i guess some of you know the winter olympics are about to start up in vancouver, canada in a few days.

any people care for this and what are some of your favorite events?

some of mine are ....the bobsled, especially the luge.  all of the snowboarding events...the ski jumping and the speed skating.  i love to see Apollo Reed skate and i hope he does well.  he is a heavily favored.  i also enjoy the womans figure skating, think legs

Are you fucking serious?

I like the figure skating - male, female and couples.  Let's hope no one channels Tonya Harding this year.  Did you mean Apollo Ohno instead of Reed?

My son is an emergency paramedic at the bottom of the bobsled/luge run. He has spent 2 years working on the track preparations and updating his medical training. Please note folks the City of Vancouver will not have snow and the opening ceremonies are indoors in a dome. The main outside events will be held where my son lives about 2 hours north in Whistler where there are mountains and plenty of snow.

Speed skating is one of the biggest sports in the Netherlands, so in the past few editions the national team picked up quite a few medals. Personally I don't care for it that much, but the Winter Olympics are the most important series, so I'll check those out. And a dude I interviewed twice for a magazine is a dark horse for the 10.000 meters, so that's cool.

I love the Olympics....
everthing about it: the pomp, over-the-top commentary, the stories about young Romanian skaters with Olympic dreams walking miles and miles just to train in some facility in the nearest village ...love it!
What sucks is that Sasha Cohen didn't qualify....she's amazing, but that young Korean girl is amazing too, so we'll see.
Love the snowboarding and can't wait to see Shaun White up the ante in tricks this year....
Sadly, I think the Olympics is a little lost on younger generations....

The games are being played in the Canucks' building.
The International Ice Hockey Federation agreed to keep the North American rink size.

Saved millions on a refit of the arena, and allows more fannies in $eat$.

OK folks here is a picture of my son and I summer of 2008 inside the just completed luge/bobsled track. As noted before he will be a paramedic at the bottom of the runs so hopfully we won't have to see him rush out to help an injured athlete. We were going to take more pics but a moment later a bear showed up on the track 100 yards up so we got outta there!  lol btw I'm the old fat guy!!!

I think the silliest winter sport is the Biathlon...it's like a made up sport...you shoot your rifle and cross country ski to the next target range...who does that?!? It's like they toss in the XC skis just to have the event in winter.

substitute roller blades...and it becomes a summer sport...use a skateboard and it becomes an extreme sport etc...actually...that last combo would be kinda cool...but better air guns and you shoot at each other!!!

How awful! Gimmekeef, is there any way to make this luge safer at this late date? I read it was the fastest course ever.

Gimmekeef, your son was the first person I thought of when I heard this devastating news after coming home from work tonight. Sad Oh my, I'm so sorry for all involved. What a sad, tragic beginning to the Olympics....Sad I hope your son is ok, having to deal with all of this....Sad

I realized last nite why i enjoy the Winter Olympics better than the summer...even though, I enjoy more of the summer events...the fact there there is no real HYPE and BRANDING of an AMERICAN DREAM TEAM...

I love how the NHL takes a hit for all the EURO players to go play along side of their countrymen...like it's an honor to do so, because it is...as if it is the NHL's multi-nationalistic duty to release them...for the 3 weeks.

Also...who's rooting for Ethiopia...I know i am!!!

Whew..been a rough few hours since the luge accident. My son is still somewhat in shock as I spoke to him this morning. He didnt sleep much and called me at 6 am west coast time. He was heading back to the luge track to man his post. Hopefully to work the rest of the games in obscurity.

Yeah that's a tough way to get started. But they are going ahead with the Luge competition. They're going to build up the wall a little bit that's all. Hope your son does'nt face anymore situations like that. But from what I heard they were on the scene within a minute. So their wasn't much anybody could do.

i thought last nights ceremonies were to long.  1 hour of pregame information into 4 hours of ceremonies.  i like the joni mitchael clouds piece.  the images were really well done last night.  i think i heard they spent 20 million on it.  another thing i think is rather a waste is having to burn 4 torches...i think it is a waste of oil or whatever it is they burn in those things.  1 flame is enough for me.

i saw the footage of that luge guy who died.  what a way to go.  90 mph hitting a structural I beam...must have cracked himself into 20 pieces.  sick.

