I've never been to Penn's Peak! That sounds cool, is it in the Poconos?

Yep.  On top of a hill in Jim Thorpe.

Beautiful room, great sound, 1600 capacity.

Don't disregard the studio stuff.   Workingman's Dead, American Beauty, From the Mars Hotel, and Blues for Allah are all worth having.

Absolutely. This is a great place to start:

...

And "Garcia" by the Jerry Garcia Band is great stuff too:

...

Have fun...these boys have a LOT of music floating around.

Too true, GTRM.  American Beauty is one of my favorite albums ever, by any group.  Not less than stellar song anywhere to be found, even Pigpen's.

Glad you pointed out "Garcia," which is a true lost classic.  Despite the fact that more than half the album became staples of the Dead's set, the other half is so darn weird an experimental, a lot of great stuff got lost especially The Wheel at the end.  I have to correct you though (being a pedantic poophead) by saying that the JGB wasn't formed yet, and on the contrary, Jerry played every instrument himself on the album, even piano which he had little previous experience, except for bringing in Billy the K on drums.

I'd also like to point out Weir's Ace, which WAS mostly a Dead album in disguise, from the next year.  Again, a half dozen keepers in the midst, including a version of Playing in the Band that is thought by many the group's best-ever effort at achieving "Dead-ness" in the studio.

You rock!

JGB is whole different story...I always was a bigger fan of garcia Band than the Dead...ever since they played at school...I have NEVER been disappointed when seeing the Jerry Garcia Band...his B'Way stint was magical!!!

Thanks for the info, Zack. I'd also recommend Robert Hunter's "Tiger Rose."  The song "Rose of Sharon" has always been a favorite of mine. It's downright beautiful. As you no doubt know, Robert Hunter was an early member of the Dead and wrote some of their most well-known songs. Jerry Garcia, as well as other band members, play on this album.

...

And I can't forget a personal favorite, "Old And In The Way," one of Garcia's projects with David Grisman and other notable musicians. I'd highly recommend this as well.

...

Throwaway, you have your work cut out for you, that's for sure!

Robert Hunter was the Dead's lyricist until the end.

He was inducted into the RRHOF as a band member - the only non-performer to be awarded that honor.

I had no idea, Lefty. I'm very pleased to hear that.

This is a great album:
...

Wolfgang's Vault has a coupla Nicky Hopkins-era JGB shows:
12.19.75
12.20.75

The 12.20 show includes a cover of 'Let's Spend The Night Together'...

And this!  Kind of like classic Cream on valium.  First bit - long jam - end bit.   Wonderful laid back, jazzy vibe and eclectic song choice.  Covers range from Dylan, Los Lobos, Peter Tosh, Beatles, and perhaps the high point, Bruce Cockburn's Waiting for a Miracle.  I saw Cockburn as an opening act for someone in the 90s, and when he introduced the song, it was clear that Jerry putting that tune on his album was the greatest honor anyone had ever bestowed on him.  (Probably made him a few bucks, too!)

Here's one for ya. Imagine being stuck on a ferry boat circling Manhattan for hours with the Grateful Dead, Bo Diddley - and the Hell's Angels for security. And Jerry Garcia walking around in a clown suit. I must have thought I was indestructible back then.

Holy shit, now THIS I gotta see! I'd love to see the performance clips, considering the memories I have of events I witnessed on that little excursion aren't even fit to repeat here. God, was I a ballsy little fucker back then...
