Just wondering if you still buy records, old and new. I do. I love vinyl.

...

(That's not my collection!)

I still have my shelves full, but over Christmas, a younger cousin took a stack of original Dylans etc....
I don't rummage flea-markets anymore....and i used to take such pride.
I keep most of the classic stuff, but the dust sucks....
and without a real turntable, you can do them justice anyway....

In the last years I bought more Vinly LPs than CDs, new and used. Vinly is permanent, eternal, CDs will have problems in some years, the silver layer will separate from the clear solid base

I have a lot of complete collections in Vinly being Frank Zappa the biggest

True.....
from a collector's standpoint, i'm not buying anymore, but cds have proven to be more disposable than 8-track...worse.
You could usually 'fix' a skip on vinyl and you had to make a real effort to do irrepairable damage to vinyl.
My cds in the car are ruined when i hit a bump in the road and they can't be fixed...I haven't gone iPod yet...and cds are all i have, but the technology, while convenient, is not durable.

they lied...

found this old artcle on Jade talking about her own musical collection....about a vinyl colleciton being the true measure of a true music fan...and that is so true.

I only buy Stones rarities on vinyl: in the past few years I got most of the old EP's for a fair price and a pretty rare Dutch SFTD single from 1973. Other than that I'm mostly still in the cd-age...

I have some 750 vinyl LP's and about 50 assorted EP's, 7 inchers, 12 inchers, and 45's...but I haven't bought any vinyl since 1988.  I break 'em out only a half dozen or so times a year lately.

I still buy vinyl because I like the sound quality better.

The first CDs I bought in 1988 are getting little black pot marks in them.  None of them play all the way through.  Now my Elvis records from the 1950's that I inherited from mom still play.  Says all I need to know about the 'true' durability of CDs.

I sold most of my vinyl years ago, it's o.k. if one has a permanent home for it, but every time I moved that weighed more then most of my things, it fact it weighed a ton! I still kept a few albums, in this day & age I honestly thought that it would never come back, but to some it did, I have all my music on files in my computer anyway, & that's what I use as my player, I haven't used my C.D. player since the late 90's.

Didn't know that about CDs always thought they were longlasting like they said about DVDs, u'no if you take care of them they'll last for ever or something

what actually happens to CDs? is a heat thing?

i'd love to get into vinyl, dont know what type of player to buy and dont have the money to buy it, definitely will in the future

also thought i'd mention, someone said something about mp3s, the other day i almost lost a lot of music, liek 200GBs worth because the hard drive they were on had a problem, i had to take al the data off it put it on to a friends hard drive (who thank god have 500gbs free) and then reformat the drive and put everything back on - what im saying is vinyl and even CD you have it and the only thing thats going to destroy them is a massive fire or incremental damage to individual items - so mp3s arent really the way to go either

if anyone has any points about first buy vinyl players or even a specific (not too expensive) model that is good to look into i'd appreciate it

Vinyl is my absolute favourite. I am lucky enough to have inherited my fathers old LP’s and 45’s: without them, I am not sure if I would be here today. I discovered the Rolling Stones through wearing out his old Decca Big Hits a Through The Past Darkly compilations. I don’t have a huge collection by any means, though and I would dearly like to add to what I have. Thing is, CD’s are more convenient and I use my i-Pod for listening more than anything else.

My favourite vinyl record: Pictures Of Lily – The Who. My 45rpm copy sounds so raw and energising. Pete’s Rickenbacker slashes and chops its way through the speakers: it sizzles with angst and emotion. The CD version on my Who Best-Of is pants.

In an ideal world: vinyl all the way!

I only hear that story about cd's that were produced in the 80s, mostly in hot environments. I seem to remember Zack had some problems with his early discs a while back, but maybe I made that up.

I love my vinyl. I used to have over 2,000 LPs, but over the years it's dwindled to about 200. Still have my original Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Dylan, and a bunch of others. Wish I still had my complete sets though.

I have nothing to play them on but I still buy Stones vinyls and some others that I pick up at garage sales, specialty shops and thrift shops. It's hard to find them in the 'modern' stores like Best Buy. I used to find them at Virgin but they closed down all the US stores. It's like a little hobby for me to collect them, mainly for the cover art and the sentimental nostalgia value.

I've heard about "CD rot".  I guess I've been lucky as all of the CD's I've gotten (first in 1986) still play (first was 'Let It Bleed', second was 'Dark Side Of The Moon').

remember that cds vs vinyl argument?
I don't think its a contest anymore.....
the novelty (convenience) of the cd has worn off and i think most people acknowledge the superiority of vinyl.....as a medium, but cds, however flawed and cheap, are still more convenient.
I have an old pioneer brain (late 60s) that still works with two humongous Kenwood speakers from the late 70s and used to have a great old-school turntable i bought at a pawn shop... the sound was big and glorious....but i can't exactly take it everywhere and i've been without a decent turntable for years....because the flimsy things available now suck. I still play my cds and they sound great....if i could listen to vinyl, i would, but the machinery is harder to come by....if you want it to be great.
I love the hum of a record.
Its the difrference between hearing something and feeling it and with vinyl, the deep grooves are physical.

A properly mastered and produced CD beats vinyl every time, sentiment notwithstanding.  The problem is with the mastering and production.

I won't argue with the sound quality of a cd, but the problem for me is the longevity...they just don't last.

I buy vinyl.  I have a bigger bang on vinyl signed by all but I'm afraid to touch it.
I have a bunch of old motown too. It sounds really good late at night. b/c of the scratches.  it just sounds better.

Haven't listened to them since the early 80's.Takes up too much space.I'm into buying used tapes for a couple of bucks though.Record companies used to be sent those by the thousands and they'd typically only listen to a track or two before signing.Guess I'm both cheap and old fashioned. The remastered cds should contain a bonus disc each to peak my interest. The best of the b-sides plus remixes.I'd take any of the old remastered on cd,used and cheaper would be better.I store those with the tapes of said album.

speaking of space, anyone know a better way of storing 45s?
mine are just stacked in stacks - which is scratching the hell out of them..
....
But i'm not as much into their 'collectibility' as i am just having that original Sun or Stax label. I'd love to showcase them more properly...any suggestions?
