'American Idol' Top 12 week will be music of the Rolling Stones

EW has learned that American Idol’s Top 12 contestants will perform the music of the Rolling Stones next week. During an ad break at the top 8 guys performance show, Ryan Seacrest taped a radio promotion in which he mentioned that the first week for the 12 Idol finalists will feature songs by the iconic British rock group.

First Justin Timberlake, now this. Before that Timberlake crap, I always secretly admired the Stones because of all the huge acts, they seemed slightly less commercial. I know that sounds hard to believe but you never saw them on late night shows and what not. If compared to people like Paul McCartney, Sting, and Elton John, the Stones just seemed to have a little bit more integrity (yes I know all about State of Shock and other horrors) but they just seemed like less flagrant whores. If any of them show up, it will just be a new low to add to Timberlake, Rolling Stones wine, etc.

“American Idol” Set to Tackle Songs By the Rolling Stones

Two years ago American Idol celebrated the music of the Fab Four, and next week the show’s Top 12 will pick up that rockin’ tradition by belting out songs by “the Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World,” the Rolling Stones. Host Ryan Seacrest made the announcement of next week’s musical theme on a radio promotion taped during last night’s episode, Entertainment Weekly reports. As it’s still too early on in the competition for celebrity mentors, it’s highly unlikely Mick Jagger or Keith Richards will participate, though Richards mentoring the kids on partying and excess for an hour would likely be more entertaining than the performances themselves.

We won’t know which contestants are singing what Stones classics until next week, but we’re already placing bets on what we expect to hear. On the ladies’ side, we anticipate “Satisfaction,” “Tumbling Dice,” “Time Is On My Side,” “Gimme Shelter” (if a contestant is brazen enough to handle both Mick and the female leads) and, thanks to Susan Boyle, “Wild Horses.” For the men, we’re thinking “Brown Sugar,” “Miss You,” Sympathy For The Devil,” “Angie,” “Honky Tonk Women” and “Waiting On A Friend.” “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” seems destined for the group performance, and let’s just add that any contestant who mines Goats Head Soup gets our automatic vote.

Great news! I love American Idol, and I watch it every week, so I'll be SURE to tune in for Stones night! It WOULD be cool if MICK makes an appearance! L'wren lives in L.A. so it's right near Hollywood where the show is! MICK can teach these kids how it's done, and done properly! I would love to hear MICK critique his own songs, that would be too funny!

My prediction for the next idol is Casey James ~ the gorgeous blond guy, he is so cool, I hope he wins! Andrew Garcia reminds me of a young Jerry Garcia, take off his glasses and grow his hair long, and if he sang a Dead song that would be awesome! I also like the big black dude Michael Lynch, he can belt out a tune! As for the girls, nobody seems good enough, IMO.

In the unlikely event Jagger will have anything to do with this manufactured crap, which is the antithesis of everything that rock n roll is supposed to represent, then it really would be time to give it up.

This won't help sell the reissue of Exile, fwiw. It might help something like Hot Rocks or Jump Back, but that's it.

Not surprised at all. In the end, we live in an era where the shite that is American Idol is somehow celebrated and apparently "credible" music critics and "experts" extol the musical merits of crap like Madonna and Justin Timberlake. It has always been like this but sometime after the mid 90s, popularity started to become equated with quality to a ridiculous degree. What I find very odd though about Mick is that he seems to have a soft spot for these things and public popularity (Keith is the pretty much the same but hides behind his image) but he won't go for something like a stripped down album (really stripped down, not a Bigger Bang) which will probably lead to more awards like Grammys in the same way that Dylan won for Time Out of Mind. Not that the Stones should only do stuff like that because their variety is one of their main strengths but this American Idol shite is an absolute disgrace and anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

We've lived long enough that rock n roll isn't dangerous.  America has confused being infamous for famous. Octomom, John and Kate, people faking their kid floating away, etc.  So now the Stones are letting the Bible, as Keith called it,  be used on AI.  ICK!

I played Mother's Little Helper for my youngest son the other day.  He didn't get it.  That was released before I was born, but by the time I got into the Stones and heard that the first time around 1979 I could still see how releasing a song with those lyrics was a risk that most artists wouldn't take.  Midnight Rambler scared the crap out of me when I first heard it.  Satisfaction is still one hell of a statement.  

The marketing gal in me knows this is part of the publicity machine for the Exile re-release.  I just can't help being a little sad about it.

I've never gotten into AI, I'm for the old school, that an artist or band pay their dues to get where they are, instead of this overnight success, some of them end up in celebrity rehab, it's good The Stones music is acknowledged, I would imagine it would be their greatest hits kind of songs.
I like the earlier comment, that Mick should bitch slap Simon, I can't stand that guy, he thinks he's a authority on music, all these judges, what gives them the right to be judges, some of them ain't even musicians,  Ellen Degeneres? the only thing she can judge, is how people get up & dance to the music, like she does.