I agree with SCL's comments.  I hope they pad the poles beside the track HEAVILY.  How could this obvious danger not have been noticed?  A very sad ending to a young man who worked so hard just to reach the Olympics.  You can be proud of your son, gimmekeef.  He's a caring, brave young man and I hope with time this event will only make him stronger.

i think a heavily padded pole ain't going to do shit if you hit it at 90+mph.  a better way would be to install netting of some type.  especially since this seems to be a dangerous curve.  i understand the luge event is scheduled for this evening

Reports are that the wall in Curve 16 of the luge track will be raised, and the "ice profile" changed.

Today's event will take place as scheduled.

The REALLY puzzling, and sad thing, is that there have been tons of crashes on this luge run for ages now. And many {one guy was knocked unconscious} just in the last few days of practice. And yet they say the track was not responsible for the man's death...?

I do hope, so very much, that the rest of the games go on without incident. I can't imagine what a horrific experience that was for your son, gimmekeef. Sad But the others are right---the aid was swift, the actions taken were accurate...there was just nothing that could have been done to save him. I also can't imagine how hard it is for your son to take up position again, and have this terrible tragedy in the back of his mind...{or the front}. Sad

OK they have made some adjustmenst to the luge. the area where the fellow went off the track has been walled in. I also believe the men are now leaving from the lower womens area and speeds have dropped back to mid 80's where they traditionally have been. Hopefully remedies that will work and provide better safety.

I'm sorry for the poor athlete and his team and family, I don't suppose a flimsy helmet and no other bodily protection but aerodynamic lycra is going to offer much protection at 90mph...Also sorry for your poor son, gimmekeef, what a traumatic tragedy to have to go through, poor kid!....

Does anyone have another link to the snowboarding? The video has been removed from Youtube and I LOVE snowboarding but we don't have SKY or any other sports subscriptions on our telly... Smiley

Yeah I thought I was going to be in luck with an Olympics actually in my time zone. But NBC (nothing but commercials) has decided that in the instant information age,it really isn't important to show events live. That was clever

Yeah, really. I like snowboard cross better---the only problem I see with ski cross is the length of the skis---much easier to get tangled up with your neighbor! A lot of closer passes and such in snowboard. But.....I still liked it. Smiley

Looking like maybe a USA vs Russia hockey gold game. If Miller stays hot US can take it. My home Canucks continue to be far too gracious hosts in these games and can't seem to finish. good action though and you guys are right the ski cross was great.

Well today is the 30 yr anniversary of the Miracle on Ice game. While those were amateaurs and these guys are pros. It's still fun to watch a team that wasn't expected to be this good, compete as well as they have. US vs Russia.....Deja Vu all over again.

Canada will have to beat germany on tuesday while other big teams rest. then they need to win 3 more in a row for gold. likely Russia/sweden and US again. very tough road as the other 3 are very very good teams.

i used to ride [snowboard] when i was younger...1990 until like '94.  it is a great sport but very demanding on the body...alot of twisting and turning and you calves get tired quicky.  i am not about to say it is a young mans sport bucause you can take it for what it is...you can be as agro as you want.  riding is way more exciting than skiing.  the lift tickets in ny are very expensive....45 to 50 dollars a day for 1 adult.

I started skiing alpine in early '72 and nordic in Dec. '72, but haven't done either in the last ten years.  I need to go!

