The Mel Belli guitar video series is back!

It's winter, dreary, nothing going on in Stonesland. So I thought I'd share a little music -- a breakdown of my favorite Mick Taylor moments from "Brussels '73." Sorry if I yakked too much:

Pt. 1 -- "Tumbling Dice"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpLTvrDiMFY

Pt. 2 -- "Angie"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgP70vjtLqo

Pt. 3 -- "You Can't Always Get What You Want," "Honky Tonk Women," "Midnight Rambler"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QovKTYkKfUY

i like these instuctional types of videos.  i was never musically inclined.  i did know 1 or 2 songs on the guitar back in the seventies but everytime i went to sing people would leave the room.

Shit!

Nice guitar!   I'm workin on the Angie solo now - I had an idea of the notes from listening by ear, but this will definitely help.  I  LOVE the Brussels solo, but you should check out some '82 boots.  One of Ronnie's best live moments.  Similar notes, but obviously not as sweet of a tone/fluidity.  Bit more of a crunchier sound.

You do a pretty good MT, would love to hear you do "Winter."  (You in a band?)

Well, thanks! Quite a surprise to see that as the header this morning. Kind of embarrassing, too. I am in a band—with 2 kids, it's *very* part-time—in the D.C. area, and I rip off MT as often as I can Smiley

Winter. All right. I'll make that the next installment.

Haha, it's cool, nothing to be ashamed of.  I'm from not too far away, in AA County, though my "band" has never played a gig bigger than a birthday party.  Looking forward to "Winter."

That's a beauty.

The 339 would've been a reach for my budget, but I had a Marshall JCM-800 head and cab sitting in my garage for years. If I'm playing out, I usually bring a Fender DeVille or, for small rooms, a little Vox Cambridge. ... So I had some fairly valuable hardware that I wasn't using. I traded it in and—voila—brought home the Gibson.

Well done!  Love hearing these Stones guitar licks recreated.  I always had an emotional attachment to that tune, for some reason, and the solo and outro were big reasons why.

Thanks Throwaway.

It's pretty cold in my basement these days. I was having trouble trying to stay in time, and this version is certainly slower than the Ya-Yas version. I used a digital camera with a movie mode, so the quality is rough . . .

I know what it's like to play with cold hands, and your execution is damn-near flawless. Very impressive!

And let me add, this is *exactly* what I hoped would happen when I posted by clips. It's all about sharing the music. Who needs to pay for tablature?!

Nice of you to say, Mel. I was beginning to think I spoiled the thread.
I was hoping others would start uploading their interpretations too. Love to watch 'em.

My IYRWTBMF solo attempt may contain all of the original elements, just not together in one piece.
And SFTD is getting closer, but still needs work. Both are played a bit slow, I think.

I was planning on putting up my interpretation of the (live) Angie solo (the MT part, not the KR part at the Am section).
And maybe the Keith riffs of Rambler? Pretty fun, IMO.

PS I don't have the ability/patience to read tabs. If I can't figure it out or be shown, I move on to another . . .

I sneaked away to Fla. for a few days (not warm enough!), so I haven't been around these parts lately. ... I'd love to see your take on "Angie." If I can get the kids to take a nap, I'll take a run at "Winter."

... I do look at tablature quite a bit -- and it probably atrophies my ear.

Although it could have been, it really wasn't just about the leads.

Very interesting.  Never really noticed how much MT made use of all 6 strings on his solos.  He really made the most of his basic scales, with his amazing tone, vibrato, bends, etc.  Nonetheless, Mel, you do a pretty sick job capturing that "mean" tone of his (on which he makes his major scales almost sound bluesy, or his bluesy scales sound real aggressive, like on Stray Cat off Ya Ya's).

Yeah, his slide playing is pretty good.  Interestingly enough, he does a great Sympathy and Angie - not Brussels, but Newcastle.  Cool to see there are more Stones-obsessed out there!

Here's my shot at Rambler. Just the components, not the whole song.
2 beers and 2 shots. Saw the guitar and couldn't resist picking it up.

I couldn't figure out what BBJ was. I refused to look at a setlist.
Just figured it out. I never go that far down a setlist when I listen, unless I'm working.

Nice call. The MSG '72 SBD has a stunning version. I can get the notes, but nobody can get that energy.
That's one of a kind.

Where'd you get that Mick Taylor tee?  I'm diggin it, bro!   Grin

I'll add my input (sorry, my webcam isn't working) to this thread, and talk about Ventilator Blues - I like to tune the A string to a G (1 step down), and the first note of the riff becomes an open string, making the riff a little easier, and it sounds better, too.  Then, for the chorus, you play easy, 1 finger across, chords, on the 4 'middle' strings (for the Gm of the chorus, play is 3-3-5-5-x-x).  Play the x-x-3-3-x-x part of the main riff with a slide, for some added swagger.  Nothing major, just a little tip for some added playability for the riff, while still allowing the room to play some leads.

