Just to put this horrid and utterly putrid mess of an award in perspective here is Album of they year winners and nominees over the years. Ya gotta scroll down to 1979 for the Stones only nomination of Some Girls.

I'm of the opinion Today's music is garbage! maybe I'm old but I just watched a bit of it & switched channels, what's this Lady Ga Ga crap, did she get her name from Queen's Radio Ga Ga, Elton John did a duet with her, he's a old Queen himself, The Black Eyed Peas are the worst garbage I ever heard, what in God's name kind of crap is that? & Green Day winning for best Rock album, ask John Lydon what he thinks of Green Day, punk has gone mainstream with a orchestra.
The Only Rock & Roll legend was Alice Cooper on the show, AC/DC should have won best rock album, not Green day.

Doesnt help that there was no 'rock' category from about 1966-79, ie during the Stones' peak period.

Didnt they win an award for Voodoo Lounge, though?

One consolation is that no real instruments are harmed in the making of most of that music...

Having said that, Pink's performance of 'Glitter In The Air' was tremendous.

BTW, AC/DC did win for "Best Hard Rock Performance".

I actually enjoyed many of the performances ESPCIALLY Lady Gaga. She's a little "out there" but, AHEM, so was Mick back
in the day!!! Her talent cannot be denied; and neither can Pink's!! Even Beyonce impressed me. I'd see all three of these women in concert if I had the chance.

Green Day, Jeff Beck and, believe it or not, Zac Brown Band with Leon Russell were also good.

Channel surfed quite a bit but can't dismiss the entire thing.
Nice to see lip synching was BANNED.

From Wiki:

In early 1995, while the Voodoo Lounge Tour was still in full force (not finishing until August that year) Voodoo Lounge won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.

Consequently, Voodoo Lounge would be the first Rolling Stones album to not produce significant hits in America. In the UK, meanwhile, "Love Is Strong", "You Got Me Rocking", "Out Of Tears", and "I Go Wild" were all top 40 chart hits.

I caught a little bit of the Grammys.  I saw La Gaga with & without EJ, she was better without.   Didn's see KOL win 2 Grammy, but am very glad they did.  I've been following them since the beginning.

Saw Pink's performance this am...it had a "Cirque de Soleil" vibe to it.

Saw Jeff Beck in the audience...

Dunno about that, LJ.

The woman singing with Jeff Beck was clearly lip synching, and that annoying auto tune stuff was used, too.
Jamie Foxx sounded like a robot...

Didn't see Foxx and, while Jeff Beck was good, I didn't care for the female singer.

My point is I cannot dismiss the entire show as garbage.

Nor can I.

Granted I don't listen to most of the artists that performed, but that's my choice.
One that I'm not unhappy with.

Taylor Swift is playing stadiums this summer, so somebody's buyin'...

The Jamie Foxx/T-Pain duet was garbage. I hate AutoTune (which makes them sound like robots).

I'm happy for Kings of Leon. I mean, I've liked them from their beginning (first album). Apparently they were not going to put "Use Somebody" on the album because they themselves thought it would be too mainstream.

I just hope they still play in small venues.

Hey LJ!  Flat indeed!  Ugh!  She's cute n sweet and that's all I can tell about this young gal.  For gawds sakes she cannot sing at all in my humble opinion...how did she win anything? I don't know any of these kids, yes I am OLD....and 98% of what I heard is NOT music....it just isn't music...it's atonal monotony (there is no musical range to this droning on madness so I can't call it music) i.e agony, to my ears lol...and the lyrics to some of the songs are ?????  Dull.  I can't feel any of this so called music, it does nothing to relieve my aches and pains like the real deal can in an instant.  That's how I know if it's music or not....can I FEEEEEEL it.  Or am I annoyed and agitated?  Hmmm.......

Leon Russell, Jeff Beck, and I did like his singer a lot, the blip of a tribute to Neil, all worth it for me, but I wanted Neil THERE to rock us out.

And I am glad The Kings Of Leon won.

Pink, Beyonce, and LG need to sing actual SONGS like the blues or ANYTHING that is actually a SONG.....music, cause I agree they all can sing.

I do not know how that guy with his pants down in back and up in the front kept those things on....while he ran all about the stage with MnM getting bleeped constantly, how friggin annoying is that, btw, I have NO clue what they were carrying on about....Yes, I am OLD.  And I am glad I didn't grow up having this madness in my ears....in fact I am saying a sincere prayer RIGHT NOW!  We had the best music EVER to grow up with.  How lucky we are!

The Grammy's are rigged.  Bob didn't win a thing for TTL, which I listen to many times everyday....and like it more each time....so he wins in my household each and everyday baby!

Grammy that!

I am 27 and I don't like any of the stuff that was presented at this award show.

All of the stuff going on at the Grammy's--that's what is popular these days. Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Gaga. I don't know...that's all fine and good. People can like what they like.

