As a fan of the wonderful Jackie Greene, I have heard a few of the Dead's covers in his sets.  I've liked most of what I've heard, but this is my first real exposure to the group's material (other than maybe "Truckin").  I really like "Scarlet Begonias," "US Blues," "Sugaree," and "Peggy-O."  If there are any Deadheads out there, can you point me to some albums/songs with similar vibes as these tunes?  TIA!

for commercial release..One From The Vaults...at the great American Music hall is AMAZING...as is Without a Net from 1989/1990...and the Cornell 1977...even the parts that Donna Jean destroys are fantastic.

As for Studio stuff...leave it alone...they were a live band w/ label obligations...

Sweet.  Downloading 5/8/77 right now.  Any specific live tracks that were killers?  As in, the "Midnight Rambler" or "Happy" or "Respectable" of the Dead?

Does this mean you're a very young person?

I saw my fist Grateful Dead show 37 years ago:

Yep, it's pretty cool hearing his studio renditions of these songs, which are actually a bit different than how he does them live.

My first ever concert was seeing the Winos when I was 5, so I'm a bit young to have seen the Dead, only really been exposed to them through artists covering them (RA+ The Cardinals, Jackie).

Don't disregard the studio stuff.   Workingman's Dead, American Beauty, From the Mars Hotel, and Blues for Allah are all worth having.

Studio stuff isn't bad, so far.  Obviously, I like the live stuff more; some jams have grown on me, while others I like from the first listen.  Downloading Europe 72 ATM.  Looking forward to their covers of songs like "You Win Again" and "It Hurts Me Too."

Love the Dead! Well, I should preface that. I used to love the Dead, but once Jerry died I lost interest in the crapolla that has followed. I went to the first Further Fest as Liberty State Park. Watching them perform in the shadow of Lady Liberty was great, but all I could think about was how much better it would have been had Jerry been there. Plus the scene changed so much after 1987 with the release of In The Dark, and the single Touch Of Grey that I started to get a little weary of the patcholli reeking "new" Dead Heads looking for "a miracle". Not to mention that my 1967 pop top VW mirco bus was broken into at a Chaple Hill, NC. show, and I was robbed of a Samsonite suitcase with about 400 soundboard tapes, and about 75 tie dye shirts that I was selling to cover the cost of that particular jaunt of the tour. Kinda left me with a bad taste in my mouth for all these new acolytes to the band.

Jizzy, is that '77 show you mention the Cornell show? I seem to remember that date. Anyway, if that's the show I think than that is the best Scarlett/Fire that I have ever heard! The whole show is stunning, as were so many of those 77 shows.

I saw the Dead over 100 times, and wish that they still brought me the kind of excitment they did all those years ago. I still listen to them on ocassion, but I have no desire to be a part of the scene anymore. As Holden Caulfield would say, they're all phonies.

I retract what i said...thinking back...Blues, Workingman and American Beauty were fantastic......thanks for reminding me...the 3 nites in Miami in spring 1994 were amazing...i was at thse shows and the first two nites brought tears to my eyes at times...

btw...The Last Time has /was a staple in the Dead set list for a long time...just trying to remain RS related...I believe they played it in Tampa just before the miami Shows...w/ the Black Crowes opening

Wow! I didn't know the weather details. Crazy. That tape is an absolute must have though. I never really made any of the West Coast shows. The furthest west I ever traveled for the band was Red Rocks in Co. Great shows there, and man what a cool venue.

Oh, and Paranoid Android, I was at those Miami shows as well. They were great! I think it was night 2 when Jerry laid down a brilliant Standing On The Moon. I was also at the Orlando show that year. Quite a riot outside of the venue that night. We left the show with clouds of tear gas in the air! Kinda sucked really. Not to mention that Bill's father had passed away that week, so the first show was canceled.

Don't get me started...that Standing on the Moon iss where I lost it !!! It was actually the first nite...the 2nd nite had the just as beautiful Stella Blue...
I also thought the weather at Cornell was a myth...but who knows.
I totally forgot about the riots at Orlando...I was not there.but recall hearing the stories...

The Drums of that Miami show were amazing as well...they did the whole surround sound thing and the Mothership Blasting off (ok...maybe the acid was really , really good) was the best!!!

I got a ticket for FURTHER this weekend in AC, a 'comp' ticket at the Taj Mahal and REALLY looking forward to it! It's been completely sold out for months! They ALWAYS sell their tickets at very reasonable prices, usually under $50, even at The Beacon.  That band is considerate of their fan's wallets, unlike OUR band who rips us off with outrageous ticket prices. I'm sure Further can get more money, but they dont want to beat up the fans. I appreciate that!

I saw Furthur in December.

Loved seeing Phil and Bobby, but had a hard time wrapping my head around  the "Jerry" guy from Dark Star Orchestra.
He sounded and played a bit too much like the real Jerry.