I got the shirt in Santa Cruz, Palookaville 2001. I was amazed to see them for sale.

Know what you mean about keeping standard tuning for lead options. Good tip, just tuning down the A.

All great stuff.  Many thanks to all for the videos and the info.

That's one of a kind.

Notes are a nice start.

That "energy" seems to require a particular band and who knows what else?

Kind of odd how he went from Little Queenie and Carol standard boogie stuff (with subtle rhythmic embellishments) to the wild soulfulness and manic Otis Rushisms of BBJ--then back to the more subtle stuff of Star Star.

Love it, love it. The way I was playing it made it harder. You found the second A-minor groove there in the 12-14 box. I was moving over to the ninth and/or fifth position too early...

Who wants to take on the Brussels "Heartbreaker" solos? Sounds like there's a diminished or whole-town scale idea lurking in one of those measures. I could be wrong, though...

If you're so inclined Fuman, I think we would all enjoy hearing your "Don't Lie To Me" (did they play it in Ft. Worth '72?  or was it Philly?) solo - similar to MT's BBJ solo, but with an even meaner, more aggressive tone.

Very nice!

Now for something a little off the beaten path: MT's solo on John Phillips' "Oh Virginia," which, for obvious reasons related to drugs and incest, will never become the anthem of my adopted home state!

Similar elements to "Winter" solo, with some country bending.

Love it, your playing is quite fluid.  Imagine if they just made that one a little longer in '72 (it barely hit 2 mins!), giving Keith the 1st solo then MT a 2nd; it could have been the "Little Queenie" of '72-3.

Oooo, livin' back home.  Nice work!  I'm not much of a technical player, but you really got the sound down on this one, a major scale with beautiful "country" bends as you call them.  I liken this one to MT's "Tumbling Dice" solos in 72/3.

Ah, great choice. Nice job. That's another MT solo for the ages . . .

That album is a tough listen for me, for the reasons you mentioned.
The latest release (Pussycat) has 1 outtake with MT on it (Hello Mary Lou).

Thanks Throwaway. Your idea of splitting the solos is interesting.

They both had solos on Angie live in 1973.
Keith takes the little solo when Jagger is singing:

Angie, I still Love ya baby
Every where I look I see your eyes
There ain't a woman that comes close to you
C'mon baby dry your eyes.

Taylor plays some stunningly beautiful chords underneath Keith's staccato soloing.
What a treasure, having Taylor in the Stones for that short time.

Well, there must be some lurkers, cause this threads got a lot of views!

To add some rhythmic playing tips to this thread:

On Get Yer Ya Ya's, you hear this bit somewhat, but it's more obvious on Love You Live - the rhythm guitar on Sympathy has a neat change.  We have the standard shapes of the E, D, A.  Then, on Ya Ya's, there's Keiths 5 strings, 3 fingers rhythm, to do the E as 4-5-4-6-4-x, the D as the same shape but a full step lower, then the A as the 2nd fret all the way across.  A little trick I've recently learned is to do the E as x-9-9-9-9/11-x  to  x-9-9-9-x-x (standard tuning, I believe Woody plays this on LYL), the D as the same but a step lower, then the same little lick at the 2nd fret for the A.  It's a fun little lick to play as the 2nd rhythm with some lead (major scale) licks thrown in during the verses.

OK-so I'm going to violate the thread norm by adding someone else's stuff.  This guy seems to come the closest to the DF studio solo.  (I prefer Leeds, but that's for another day.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjLP_xI20Fg&feature=related

By the way, from time to time, there is a debate about whether the studio version has Taylor or Richards on lead.  I've no doubt that it's Taylor.

Pretty close indeed, although there is no reason to miss the few notes that he does miss, unless he hears them differently I guess.

Dead Flowers is definitely MT - why else would Keith play rhythm on the track for both MT and RW eras?

From what I know, here are Keith's leads (studio) from SF - IORR (Let It Bleed was really all Keith)

Tumbling Dice
Happy
Star Star

I admit that the last portion does sound like something MT would play, but all of the Chuck Berry sounding stuff that precedes it sounds like Keith to me. It's has a Honky Tonk Woman effect to my ears. I do hear an overdub come in near the end. Maybe you're right. Maybe MT gets the final notes? He certainly doesn't start the solo, IMO.

Could be both of them—with MT's part turned up in the mix at the very end. I just listened to it, and I'm not sure anymore.