Hey platter and wild bill:
I suppose any alpine sport is usually really expensive to do, for me it involves planeflights, hotel, skipass and the whole kaboodle, you don't get much change from 1000£ for a lousy week, which is exhorbitant. I always wonder how it works out for people who actually live "locally" to snowy mountains, presumably the liftst must be cheaper for them??? Caught a documentary on Shaun White on You Tube the other night. Apparently he was a really sickly, weedy child until the age of six and spent an awful lot of time in hospitals, hence his involvement with charities devoted to sick children. Then his dad bought him a snowboard at age 9 and by age 13 he went professional, nowadays earning over 10 million $ a year. He seems such a nice kid and what he does with that board makes me develop bowel movements like Joey whenever I see him, he is truly awesome... They also showed this halfpipe he had engineered and built specially for him really high up some mountain, so he could work on his tricks in peace without distractions-reached by helicopter only!

By far the best moment to date in these games:

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – When it was over, when Joannie Rochette had poured every bit of her heavy heart into the performance of her life, when the entire Pacific Coliseum had come unglued, cheering, stomping and crying throughout, the 24-year-old bent over and let the tears drop down onto the Olympic ice.

“Words can not describe,” Rochette said through a spokesperson.

Joannie Rochette of Canada reacts after competing in the figure skating short program.

Not 48 hours after she lost her mother, Therese, to a heart attack, Rochette refused to let grief derail their shared dream of skating here. With her father, Normand, overcome with emotion as he watched from the stands, Rochette sailed through a courageous program, cleanly landing all of her jumps and leaving the skating world in awe of her strength.

“Right now I think her mother is jumping up and down in the sky,” William Thompson of Skate Canada said. “That was the dream performance.”

Rochette, who few thought would even take the ice, didn’t just compete, she delivered. She didn’t just attempt, she soared. She didn’t just inspire with her determination, she thrilled with her grace, poise and ability.

She isn’t just in the competition. She’s sitting in third place heading into Thursday’s long program with a personal season-best 71.36. In storybook fashion, she trails just Korea’s Kim Yu-Na and Japan’s Mao Asada.

“She is here to try to win a medal, if not win the whole thing,” Michael Slipchuk of Skate Canada said.

Win the whole thing?

Oh, my.

Rochette simply taking the ice was cause for roaring cheers and cheeks stained with tears. This was the resilience of the human heart, a daughter trying to honor the sacrifices of her mother by fulfilling their goal of Olympic competition.

They’re small-town people, from a 500-person hamlet in Quebec. Normand was a hockey coach who put little Joannie on blades young and then worked two and three jobs to finance her dream of being an Olympic champion. Mother and daughter used to load up the car and drive through snowstorms and Canadian prairies, one tournament after the next, stitching costumes from the front seat in a shared journey that delivered six Canadian championships, a fifth-place finish at the Turin Olympics and was supposed to culminate here at their home-nation Games.

Rochette had become a contender in the last 18 months, better than ever, and they wanted gold, wanted to surprise everyone, wanted to make “O Canada” ring through the Vancouver night.

Joannie had arrived two weeks ago to take in the Opening Ceremony and finish her training here. Therese and Normand traveled Saturday, visited with their daughter and then retired to an apartment they had rented downtown. That’s when Normand found his wife unresponsive and rushed her to a hospital where she was pronounced dead at age 55.

He then made a lonely, early Sunday morning trip to the Olympic Village to break the news to his only child. Within hours she reaffirmed a single goal. She was going to skate. She was going to show the world the champion Therese had raised.

And show she did.

With the arena holding its breath, her face cracked with emotion as she took the center of the ice to begin. Then just as quickly it went back to full concentration.

When the first bars of La Cumparsita tango began you couldn’t tell anything was wrong. She was a rock. She was a pro. By the time she landed a triple-Lutz, double-toe-loop combo, the sold-out arena was going wild. They clapped to the music. They cheered every spin, rejoiced in every twirl and took in a simply magical effort.

At the end they roared like a hockey crowd. The often demur elites that watch international figure skating were screaming into the air. The melting pot of nationalities gave up their own rooting interests and applauded like she was their own daughter.

Rochette just stood and wept as the cheers tumbled down onto the ice.

“Hard to handle,” she said of the crowd. “But appreciate the support. I will remember this forever … I have no regrets.”

Her brilliance had been too much to ask. To take the ice was going to be enough. To stay upright throughout would’ve been legendary.