Bob Lefsetz's take on Taylor Swift:

Grammys

I’ll say that I was impressed with the Michael Jackson tribute.  No, not his kids, who certainly aren’t his biologically, and acquitted themselves quite well, but the performances…  Everybody could sing!  Could almost make you a Celine Dion fan. Especially after experiencing Taylor Swift.

How awful was she?

Dreadful.

"Fearless" deserved to win Album of the Year.  I was glad it did.  Scuttlebutt was it was DMB’s year, but to say "GrooGrux" is good is to be a tie-dyed hippie hanging out in the parking lot before a show that features great playing but mediocre material. "GrooGrux" sold to a small coterie, most people don’t care.  But Taylor Swift is as mainstream as you can get.  Triumphing in two formats.  Speaking her truth to her audience.  I love "Fearless".  You can play it from start to finish, again and again, it’s honest.  But last night’s performance…

Do you remember Billy Squier’s pink video? Which killed his career overnight? Take a peek: 'Rock Me Tonight'
What was a hard rocker doing prancing around in a pink tank top?  What was a neophyte artist doing sharing a stage with a legend who made it before auto-tune, before studio tricks could make anybody a singer?

I don’t need to analyze the performance.  (Hell, what I don’t get is how Taylor rearranged her own hit song.) But what I am interested in is the impact.  Because now, everybody knows that Taylor Swift can’t sing.  Is this what they’ll remember?

Now unlike Billy Squier’s pink video, there won’t be endless repetition on MTV.  And one can question how much of the target audience saw this performance.  But the cognoscenti did, and to what degree do they now want to distance themselves from Ms. Swift?

In other words, did Taylor Swift kill her career overnight?

I’ll argue she did.  Oh, I’m not fully convinced of that, but let’s start from this position.

She’ll be even further hated in Nashville (and what kind of fucked up world do we live in where the CMAs are better than the Grammys?)  I’d love to say whored out Top Forty radio stations will ignore her, but this is doubtful, still…

In one fell swoop, Taylor Swift consigned herself to the dustbin of teen phenoms.  Who we expect to burn brightly and then fade away.  From New Kids On The Block to Backstreet Boys to Miley Cyrus.  A wall is created, stating you can’t come any further. Debbie Gibson can appear in shows on Broadway, but she can’t have a hit record, the powers-that-be won’t let it happen.

Taylor’s too young and dumb to understand the mistake she made.  And those surrounding her are addicted to cash and are afraid to tell her no.  But last night Taylor Swift SHOULD have auto-tuned.  To save her career.

They say it’s easy to fake it in the twenty first century.

But one thing we know is the truth will always come out.

It’s hard to be a singer if you can’t sing.

Ultimately, we want our stars to be genuine.  Without this credibility, your time atop the charts is brief.

Taylor Swift shortened her career last night.  And since she says she calls all her own shots, she has to shoulder the blame. Yes, her dream came true, she made it, she’s a star, but the real test is longevity.  Elton John can play with GaGa decades later.  Will Taylor Swift be duetting with the stars of the 2030s?  Doubtful.

lefsetz.com

Hope the kid has banked some cash.
It might be 14:59 for her...

Too funny, gimmekeef!

and Bobby boy Lefsetz was singing Ms. Swift's praises all last year...

I don't mind big production, glitzy numbers (Mick Jagger), if there is some substance to the music.  Must admit I missed GaGa and Pink and was only just in time to catch Beyonce's Big Back End.  I wouldn't say every performer was terrible, but to be truthful I am not gonna go out a buy Lady Antebellum's CD or Zach Brown's either and they were the best of what I managed to sit through....

Lefsetz still loves the album.

He just realized that she can't cut it live, and had previously accused her of using Auto-Tune.
She even called him to deny it - Taylor Swift Calls.

Funny that he thinks she should've used it last night...

Hey Boomy!

I've seen KOL 5 times, they're very talented.  I'm happy for their well-deserved success, but they lost a little gold dust once the mainstream claimed them.   Still, talented as hell.

this much i know.  i caught the final 2 hours of the awards last night and i enjoyed it.  the taylor swift duet with stevie nicks was great as well as her other 2 songs she did....she was a bit off key, but who cares.  i thought the 4 singers that did the michael jackson tribute was awesome.  i missed the lady ga ga elton john bit.  i watched the bon jovi songs....errrr.  but the thing i did notice is that they moved this show on like never before.  i can remember watching this presentation in the past and whe performers would be accepting their awards they would get all long winded and seem to carry on for hours telling there glory stoys and thanking this and thanking that....not last night.  it seemed on and off....say your thank you's and say them fast and bam you're out of there otherwise they start playing the music and brightening the lighs.  they seem to have it down now when accepting your award....say your speal for 45 seconds and then get the fuck off the stage...i like that.

from the 2 hours i watched this show i must say i liked it.  the presentation was excellent and so were the costumes and what not.  tonights gonna to be a good good night...i give it an A

get down

I thoroughly agree, MrD. Love that album. I saw them at MSG  and that show cemented me as a fan for life. What a tight band. And they focus so much on their fans. And yep, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt with the new Broadway show. We already have tickets.  Smiley

As for the Grammys, I loved Gaga and Elton (a perfect pair) and Pink was amazing. Taylor Swift sounded like shit and she looked like she was wearing Medieval bedclothes. Poor Stevie Nicks didn't seem to know what to make of the whole situation. I wanted Gaga to win Album of the Year. She had 5 #1 hits in the past 12 months, and the Grammys usually like to celebrate commercial success. I saw her a couple of weeks ago at Radio City Music Hall and her Monster Ball is well-produced sensory overload. Very entertaining.

