The 'Keith never phoning but always faxing' thing has been something that's been around for years. I remember either Bill or Charlie mentioning it ages ago. A bit of bizarre and spooky timing that it pops up in this interview a few hours after I made a crack in the Ronnie thread about Katia only turning to Ronnie to help with a music career because Keith wouldnt return her faxes.

I think its quite funny that in this day and age, and with all their financial trappings that two members of the biggest band in the world dont even use computers, mobile phones or in Keith's case, a landline. He'll probably turn up for the next recording sessions in a horse and cart.

If someone was interviewing Barack Obama for a style magazine, who the hell would be buying the magazine wanting to read about economic issues or health care? It's a 'specialist' type of magazine. And if you had five or ten minutes to interview him for a type of publication where he rarely gets interviewed, a good interviewer would NOT be wasting his opportunity asking questions which have been asked by a hundred other political interviewers, where the answer is already public knowledge and have no relevance to the reasons why people buy the publication. Had you ever heard of this magazine before yesterday? Me neither.

Charlie Watts' world doesn't revolve exclusively around the Rolling Stones, and this publication isn't aimed at the sort of people for whom a Rolling Stones tour appears to be the most important thing in the universe. The Stones aren't touring for the forseeable future. So what is there to discuss?

Ian Billen wrote on Feb 17th, 2010 at 9:34pm:

Agreed. BTW when was the interview? As he states ....they are currently not doing anything. Simple enough answer for me... (although disappointing... geez what are these guys waiting for.... they surely seem in no hurry to record).

Ian

the interview is published in the 'March 2010' edition, so I'd imagine it was done very recently.

With no tour plans on the horizon, there would be absolutely no incentive to record anything. They'll only do so to have something to promote a tour with.

I enjoyed the interview, but I don't believe for a minute that any of the Stones would forget the name of Let It Bleed. Well...Ronnie perhaps, but that's another story.

Not to mention the fact that no one cares about Obama's style. They want to know what he's doing for the country. Likewise, someone interviews a Rolling Stone. Guess what most people care about. War horses couldn't drag me away

I'm not perturbed at all, Ian. I can empathise 100% with what you're getting at. I'm more interested in a new Stones record/tour than Charlie's choice of suits, just as you are.

I just think some people miss the context of the interview, considering the time restraints under which it was done (ie, a very brief phone call) , the type of publication and the fact that the target readership aren't Stones fanatics like we are.

So, taking that into account, it's maybe a bit optimistic to expect someone who's not a music journalist and who isn't writing for a music magazine to be wanting to know specifics of Charlie's future plans. He probably doesn't even know them himself!

Haha. No, their tour opener will be Glastonbury. Again.

A headliner for a Slane show this summer (more specifically in August) is still being negotiated. There aren't that many big tours lined up for this summer, though, for established acts, apart from a return visit by U2, so it could end up being someone a bit younger, I think.

I can't imagine I'll ever be back at a show there again. I'd never miss a Stones or Springsteen show in Ireland as a matter of principle, but as I can't envisage either of them returning there, I'd really have no motivation to go.

Strong points and that makes alot of sense.  Your probably right. The chief editor may of even set the criteria for the journalist to trying to stay on topic of Charlie as much as possible and his fashion and not so much The Stones upcoming plans.

Oh well. Way too much from me and started here bout something that was never even asked or printed.

....I don't try to do this .... it just happens (hah?...).

What a great read, thanks LJ for pointing me to it.

I can more than get why people my age and older NEVER want to use a computer or a cell phone.  Money has nothing to do with it.  It is so confusing to people who have never used it, mainly due to there being NOTHING that you can relate it to that you've done before.  Nothing.  I seem to get more lost each time I go on-line rather than "learn" more and move forward.  There's no moving forward for me, I learn less.  Nothing that happens (goes wrong) is similar to what went wrong before and the language it uses to communicate is impossible to understand.  If it wasn't for my love of music and wanting to come here and see Bob's coming and goings and being able to email people I care about I would throw this thing in the trash post haste!  I remember hearing Oprah say (about a year ago now) that she had JUST finally gave in and bought a cell phone.  Judge Judy does not use a computer and never will.  And I just bet Bob doesn't like them either.

You all are so savvy with this thing, but not everyone is that's for dang sure.

Thanks again for making sure I'd catch Charlie's interview LJ!  I read it today during my lunch and was thinking of you.

He's so FUNNY!  piss off I love deadpan humor and he's truly great at it. really?

Wink