Ok, after listening closely I am almost positive I hear MT's guitar fade in right on top of Keith's, as Keith starts to fade, and those final notes are in fact Taylor. Wow. After all these years of only hearing Keith.

Have you guys heard Taylor's little bluesy run in Loving Cup?
Right around the 2:53 - 2:55 mark, and pretty low in the mix.
Jagger sings "and my shirt's all torn", then stops and you can hear the lick start.
Just noticed it for the first time about a year ago . . .

It sounds Keith to me - there are quite a few guitars on Loving Cup, though, so it's really hard to distinguish them (at least one with capo 5).

Wild Horses
Bitch
Tumbling Dice
Happy
Star Star
Aint Too Proud to Beg
It's Only Rock and Roll
Till the Next Goodbye (slide)

Are Coming Down Again and Shake Your Hips not "leads"?

By the way, Fendert posted some Taylor solos on micktaylor.net some time ago.

"Time Waits For No One" is imminent. A couple parts of that thing are a bitch -- despite MT never departing from the seven notes of the A Aeolian mode!

Quick clarification: I went back for a listen, and he's not playing A Aeolian. The song modulates to the key of C ... so he's just doing the C-major scale.

This thread almost got relegated to page two. Uh oh.

Ok, here's my attempt at Dance Little Sister.
It's pretty rough, don't expect much. I had to ease up on the Bigsby because I kept going out of tune.

What an unusual guitar MT plays here. Sounds like a Tele to me. Lot's of whammy bar vibrato's. Lot's of 'em . . .
And that 'hammer on - pull off' run throughout. Very unusual. Never heard that from MT before OR after this song.
Certainly the most unusual MT solo from his years in The Rolling Stones. The distortion on his guitar is also bizarre.
Sounds like there is a connection loose at times. Very coughy sounding.

This was the first album with produced by the Glimmer Twins, right?
Pretty mediocre mixing on this track, IMO. I can imagine them with their hands on the mixing levers, ready to fade out and then back in. And at some point they turn up Taylor's guitar so that it drowns out the rhythm of the song. I also noticed that a couple of Taylor's parts are overdubbed. I can still hear one note ringing as a new note starts. Poor mixing I think.

I only get about 3 minutes of video recording, so after a few attempts that cut off before I got near the end of the song, I decided to truncate the redundant sections. I wanted to get as many of the solo notes in as possible. I missed a few, oh well . . .

That was sweet. The tone — appropriately nasty! I've noticed a lot of patience in your playing ... you hold bends and drop in the next phrase at exactly the right beat or accent. Me, I end up slurring lines because I'm too lazy to do it note for note.

Also: is it me, or was MT doing a bit of Joe Walsh/James Gang with that lead?

Hey: how about MT's "I Could Have Stood You Up" solo? Chuck Berry-ish, but never as simple as it seems.

Thanks Mel. I have been trying to linger on certain notes, but my ears tell me I'm failing.
Interesting that you would comment on it. I guess I get it some times . . .

I had to listen to Dance Little Sister 30 times before I could remember the sequence of the different solos.
And I don't favor the Telecaster but wanted to get the twang, so I persisted.

Now, if I could get a rehearsal with this band:

Great, great job.  You say you don't care for the Tele, but it sounds awesome!  Taylor was so talented, sometimes I wish he played more often with a crunchier tone.

Anybody heard "Going Through the Door" from Taylor and Alvin Lee's tour?  He adds a nice slide solo, not quite on par with Love In Vain, but soulful nonetheless: https://www.yousendit.com/download/THE2NU1DSWVBNkVLSkE9PQ

And I loved his work on Talk Is Cheap, but I wish he had a longer solo on CHSYU (he shoulda had the second solo, but then again, it was KEITH's record).

Agreed, Taylor was so far beyond his peers. His ability to implant a second melody is second to none.

I really like the MT solo on Alvin Lee's "Can't Stop" in 1981. Very kind of Alvin to give that solo to Mick.

And for Talk Is Cheap, I would have liked to hear Taylor's take on "Locked Away", although Keith does a fine job himself . . .

By the way, I thought of another Taylor whammy bar vibrato solo.
Dylan's 1984 tour, the Greg Sutton version of Imagination (Got To Use My).
If you get a chance, check out the Hamburg version. Stunning !!

Seems to me he was in the same boat as Jeff Beck: couldn't pull off the Clapton two-step of singing and fronting a band as well as being a "virtuoso." MT's first solo album tried for the Beck-ian, muffled-snare fusion sound of the '70s, but I think it arrived far too late to be successful on those terms. Add to that the drug problems. Like Beck, too, MT wasn't heard from, recording-wise, for long stretches. But his chops are nowhere in the same shape as Beck's are today ... That guy seems to have reached a second peak.