To wind up third? To hit the program better than she had all year? To face down what is immense pressure in the best times and deliver perfection in the worst?

“She put a performance that was so heroic,” said Skate Canada’s Thompson, himself crying at the end for the first time ever at a skating competition. “It’s an incredible story.”

In the locker room Rochette was still in tears, according to Slipchuk, still coming to terms with everything. As brilliant as the skate was, it didn’t change the reality of her life. Her mother isn’t coming back. The mourning process still must come.

“It’s been a long 48 hours for her and a lot built up,” Slipchuk said. “I think it was a release today.”

Rochette will take Wednesday off, stay off the ice and regroup, the officials said. Thursday presents an even bigger challenge, an even longer skate, and even more pressure awaits.

It should be too much, but now how do you not believe? She’s in position for a medal. She’s not conceding gold. Joannie Rochette just taught these Games about courage, just rocked this arena with her strength and just laid bare the power of the human will.

And she’s not done. She’s not even close.

That made me cry. That's what i love about the Olympics - in the midst of the hype, money etc.....there are those moments when you are reminded that these althletes, mostly young, are following a dream. I was nervous for her, wanted her to skate for her mom....she did and it was a great, genuine moment.
That folks, is real reality TV.
And Kim Yu-na, breathtaking......only Sasha Cohen can close in elegance and artistry, two things very rare in figure skating.

Big night for the Canadians. Huge win versus soft Russia in hockey as the russkies wanted no part of the corners and allowed Canada to free wheel round their net. Then gold and silver in womens bobsled with NBC showing a great picture of my son running down the track at the end waving a huge Canadian flag. IF someone can find that pic please post it for me? I have only found one pic of him last night when he was checking on the poor Germany gal whose sled had flipped. here is that pic Terry is in the red jacket.

We watched the Ohno race about 5 times in super slow mo on my tv. I couldnt see that he pushed in anyway. Bad call imho. Canada/USA should be a great way to finish these games.

gimmekeef, your son has a mohawk, right?

If that's him, he got some NBC face time yesterday tending to the Russian bobsledders that crashed.
Thankfully they were uninjured...

Yup thats him lefty! He's had quite a few shots this week on NBC and even the NY Times ran an AP story about him. We are very proud and I am collecting all the video clips from tv. Here he is in a pic I just found online.

Thrilling end to a great tournament.
No doubt it turned many people on to what a great game hockey can be.

Hope Gary Bettman and the NHL owners took note of how this showcased the talent in their league, and don't blow it by not allowing those players to compete in 2014.

And while they're comparing notes, maybe they'll even realize it's time to get rid of fighting...

Storybook finish to the Olympics. But that just makes it 1 game each. How about they delay the NHL season 1 more week and have a rubber match. At MSG. Dare to dream.....But when the NHL does start again on tuesday. Gonna be an interesting game in San Jose between the Sharks and the New Jersey Devils. 2 of the best goalies in the game in Brodeur and Nabokov. Both had terrible Olympics.

Yes, I think he sounded great! Didn't know how he would fit in with the musical tribute, but it worked perfectly. Smiley

Would have been even better had the silly fucking cow commentating for the BBC not jabbered all the way through the intro and then for the last minute of the song.

We didn't have to suffer through that too badly. But we were subjected to endless pics of atheletes mugging for the camera.....Just show Neil. Old shakey looked great in his simplicity. Nice version of Long May You Run.

Worked for me. Looked on there earlier and didn't see it. Thanks Lefty. Again, the simplicity of it just rocks. No screaming, yelling, bells or whistles. Let me just sing a song....And yes %100 live. You could tell when his voice cracked on "chrome heart" twice. Still far from Daltreyesque though. Wink

Usually announcers offer nothing during these ceremonies. Costas did have one hilarious line though..."And here comes the always popular inflatable beavers" Closing ceremonies were kinda hokey in a typical Canuck way. They would have been panned as horrid but after the hockey game no one there cared! Nice to see the games play out with competitive events and no doping issues either. Is that a first?
