If you're so inclined Fuman, I think we would all enjoy hearing your "Don't Lie To Me" (did they play it in Ft. Worth '72?  or was it Philly?) solo - similar to MT's BBJ solo, but with an even meaner, more aggressive tone.

Here's my attempt at Mick Taylor's solo on Don't Lie To Me from Ft Worth 1972.
I want to try it again tomorrow on my other guitar . . .

Very nice!

Now for something a little off the beaten path: MT's solo on John Phillips' "Oh Virginia," which, for obvious reasons related to drugs and incest, will never become the anthem of my adopted home state!

Similar elements to "Winter" solo, with some country bending.

Love it, your playing is quite fluid.  Imagine if they just made that one a little longer in '72 (it barely hit 2 mins!), giving Keith the 1st solo then MT a 2nd; it could have been the "Little Queenie" of '72-3.

Oooo, livin' back home.  Nice work!  I'm not much of a technical player, but you really got the sound down on this one, a major scale with beautiful "country" bends as you call them.  I liken this one to MT's "Tumbling Dice" solos in 72/3.

Ah, great choice. Nice job. That's another MT solo for the ages . . .

That album is a tough listen for me, for the reasons you mentioned.
The latest release (Pussycat) has 1 outtake with MT on it (Hello Mary Lou).

Wasn't aware of that. ... I'll have to check it out!

Seems like you, Throwaway, and I and the only ones hanging out in this thread. Oh, well; three's a good-enough crowd.

Thanks Throwaway. Your idea of splitting the solos is interesting.

They both had solos on Angie live in 1973.
Keith takes the little solo when Jagger is singing:

Angie, I still Love ya baby
Every where I look I see your eyes
There ain't a woman that comes close to you
C'mon baby dry your eyes.

Taylor plays some stunningly beautiful chords underneath Keith's staccato soloing.
What a treasure, having Taylor in the Stones for that short time.

Seems like you, Throwaway, and I and the only ones hanging out in this thread. Oh, well; three's a good-enough crowd.

Well, there must be some lurkers, cause this threads got a lot of views!

To add some rhythmic playing tips to this thread:

On Get Yer Ya Ya's, you hear this bit somewhat, but it's more obvious on Love You Live - the rhythm guitar on Sympathy has a neat change.  We have the standard shapes of the E, D, A.  Then, on Ya Ya's, there's Keiths 5 strings, 3 fingers rhythm, to do the E as 4-5-4-6-4-x, the D as the same shape but a full step lower, then the A as the 2nd fret all the way across.  A little trick I've recently learned is to do the E as x-9-9-9-9/11-x  to  x-9-9-9-x-x (standard tuning, I believe Woody plays this on LYL), the D as the same but a step lower, then the same little lick at the 2nd fret for the A.  It's a fun little lick to play as the 2nd rhythm with some lead (major scale) licks thrown in during the verses.

Lots of great stuff!
The Don't Lie To Me reminds me more of Driving Sideways than anything else.

OK-so I'm going to violate the thread norm by adding someone else's stuff.  This guy seems to come the closest to the DF studio solo.  (I prefer Leeds, but that's for another day.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjLP_xI20Fg&feature=related

By the way, from time to time, there is a debate about whether the studio version has Taylor or Richards on lead.  I've no doubt that it's Taylor.

Pretty close indeed, although there is no reason to miss the few notes that he does miss, unless he hears them differently I guess.

Dead Flowers is definitely MT - why else would Keith play rhythm on the track for both MT and RW eras?

From what I know, here are Keith's leads (studio) from SF - IORR (Let It Bleed was really all Keith)

Wild Horses
Bitch
Tumbling Dice
Happy
Star Star
Aint Too Proud to Beg
It's Only Rock and Roll
Till the Next Goodbye (slide)

Tumbling Dice, I'm pretty sure was MT. He also played bass on the track, if I'm not mistaken.

My brother: Listen, at the tail-end, for the bit of bottleneck. Quintessential MT!

I admit that the last portion does sound like something MT would play, but all of the Chuck Berry sounding stuff that precedes it sounds like Keith to me. It's has a Honky Tonk Woman effect to my ears. I do hear an overdub come in near the end. Maybe you're right. Maybe MT gets the final notes? He certainly doesn't start the solo, IMO.

Could be both of them—with MT's part turned up in the mix at the very end. I just listened to it, and I'm not sure anymore.

Ok, after listening closely I am almost positive I hear MT's guitar fade in right on top of Keith's, as Keith starts to fade, and those final notes are in fact Taylor. Wow. After all these years of only hearing Keith.

Have you guys heard Taylor's little bluesy run in Loving Cup?
Right around the 2:53 - 2:55 mark, and pretty low in the mix.
Jagger sings "and my shirt's all torn", then stops and you can hear the lick start.
Just noticed it for the first time about a year ago . . .

It sounds Keith to me - there are quite a few guitars on Loving Cup, though, so it's really hard to distinguish them (at least one with capo 5).

"Time Waits For No One" is imminent. A couple parts of that thing are a bitch -- despite MT never departing from the seven notes of the A Aeolian mode!