I think it's probably in E flat due to Johnny Johnson's piano.

Good point. Hadn't considered that. Chuck often played in sharps and flats, didn't he?

Yes, almost all . . .
I believe I heard Keith say most of Chuck's songs were actually Johnny Johnson's piano riffs (Hail Hail Rock and Roll?).

Keith's boosting of Johnnie's reputation — and his apparent encouragement of that lawsuit against Chuck — has not sat well with Chuck, I don't think Smiley

thanks for theses vids ...most enjoyable....
two quick idea...
I hear some similarity in MT's playing and that of Danny Kirwan from Fleetwood mac....especially when MT uses his faster vibrato..both have an innocent quality to my ears..
then, I would point out with no disrespect to Johnny Johnson that Lafayette Leak, n Otis Spann play on many of those records.....
again BIG THANKS for the vids.

Happy to do it — as well as watch others doing same ... I'm thinking about introducing some piano vids. It's not my strong suit, but I can fairly well get through some Nicky Hopkins riffs, like the "Loving Cup" intro and bits of "Let It Loose."

Any ideas, guitar or otherwise?

I know many ROers don't share the love for Short and Curlies, but if you're doing a piano session, you gotta include that one!  Always thought this tune shoulda been played ilve, if for nothing else it would only consume < 3 minutes of concert time!

I been away over the weekend, but looks like you did well on CHSYU - an interesting era for Taylor, but he definitely seemed to try to play like KEITH on that one (check out Keith's Black Limo solo from Stripped, going from major to minor blues scales).

Problem is, I don't have a tripod. I just recorded the right hand of the "Loving Cup" intro (the right hand, at least) with my Droid phone, but I can't get doubleTwist to talk to YouTube. I looked into converting the video file and downloaded Handbreak, but I can't seem to get that software to find any of my media files!

Fortunately for all here, I do not have the ability to film myself misplaying this stuff...I think the first MT solo I got straight was Hide your love and then I dug through ya yas because...well because I needed to know how all that stuff was played...Ya yas along with the Muddy Waters blue sky lps were what drove me to play guitar.....How do they do that kinda thing.

Of course, whatever you add would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, who do you think is playing the main rhythm on Star Star?  One channel has a prominent boogie rhythm, the other has a secondary version of this rhythm and the multi-stop "lead" that starts in the other channel and pans to this channel.  (The lead break is mono as far as I recall and is not what I'm referring to.)

Pretty sure it's MJ on rhythm, Keith lead, and MT on bass.

I vote for MT rhythm, KR lead.

It's a very smooth & playful rhythm, I doubt Jagger has that ability on guitar.

Yeah, just listened to it: it's MT.

I don't know why I thought otherwise. Maybe it's because I've always assumed MJ wrote the song and, as with latter-day Stones, when that's the case, he usually plays rhythm. Back then, not so much.

Okay, keeping the Mick Taylor Appreciation Society alive!

Here's a perhaps not-so-well-known solo—"Never Fall in Love Again":

You need to spend more time in here, Fuman, rather than the Obama thread. I just took a peek in there—it's a damn hornet's nest! Trust me; I live "inside the Beltway" ... stuff is bad for your health, no pun intended Smiley

Thanks Mel, that's good advice. The politics in America has taken years off of my life, I'm sure.
But I can't just let it go. I would rather age prematurely than let it go down the toilet without a peep from me.
Anyway, I appreciate your comment, and that you posted it in here away from that noise . . .

A close friend of mine in San Francisco gets pretty frustrated with my new (4 year's now?) highly political personality. He shuts me down when I start to go there, which is fine. He's heard all of my ranting. "What's new in Rolling Stones news" is his method.
Speaking of Grady (that's my SF friend), I was telling him about your Stones riff thread and more specifically, the song choices that you have made. He was very impressed (and I am too). I mean, "Oh Virginia"? That is a fantastic choice for a Taylor solo. Very obscure too. And Could Have Stood You Up is as well. Then you select Never Fall In Love! I told him about this new thread a while ago, when you had just put up Angie. He mentioned If You Really Want To Be My Friend as a similar soaring solo, so that's where I got the idea to post that one.

He has been taping Mick Taylor shows in the San Francisco area since 1984, when he bought his first portable deck. Had a nice collection when I met him in 2001. Lot's of tape trading I guess. He isn't online yet !!

Ok, time for dinner . . .

I'm just glad I'm not the only MT obsessive around here. It's possible there are ... dozens of us! Smiley

This thread has been great practice, if nothing else. When I put up the first video, I was sort of like, "Here's how it goes, you can figure out the details." Then you put up "Sympathy" and "Angie." I said, "Oh, crap! He actually knows them note for note!"

