Whew..been a rough few hours since the luge accident. My son is still somewhat in shock as I spoke to him this morning. He didnt sleep much and called me at 6 am west coast time. He was heading back to the luge track to man his post. Hopefully to work the rest of the games in obscurity.

Yeah that's a tough way to get started. But they are going ahead with the Luge competition. They're going to build up the wall a little bit that's all. Hope your son does'nt face anymore situations like that. But from what I heard they were on the scene within a minute. So their wasn't much anybody could do.

i thought last nights ceremonies were to long.  1 hour of pregame information into 4 hours of ceremonies.  i like the joni mitchael clouds piece.  the images were really well done last night.  i think i heard they spent 20 million on it.  another thing i think is rather a waste is having to burn 4 torches...i think it is a waste of oil or whatever it is they burn in those things.  1 flame is enough for me.

i saw the footage of that luge guy who died.  what a way to go.  90 mph hitting a structural I beam...must have cracked himself into 20 pieces.  sick.

Are you fucking serious?

I agree with SCL's comments.  I hope they pad the poles beside the track HEAVILY.  How could this obvious danger not have been noticed?  A very sad ending to a young man who worked so hard just to reach the Olympics.  You can be proud of your son, gimmekeef.  He's a caring, brave young man and I hope with time this event will only make him stronger.

i think a heavily padded pole ain't going to do shit if you hit it at 90+mph.  a better way would be to install netting of some type.  especially since this seems to be a dangerous curve.  i understand the luge event is scheduled for this evening

A net makes a lot of sense.  Good thinking.  I'll bet it won't happen though.

Reports are that the wall in Curve 16 of the luge track will be raised, and the "ice profile" changed.

Today's event will take place as scheduled.

The REALLY puzzling, and sad thing, is that there have been tons of crashes on this luge run for ages now. And many {one guy was knocked unconscious} just in the last few days of practice. And yet they say the track was not responsible for the man's death...?

I do hope, so very much, that the rest of the games go on without incident. I can't imagine what a horrific experience that was for your son, gimmekeef. Sad But the others are right---the aid was swift, the actions taken were accurate...there was just nothing that could have been done to save him. I also can't imagine how hard it is for your son to take up position again, and have this terrible tragedy in the back of his mind...{or the front}. Sad

OK they have made some adjustmenst to the luge. the area where the fellow went off the track has been walled in. I also believe the men are now leaving from the lower womens area and speeds have dropped back to mid 80's where they traditionally have been. Hopefully remedies that will work and provide better safety.

I heard that as well. One luger said it was kinda "boring" now, but agrees that safety must come first. Hope all goes well from here on out.

I'm sorry for the poor athlete and his team and family, I don't suppose a flimsy helmet and no other bodily protection but aerodynamic lycra is going to offer much protection at 90mph...Also sorry for your poor son, gimmekeef, what a traumatic tragedy to have to go through, poor kid!....

Does anyone have another link to the snowboarding? The video has been removed from Youtube and I LOVE snowboarding but we don't have SKY or any other sports subscriptions on our telly... Smiley

Yeah I thought I was going to be in luck with an Olympics actually in my time zone. But NBC (nothing but commercials) has decided that in the instant information age,it really isn't important to show events live. That was clever

I have nothing better to do,so I'm going to whine some more. Mens downhill is happening right now. It's a holiday here in the States. Why not show show the fucking thing live Fuck you Gazza, Will ya?

I can stop whining now. I found a live stream. Granted it's not in english. Undecided
