The Rolling Stones - rare January 1967 footage

Just received a dvd from IORR forum member Palace Revolution 2000(Many thanks!!!) featuring rare footage from Italian TV of the group backstage at the London Palladium and then at Brian's Courtfield Road flat where we hear Brian play parts of Ruby Tuesday on piano.

There's other footage at them at work in Olympic, Albert Hall amongst other stuff which has been seen elsewhere.

Very cool footage so it is, will need some time to get it from the DVD and on to youtube or whatever.  In the meantime here's some screen grabs from the footage.

Michael took a number of photos this day too, some of which appear in the Early Stones - Terry Southern/Michael Cooper book.

Wow. Cant wait to see that. Thanks.

Unfortunately, the infamous 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium' footage (from 22.1.67) appears to be lost or wiped along with most of the UK TV appearances in the 60's (this show was ITV however, and not BBC) - only the audio has survived.

The Stones performed on three TV shows in 11 days in January 1967. Video of only one of the broadcasts remains

15/1/67 - Ed Sullivan Show (CBS-TV,New York) - Lets Spend 'Some Time' Together/Ruby Tuesday  (taped 13/1/67. Video still available

22/1/67 -  'Sunday Night At The London Palladium' (ITV, London) - Lets Spend The Night Together/Ruby Tuesday/Connection/It's All over Now (the last song in a pretty unique arrangement). The Stones then provoked a bit of outrage by refusing to join the rest of the performers in the traditional finale where everyone would stand on a revolving stage and wave farewell. Only the audio of the Stones' performance remains.

26/1/67 - 'Top of The Pops' (BBC-TV, London) - Lets Spend The Night Together.
Like all but five Stones' appearances on this show between 1964 and 1971, this edition of the show was wiped in the 70's when the BBC decided to erase thousands of hours of archives to free up some storage space. However, the Stones' performance DOES exist on video - because the performance was shown again a few times, one of which was the show's Christmas Day 1967 broadcast, which DOES remain in the archives.

The same fate befell the band's last two performances on TOTP in April 1971. Both the 15.4.71 edition (where they performed 'Brown Sugar') and the 22.4.71 edition (where they performed 'Bitch' and 'Wild Horses' in what was a short-lived 'album slot' feature of the show) have both been wiped. However, the 15.4.71 performance was shown again a few times, including the Christmas edition, and thats the one that's been shown widely ever since. Only the audio remains of the 22.4.71 performance. Strangely the entire 29.4.71 broadcast remains and has been shown on UK tv since then (UK Gold showed it in 1994 ) - and includes the Faces doing two songs in the 'album slot'.

Unfortunately many of the band's classic and iconic TOTP performances appear to be lost for good - such as the performance of 'Paint It Black' from 1966 (with Brian sitting cross legged playing sitar) and the performance of 'Honky Tonk Women' from July 1969 where the band played the song with a picture of Brian, who had died the previous day, over the back of the stage set. (The existing TOTP clip of the band playing 'Honky Tonk Women' comes from a performance dated 12.12.69, filmed for the Christmas show)

I can't wait to see that too, it's a damn crime that all that footage is lost, they didn't have home video recorders in those days, so I guess nobody would have it.

Yep, and there's quite a few nice pieces of footage from the early to mid 70's (eg some Old Grey Whistle Test interview & live clips plus the 1 hour pro shot of raw news footage from Knebworth) which would never have seen the light of day but for the initiative of a friend of mine who worked for the BBC and who about 15-20 years ago took advantage of a slipshod filing system and temporarily borrowed the master tapes to make copies for posterity -  just in case the great minds at the Beeb decided that another cull of the archives was necessary.

Here it is!

http://rapidshare.com/files/351385564/stones_67_wmv.wmv.html

I don't have an account so only 10 people can download it before the link expires.  Hopefully others with an account can create a more permanent download link!?

I put it on my photobucket as well so more folks can watch it straight away. Not sure if the photobucket link has all of it, perhaps they have a limit, it should be 13 minutes long.

Thanks Gazza for this, I did a search to find out about that footage going by the title, it's in Italian that most of the language is done, here's a link, have to move further down the page to get information about the film.

Some Information copied about the film from that link.

"Yeah it's great Majesty. It is pretty short, but really vintage. I know you are particularly deep into the 66-68 era. There is some super cool footage of them working in the studio. Keith and Brian in ruffled shirts; Brian at vibes, Keith on Bass. Bill is doing something. There is so much cigarette smoke, and sound baffles that they are always snaking around. But they seem to be totally happy working. Then it shift to the house (you're right it is Courtfield). The Stones are all there plus friends. It is for sure his house and not backstage @ Palladium. I thought maybe the Italian TV had gotten it wrong, but the interviewer chick is right in there with them. She leans on the piano next to a waterpipe while Brian plays it. he tells her they will go on recording in London, then come to Italy in March for the first time, and then finally get to do the film that "all the papers had been talking about for 3 years". Could that be "Only Lovers Left Alive"? Then she asks what they read ; comic books or Kerouac? Jagger says his mom read Kerouac when he was a baby, and asks her if she knows Ginsberg and "Cinderlla". Then it shifts to Keith who is laying back playing a Hummingbird, it looks like. She asks him about the Beatles and about them helping the Stones early on. He doesn't react at first, then says "Yeah, what a nice little story you tell me; especially with all the battle they have given us over the new music we have created; now it will be up to us to help them".Then Brian does the dedication, and it is more great studio footage. I love this 67 studio stuff. Jagger putting on headphones. But I especially love all the smoke.I would be happy to send you a copy btw."

>> more great studio footage <<

the studio footage is promo clips for Ruby Tuesday and LStNT that were shown on various tv shows at the time. they're really hard to find in decent condition - what Palace Revolution and His Majesty/Philip have shared with us (thanks & praises!) is better quality than usual.

and the Palladium and Courtfield Road stuff is fascinating.  i've read that Keith and Brian were tripping their brains out at the Palladium ... what a year 1967 was ... hail hail Rolling Stones