That got me motivated to hit the woodshed, so to speak.

I feel ashamed - I didn't even recognize "Never Fall In Love Again"!  I'll have to go back and listen to Stones Throw..it's been a while.  I don't know much about his time in JM's Bluesbreakers...did he have any ripping solos on their albums?

That's awesome Mel!  Didn't know you played.   It sounded sweet!  I bet you enjoy playing Love In Vain on that bad boy.

If you're into the NM Allstars, Squirrel Nut Zippers, or Alvin YB Hart, you should check out the South Memphis String Band - they'll be in Alexandria in a few weeks (I'm seeing them in Philly) - and they play only acoustic instruments, with a mandolin on just about every song (Luther and Alvin both play).

My pleasure.  Their album is on iTunes.

I've been working on the slide, but I kinda suck at it.  I know it ain't MT, but have you tried playing Ry's part on "Sister Morphine?"  I know it lasts the whole song, but he's got a few signature licks on there that he repeats.  Anyone know if he's in standard?  I really am a slide noob...I usually stick to the G and occasionally B strings.

I just snooped around Google ... consensus out there seems to be that Cooder used open-D for "Sister." I've actually never tried it before. I'll check it out soon! In the meantime, those who Know—feel free to enlighten us.

Mel

Thanks for all the work you've uploaded to YouTube! It's great to see someone with a better ear play those tunes. With respect to your Winter video...can you show me (us) the first two chords you are using for the rhythm part...i find it hard to see from the video.

Thanks

Sure thing! Mick Jagger's part seems to start with (low to high) this D chord: x-0-4-2-3-0 or maybe x-x-0-2-5-0 and then to an A — x-0-2-2-2-0. My ears tell me that MT, whose rhythm fill is at the other end of the neck, is around the seventh and ninth frets and the third, fourth, and fifth strings. Hope that's helpful!

Cool video, always been a fan of "Slow Blues" (and "Blues in the Morning").  I don't know too much about scales, but I'll definitely play around with this one on some blues, it seems like a signature MT scale.

Any tips on amp settings to get the MT sound?  (bass, mid, treble, drive)  His solo-record sounds were a mix between twang/blues.

I never had any idea what that line was! Had to do a double-take. Really sweet playing there ... Just when you think MT was finished with a phrase, he was already in the middle of the next one. He's like a chess player, always thinking a couple moves ahead...

I noticed on the header video of Mick Taylor, that he's not using a pick, just his fingers, Jeff Beck is another one that does this, not a lot of Rock guitarist's use their fingers.

Goes so far as to use thumb and finger picks here:

I could never really get into those. They're too long and get in the way. Plus, you get better tone with actual skin.

I've got a January '09 issue of Guitar Techniques magazine. A little featurette on MT has suggested amp settings of Gain at 5; Bass, 6; Middle, 6; Treble, 5; and Reverb, 2.

Along with this note:
"Mick's best known as a Les Paul man, although he's used SGs, Teles and Strats and still sounds like himself, so basically use whatever you have. The trick is to go easy on the gain and learn to use the guitar's controls; it's retro-style power valve overdrive we're after rather than pre-amp distortion. A good quality medium-sized valve combo with a fairly neutral EQ setting, turned up loud with either a low-gain overdrive channel selected or one of the more blues-style overdrives out there in front, again still hovering around the lower gain settings, should get you in the right ballpark."

Seems pretty reasonable to me...

I have a Peavey Classic 30, which I always set clean. Just a little volume.

A friend recommended the Ibanez Tube King, which doesn't really break up too much for distortion, but provides EQ via 3 tone gain knobs.  On these 3 knobs I use 5 for bass, 7 for mid, and 5 for treble. I do use the reverb in the Classic 30 but that's all.

...

The YouTube sound is completely different than the sound in the room. Probably cheap mics of my old digital camera?
I'm limited to 3 minutes, so it's always a challenge to choreograph the parts. I'm already bothered by what I left out. Damn.

Mel's Factory Girl was fun, eh? I never bought a mandolin, but I wanted one and was very close on numerous occasions.

Good stuff.  Always like messing around with different sounds; MT seemed to prefer a cleaner tone, and you could always tell it was him.  Check out CHYMK and tell me he wasn't a huge influence on Slash's tone!  Personally, I prefer his slightly cleaner tone on songs like "Shine a Light" and "Hide Your Love."

Saw the IORR video - anybody know what guitar Mick is playing (at :47 you can get a decent look at it) - looks different than anything I've seen him ever play.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhHODhTIvgo

He probably didn't have to worry about soap bubbles getting into the works though . . .

