Unprecedented: Muddy Waters, Newport 1969

Tomorrow  January 26, 2010 we’ll be releasing an exceptional Muddy Waters show. Recorded on July 6th, 1969 at the Newport Folk Festival, this solo acoustic set is unique and historically significant, and its story must be told.

Waters was booked to perform two days later at the 1969 Festival, but arrived in town early — which turned to be a good thing, as his idol, the legendary Son House, could not make a scheduled appearance on the 6th. Like a true professional, Muddy stepped in and played an unrehearsed solo set on acoustic guitar.

This is a Muddy Waters we are not used to hearing. In 1969, the emerging blues-rock scene coming out of Britain was universally copying Muddy Waters’ electric guitar style. The albums Muddy Waters Live At Newport 1960 and Electric Mud influenced a who’s who of guitar players. To hear a quality recording during this period of him playing unplugged is really special; not since the days of Alan Lomax was Muddy Waters captured in such a way.

We at the Vault were so inspired by this Muddy Waters concert that we are dedicating all of next week to concerts that complement the bluesman. We are releasing a video of a full performance by Muddy Waters in 1971, a rare Willie Dixon show from 1972, and three more Newport 1969 concerts from the same date as Muddy. Make plans to be at your computer on Tuesday morning.

Can there be a better illustration of live music? To prove it we will be selling and streaming this concert for the first time ever!

Enjoy!

Anyone remember that Stones Voodoo Lounge CD-ROM that came out about 15 years ago?

I always loved that clip of Muddy performing at Newport that was included on it. What a mover!

Yes I have that and at the time it was really cool. Now pretty dated and Im not surprised it isnt for sale on the RS.COM site for $99. Saw Muddy in Hamilton Canada a few months before he passed. Seeing BB KINg next Saturday here with Buddy Guy. Love the legends! I can record WAV files directly from the vault if anyone wants a copy.