Swift sounded FLAT to me. Totally off key.
Unimpressed with her.

Absolutely. She was flat all night. I could barely listen.....well, I didn't listen after awhile.

I was pretty mesmerized by Pink's performance.

I'm not a country girl, but you can tell that the Zac Brown Band has talent...and loved seeing Leon up there. Smiley

I even enjoyed the Michael Jackson song....maybe not all of the performers {but I loves me some Smokey Robinson. Smiley, but I liked the song.

I did NOT need to hear 2 vocalists SCREAMING "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". That is not a screaming song.  Shit!

And, what's the use of having rap stuff when you have to bleep most of it out? Don't like rap. Never will.

Ok, I guess I can admit that Green Day is a guilty pleasure for me, too.  Tongue At least there is some semblance of music there! Melody---verse, chorus...

I think that Lady GaGa, Pink, and Beyonce can all sing. Beyonce has a wonderful voice. It's just the choice of "music".... Roll Eyes

And, I've come to the conclusion, that it's really not ABOUT the music anymore. One critic was saying today that he didn't go to bed singing any song from last night---because they really aren't "songs" anymore! Just a bunch of notes, arranged and somehow remembered by the hard memorizing vocalist. It's really all about performance with so many of these acts.

Will we be listening to any of this music 40 years from now?? As we do our Stones and Who and Kinks and such? Most of it will be long gone and forgotten. And so will the "artists".

Yeah, I'm old too. Wink But........"They REALLY don't make 'em like that anymore!" you made a grown man cry

i hear what you are saying there souix , but lets not jump the gun here, times have changed. sometimes it seems it is all about glitz and glammer and who can be the weirdest [example lady ga ga]  what i was thankful during last nights grammys was there was not a lot of the hip hop rap crap. when i heard about the upcoming michael jackson tribute i set in to believe it was going to be a half hour scene...not that i hate michael, but i was glad to see it was 4 good performers came out and did a good 4 minute version of 1 of his songs.  i think the grammys are getting it together these days because the the artists that win awards have just seconds to give there thanks before they move along and we don't have to hear their long winded boring glory stories of yesteryear.  they have 30-40 seconds to say their thanks and move along...thank god

I am 27 and I don't like any of the stuff that was presented at this award show.

All of the stuff going on at the Grammy's--that's what is popular these days. Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Gaga. I don't know...that's all fine and good. People can like what they like.

Hey Boomy!  Indeed they can like what they like.  I wonder what I would take to if I was a teenager in this day and age.  I don't have children so I haven't been in touch with the "music scene" since my younger days.

Then I came to this message board and started learning about the blues.  I've been going back in time to get my education ever since.  Smiley

I owe this board my life!

xoxoxo,
Martha

Yes, and he took it right over and gave it to it's rightful winner...Bob Dylan!  LOL

I love the fact that someone who sings like Bob Dylan consistently gets nominated for a 'best vocal' performance, and sometimes even wins.

Odd choice of nomination for Bruce. 'Working on a Dream' is a Bruce-by-numbers song and wouldnt be many people's choice for being anywhere near the best song on that album.

I like some 'new stuff' and don't get it when people our age just dismiss shit because it doesn't speak to them personally.
You're right, Lady Gaga is her own thing and you can't deny the talent of people like Beyonce and Pink.....
But i haven't watched the grammies since Helen Reddy and Andy Williams co-hosted...now those were the days - because they didn't pretend to be cool. It was what it was.

The backlash from Taylor Swift's Grammy performance continues...

Scott Borchetta, president and CEO of Swift's record label Big Machine Records, issued a statement in defense of TS.

“The facts say she is the undisputed best communicator that we’ve got," Borchetta said. "So when she says something or feels something it affects more people than anybody else. Maybe she’s not the best technical singer, but she is the best emotional singer. Everybody gets up there and is technically perfect people don’t seem to want more of it. There’s not an artist in any other format that people want more of than they want of Taylor. I think (the critics) are missing the whole voice of a generation that is happening right in front of them. Maybe they are jealous or can’t understand that. But obviously the people that she talks to are engaged with her. No one is perfect on any given day. Maybe in that moment we didn’t have the best night, but in the same breath, maybe we did.”

I'm sorry but a sheet of sandpaper has more emotional content than Taylor Swift's singing voice.