Isn't that what Cobain played? And Cobain made the top 10 of Rolling Stone magazines most influential guitarists, right?
Sadly, Mick Taylor wasn't mentioned in their top 100. What's up with that . . .

This somewhat respected site has MT as #61 - good to see him get some props http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/best_newguitar.html

Most people today don't know who MT is - classic rock stations only play a few Stones songs, and even those don't showcase MT's skills (only recently have I heard CYHMK on the FM radio).  It's nice to see some Stones enthusiasts talk about Taylor; I can remember a Slash interview talking about his vibrato.

This list looks a lot more reasonable than the Rolling Stone Magazine list.

I don't agree with the Clapton rating being so high in the list, with originality, influence, creativity, and skill (technique, versatility) being the criteria. Clapton is probably the best at what he does, but it never fails to put me to sleep (as far as the melodies he plays). Zero originality played with superb excellence. Love his Beatles work though . . .

Hendrix deserves #1 for sure.
Beck deserves to be #2 IMO, and I don't even like his music very much. He IS a very rare talent.
As far as the rest of the list goes I would just say that I think Taylor deserves a top 10 spot.

Definitely true, but sadly the mainstream will never get a true glimpse on the work of MT - the biggest Stones "hit" featuring his true talents is probably "Dead Flowers" or perhaps "Heartbreaker." With only one live album during his tenure, Ya Ya's is far too short to showcase his playing, outside of "Stray Cat" perhaps.  Then, as a soloist, his stuff never really caught on, and he only played temporarily with other big names (Dylan, Alvin Lee, etc).  Just another reason to release the vaults.  On that list, when he was in the zone, I feel that no guitarist could touch him...but we ARE on a Stones board  Wink

Here's a cool E Dorian lick that MT used on "Slow Blues":

Yeah, thanks for the lesson Mel - it's got my ear noticing a similar scale in some of Taylor's playing, notably Ya Ya's Sympathy (towards the end, before his triplet flourishes), and Street Fighting Man (probably just a blend of major/minor pentatonic).  Either way, they make his playing really unique.  Nothing like a little Brussels Affair on a unseasonably hot Maryland afternoon..

To be honest, I'm not even sure MT thought in terms of theory like that. I think he went for target notes based on the composition of each chord—which, let's face it, is a pretty easy thing to do with Stones music—and then trusted his ears the rest of the way.

But, like I said, every once in a while, he'd throw in something cool like the "Slow Blues" lick; he repeated it enough times on the track to suggest he knew it was a "value-add" kind of phrase. And he clearly knew his way around basic major scales.

I'm certainly not much of a theory buff, myself. But there's a popular series of instructional books by Jody Fisher that help me a ton, especially with the modes. There's a section in Fisher's "Beginning Jazz Guitar" that clicked for me; it was like a skeleton key. Rather than learning new shapes or fingerings for each mode, it teaches you to locate the modes "derivatively"—because they're major scales, only with fancy Greek names.

If I want to find Dorian, I mentally move a whole step down from whatever chord I'm playing. Dorian is mostly used with minor-7 chords, so let's say you're playing a Dm7. Move (not literally, but mentally) two frets toward the neck, and there's C.

Bingo: Play the C-major scale from D to D (D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D) and you're playing in the Dorian mode! Not only in Dorian, but *D* Dorian. That was one of the things that confused me initially about modes. I understood that you constructed them out of major scales—but what to do with them? I was ignoring the fact that there was A Dorian, B Dorian, C Dorian, etc., and you play them with those corresponding chords.

Similarly, if you move four frets, or two steps, from D, you locate Bb. Hence, play the Bb major scale over the Dm7, and you're in D Phrygian.

I've got guitar-centric little mnemonic devices for each mode. A common one is Mixolydian, played most frequently over dominant seventh chords like E7 or A7, etc. How to find Mixolydian? Think of the 4 of whatever chord you're playing. Let's say E7. What's the 4 of E? Answer: A.

Voila: Play the A major scale from E to E, and you're in E Mixolydian!

To forestall confusion, you might know that Mixolydian is built out of the fifth note of the major scale. My little trick reverses things. Technically, when talking about modes, we should say that E is the five of A. But, at least for me, it's easier to think of the chord I'm playing as the root, and then move from there.

Aeolian is really easy. Just think in terms of relative major/minor. Go back to our Dm7 chord above. What major is Dm relative to? F. So if you play the F major scale over Dm7, you're in D Aeolian.

Okay. Enough pontificating from me!

Love his Beatles work though . . .

You know, it might be blasphemy, but I feel the same way about Stevie Ray Vaughn: He did Albert King and Hendrix superbly well...

