robbie, '79 was probably the last time you had a record above .500... 1879, that is. are the pirates cursed because of the steelers' success? discuss.

meanwhile, classic bert. i remember it just as if it were yesterday:

Starbie, not until the 2005 Super Bowl, neither the Steelers or the Pirates won a championship since 1979.  They both won it all that year.  A young Moonie and his even younger brother hit the jackpot buying and reselling World Series tickets to a bunch of drunken yinzers underneath the Fort Duquesne Bridge.

Cubs Acquire Garza From Rays

Buster Olney updates the latest on the Rays trading SP Matt Garza and two minor leaguers to Cubs for five players

The Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs have agreed to a multi-player deal that will bring right-handed pitcher Matt Garza to Chicago, according to a major league source.

The deal, which has been agreed to pending physicals, sends right-handed pitcher Chris Archer, outfielder Brandon Guyer, catcher Robinson Chirinos, shortstop Hak-Ju Lee and outfielder Sam Fuld to Tampa for Garza, minor league outfielder Fernando Perez and another minor leaguer.

Archer, 22, combined to go 15-3 with 2.34 in 28 games between Single-A Daytona and Tennessee, and was the Cubs' 2010 minor league pitcher of the year. Archer was acquired by the Cubs in a trade that sent popular utility man Mark DeRosa to the Cleveland Indians.

Guyer batted .344 with 13 home runs and 58 RBIs for Double-A Tennessee in 2010. The 24-year old was the Cubs' minor league player of the year.

Lee batted .282 and stole 32 bases for Single-A Peoria.

Fuld played in 98 games for the Cubs between 2007-10. He batted .299 in 65 games in '09.

The Cubs and at least three other teams had been negotiating with the Rays about Garza since the December winter meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Garza, 27, is coming off his best season, compiling a 15-10 record with a 3.91 ERA. Garza averaged 6.6 strikeouts and 2.77 walks per nine innings. Hitters batted .248 against Garza in 2010.

Tampa, in the mode of retooling the next few seasons, was willing to trade Garza for top young talent. The Rays were looking to get a shortstop, catcher and some top-caliber young pitching in return for Garza.

Outstanding.  The Spitter will not get so many chances @ Fenway.  What are the Rays thinking?

Re-tooling I would think. They picked up some nice prospects in this deal. Making moves like the Marlins to save money. What will be your Sox payroll this year? Just south of a billion??..lol

Letting Dunn slip away, dealing Willingham, picking up LaRoche, and grossly overpaying for Werth: seems like they're going to end up paying more for a not-significantly-better offense. I don't get it.

Actually those moves are not as bad as they appear. Dunn never hit in the clutch and lost games with poor D. Got a good pitching prospect for Willingham and when you are bad ya got to over pay for guys like Werth..although would rather have them land Crawford. losing Strasburg was huge but this franchise is jinxed so no surprise. At least ownership spent some $ to try and change the losing culture.

Werth was pretty bad with RISP last year, although he had key hits toward the end of the season. Anyway, I seriously doubt he'll hit as many homers or drive in as many runs as Dunn did. Werth had 85 RBI last year in a hitter's park, and in a lineup stacked with quality bats. He'll give you good defense and speed on the basepaths, but he's simply not the kind of franchise player that a contract of that magnitude would suggest...

Given Strasberg's absence this year, the Nats needed a quality starter more than a Jayson Werth. They took a run at Greinke, apparently, but that didn't pan out. ...

On a side note, I think the NL East has an extraordinary amount of good pitchers this year -- maybe the best in baseball -- with the glaring exception of the Nats. It just looks to me like they're gong to get chewed up again.

No doubt about that Mel...another long season without the Stras buzz isn't looking like fun...but heck I have been with this sad sack team since Spos in 1969 so qhat's another 5 yrs or so?
