idol couldn’t get the Stones to appear
but Jimmy Kimmel could. May 10-14 is Stones week on his late night talk show in celebration of the long-overdue reissue of their brilliant masterpiece Exile On Main Street. Different artists will cover songs from that album each night and apparently Mick Jagger and Keith Richards will appear
.

I know, but I've yet to read anywhere that they are contractually obliged to make a fixed amount of new albums for Universal. As I interpret it, any new albums they DO choose to make within the period of this contract will be distributed by that label. £15 million over 5 years is a pretty paltry amount of a deal for a band of the Stones' pedigree, and doesnt suggest a lot of confidence in shifting too many records.

Could you please show me a link to a story that stated that. I've certainly never seen one, and believe me I looked.

Why would someone say it was 'more than one studio release' and then 'not disclose' how many it was for. Every Stones album deal previously mentioned specifically how many new studio albums they were contracted to record, so why would this be a 'secret' all of a sudden? Its hardly something that needs to be kept quiet.

If they make a new studio album, I agree it'll be on Universal. I honestly havent seen anything that says they're contracted to deliver them, though. And as they're now two years into a five year deal without a sniff of a new album, the chances of them delivering 'more than one' within that timeframe is pretty remote.

The New York Times reported three new albums in five years "according to people with knowledge of the negotiations who were not authorized to speak about them publicly."

Nearly two years since that deal was inked, so three "new" albums in the next three years seems highly unlikely.
Maybe live or greatest hits releases will count towards that number...

No outright announcement on the Jimmy show - but certainly hints will be dropped, the summer will see more concrete plans forming.

It's gonna be amazing - the long Stones road is finally coming to an end, but they are gonna conclude in style worthy of true Rock n Roll royalty...

Thanks. At last, thats the first time I've read that. Even when this subject was discussed on here when it happened two years ago, I dont recall reading anything about new product.

The last time the Stones managed to churn out three studio albums in five years was 1986. Whoever thought they were capable of doing anything like that is living in cloud cuckoo land. Maybe its three albums of any description, in which case I suppose its possible that the Exile bonus CD will count.

Maybe thats why Jagger was uncharacteristically keen to do it. Then again, it can hardly count as part of their contract as Ronnie Wood isn't a band member on Exile.

I know to most of us fans that are 40+ the very idea of the boys being on Jimmy Fallon is insane, but it does make sense in the marketing world.

NBC - who owns/co-ops Universal - badly needs something headline making to repair its late night line up after the Leno/O'Brien debacle.

Fallon's audience tends to be college age to early 30s.  That is also the market the Stones need to draw from to make the Exile project a huge success and grow their own share of the music market.  Fallon on the other hand needs to pull from the 40+ market for his own ratings.

That's why it isn't Leno's show.  He has the 40+ market and has had no success at pulling from the younger market for years.

So if it goes well it is a win win for the record company and the Stones.  Even hinting around at another major announcement on Fallon's show is good for the suits.  More upcoming publicity for NBC/Universal.  They know they have the crown jewel of rock n roll in their back pocket and they are going to polish it up and use it.

I'm glad to see NBC/Universal thinking like this too.  CBS put the boys on 60 Minutes and the morning news show, but not much more that I remember.  Oh ya, that helps get them in front of a new audience.  60 Minutes was the lead in for Murder She Wrote *smacks forehead*, oh ya like Angela Landsberry fans didn't know who the Stones were.

These sources state The Stones deal includes future "albums" or future "recordings" ...plural. So the deal was not presented/described to the public as the norm ...being a one, two, or three album deal (three being a standard for bigger acts) including rights to their back catalog as is normally disclosed.

* I understand your point though. Your sayin the contract probably states "IF" they do another album it will be handled under UMG but they do not HAVE to. I understand your point and it's a valid point. Still ... I see no evidence suggesting they won't and tons indicating future new records are (at present time at least) in the plans for them sooner or later.

Thats fair enough, but I've still seen nothing that suggests they'll be breaking any contractual agreement if they choose to never make another studio album.

Any future plans are conditional.

And to use a quote from a link that Lefty sent me a few days ago

http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2008/07/26/stones-to-universal/

"Insiders know those records are probably not guaranteed and will probably never be recorded…"

I DO personally think they'll make another record, but I'd be surprised if it'll be any more than that.

I am quite sure another studio album is in the cards. I am hoping for two...

If it weren't for their age I would be certain. However their age is the big factor. Nowadays it is a reality versus the "how long will they decide to continue?" thing it's been of the last twenty years...  Now, the boys are going into their seventies (geez my kneez ...are we actually talkin about The Stones in their seventies....) so naturally time is the reality in the recent scenario versus the debate of the past.