Thanks for putting this stuff in more laymen's terms - I been reading up on some theory/scales lately, but I always find it easier to play a scale relative to some other root, note, scale, etc.  As you say, 'derivatively.'  This stuff not only helps with lead playing, but also writing - maybe a song in the key of F major should have a bridge in D Aeolian.

got a question about good time women, mt plays a tiny lick at 1:15, can't tell if that's w/slide, pick harmonics or what?
i'm a tele guy, so it could be just gibson overtones i'm missing

Welcome, Jeff, to the guitarheads' corner of the board!

I checked out "Good Time Women" ... I don't hear anything at 1:15. There's a cool lick at around 1:45, the last bit of MT's lead. Could that be it? Far as I can tell, no slide—just a trill that he gets from laying into the note with his wrist.

I hear what you both are saying.  It's the end of the (very short) guitar solo - metal guitarists would go on to use the trick lots in the 80s, playing a single note but shaking the wrist violently, as Mel says.  I could see how it does sound a bit like a slide, when slide players vibrato a single note.

Oooh, interesting. I would pick something else if I were to attempt MT/Dylan era songs.
This guy gets the notes, but I think MT is on different strings for some of it. Maybe not . . .

My favorite solo from the '84 tour is It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.
That and Every Grain Of Sand. Paris is a fantastic recording and has both of these songs !!

Hamburg is a really good performance and great audience quality recording.
Barcelona is another, and Paris too.

Oh, and Gothenburg and Copenhagen as well.
There is a complete monitor recording of the 19th of June Rome show.
Two other Rome (20th and 21st?) audiences exist, both bad recordings.

Better get 'em all . . . There's only 27 dates.

Thanks for the info Fu.  Downloading Newcastle '84 as we speak.

Switching subjects a little, and I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it, but I dig the tune "Winning Ugly" - just can't get that lick down!  Anybody tried to play Keith's opening riff?

"Winning Ugly": Keith said it's just the "Tumbling Dice" lick, only longer. I've never tried it.

I've been kicking around "Plundered My Soul," natch. Open-G with capo on second fret, I think? A couple of graceful chords in there that rarely if ever turn up in Stones songs, at least not in the same way. The one over which Mick sings "I thought you needed my lovin'" sounds like a B7. The bottom note of it in the open-G tuning, fifth string, is an Eb, which I don't recall Keith ever having done before or since. Pretty cool...

Or maybe it's just in standard, and I'm all wet.

Interesting!  Winning Ugly is in C, just a half step above Tumbling Dice.  The riff is real similar till the end, when the notes get a little blue.  I think I've almost got it.   Plundered definitely has some unique chords (for Stones standards), but I'll have to listen to it some more to try to get the tab.

All right, I just messed around with WU. There's an unusual amount of gain on Keith's guitar (on the whole album, come to think of it), which kind of obscures things, but it really is the Dice lick, and then the Memphis-soul kind of fills that Keith does around the fourth, fifth and sixth strings ... just working between frets five and seven.

I see.  He works around that C box.  Wonder if he capoed the 5th fret for it in Open G; doesn't sound like it, but it's possible.  I really dig the short solo towards the end of the song, its a Chuck Berry-type thing in C.  Doesn't Bill NOT play on WU?  I can't recall who played that funky bassline.

The TimeIsonOurSide website says either John Regan or Ivan Neville on bass. I'm guessing Regan.

...Pretty sure Keith is in standard, no capo.

Okay, for anyone still tuning in, Ry Cooder sounds to me to be playing in open-G on "Sister Morphine." I tried taping a YouTube while playing along with the track, but I'm pretty bad at "hitting the marks," as actors say—especially when the playing is as loose, and brilliant, as Cooder's. Then I tried to do it unaccompanied, but it was kind of boring...

Since you mentioned it, I tried to slide along with Ry Cooder - t'ain't easy.
I wouldn't want to post anything at this stage because as you said Cooder is brilliant and loose on it.
that takes more than a couple o'runs to get my neck around it

were you listening to the isolated track of Sticky Thumbs (recommended) or the final take on SF?

I know what you're saying about being unaccompanied.  The production really makes SM, and that's hard to recreate with just a slide guitar - an instrument that's hard to play solo, without 'open' strings/chords and rhythm.  There are a few signature licks on Morphine, my favorites being at 1:33 (after ..this place) and around 2:35 (cool 'out of the box' lick).  The outro, of course, kicks as well.

I had to check! Capo is a Dunlop. Come to think of it, so is the brass slide I used on the "Sister Morphine" vid. Good stuff. I also used a cool line of thumbpick that I found online—called Bumble Bee. Unlike generic thumbpicks, which are really for banjo players who mainly do downstroke, it's more like a flatpick and doesn't get in the way.

Damn, lovin' it (no homo).  You got a nice slide vibrato.  Being a bit of a gear noob, I only have a glass slide.  Would it be wise to look into a brass?  I play slide mostly on acoustic.  Gonna be tryin' out some of them licks tonight.

Good tone too! I think Ry used his '67 Strat on SM, but I may be wrong.

Thanks, man!

I'm agnostic on brass vs. glass. I had a much-wider glass one that I used on my middle finger for years, but lost it. I actually think I prefer that one. As for the use of the SG, it just seems to have the most slide-friendly action of all my guitars. The key for me on slide is not to use a flatpick. In my case, anyway, I seem to need to do a lot of muting with my palm to get the notes I want.

for slides I use older glass slides that are not around anymore or mudslides which are the correct length for me...I use inserts to hold them more snug against my finger...the mudslides have inserts made of denture material tat my uncle cast for me (he is a dentist)......I have always found brass to be a bit too heavy for me to get around with ease....I play bare fingers or use a 1.0 flat pick.

Interesting replies Mel and dadrob.  I suppose, like many other musical theories rooted in the blues, there is no "right or wrong answer" - it's a question of feel.  I play slide typically with my thumb, rarely as a lead instrument (partially out of respect to the song and my limited abilities).  As you say, Mel, it surely is way more important to use the right GUITAR than it is the right type of slide.  Though it'd be cool to have a brass anyway, just to have it!  I love me some open-D tuning for that, just wish I had more than 1 acoustic and 1 electric so I wouldn't be switching back and forth so often.  An SG is on my guitar wishlist for sure, slide or not.

PS - diggin' the Keith-like leg kick and swagger on the Plundered vid.  I can't seem to help but raise my shoulders when bending a note (KR style), as if my body is attached to the notes I'm playing!

Sure! I hadn't done anything from "Exile" because I figure it's been tabbed already. But that doesn't seem to have helped Ronnie much, has it? Smiley

Looking forward to it Mel, as far as Ronnie goes, he couldn't even stand in Taylor's shadow as a guitarist, I can't think of anything inventive that he's done with The Stones, he's really good at copying old songs, & even that was only in the first few years he joined The Stones, I mean what Stones songs that stand out with him on it????

Sadly, RW doesn't have 1/10th of little Mick's legacy.  But before sippin' too much of the Woodie hatorade, don't forget about "Out of Tears," one of my favorite RW moments.

I agree ... Ronnie was a big part of what made "Some Girls" great. I think he helped salvage "Undercover" and "Dirty Work" as the Glimmer Twins were disintegrating. And he added a lot of nice touches to "Voodoo Lounge."

Woody work with Jeff Beck (cited by Stanley Clarke as the reason he plays electric bass), the Faces stuff, Rod's solo material n Woody's own solo material has loads of terrific stuff. He is an elite player even if he does not possess the same melodic gifts as MT...Hell what he does Crazy Mama alone makes me a fan.

Agreed.  While he wasn't dazzling with a single memorable solo on a particular song, he had a more holistic style, giving songs like "Too Tough" and "When the Whip Comes Down" a nice edge and counter to Keith's playing.

Here we go. "Shine a Light," in which Mel Belli talks major-pentatonic scale and the technique of "imitation"!

Very well done Mel, I didn't know it was that scale (C major pentatonic) what make is you're guitar? I know it's a semi-hollow body.

Guitar is a Gibson ES-339.

Sounds to me like MT might have used the 335 on SAL ...

Maybe this is a weave, maybe not.  But for me, it's a great example of two Stones guitarists doing whatever it is they do so amazingly together (as interpreted by someone else on You Tube):

Thanks Mel.

Those are a month old. Wasn't happy with them, can't get re-motivated.

I did get a new vid cam though. Went from 3 min capability to 2 hour capability.
That's why I tried play-along mode for DLS.

Just found this old, '80s-vintage instructional video by Harvey Mandel:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmZgGonFQ6E&feature=related

Chockfull of great licks. His "Hot Stuff" solo -- not discussed here directly, but you can hear the underlying theory several times -- is probably the most technically complex piece of instrumental music the Stones ever recorded.

Enjoy!

"Hot Stuff" definitely has some mean licks on it.  Those funky scales - wish I could use them more often!

Could you please repost BBJ?  I thought I had it, but don't.
Also, did you post Traveling Man?  I thought you did, but couldn't find it.

Okay, I threw this together pretty quickly, if not haphazardly. Some of MT's work on "100 Years Ago":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDUZUg6P_Ow

The money lick, in my opinion, is the D-Dorian thing he does at the end of the outro.
