Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood Artwork In Largest Ever Exhibition

The Huffington Post UK  |

Posted: 08/08/2012 16:34 Updated: 08/08/2012 16:36

We all know that this year marks the 50th anniversary since the Rolling Stones formed. And, much to the dubious excitement of the band's fans, artwork associated with the ageing rockers is creeping into galleries all over the place.

This time, it's actually been created by an ageing Stone - Ronnie Wood. Wood, normally associated with large hair and guitars, also makes art. Art which can be seen at his largest ever show, including some pieces which have never been seen before.

...
Wood's study of the band, 1979

Ronnie Wood: A Major Retrospective of 50 years of Rock and Roll features work which documents Wood's life in the limelight as well other sketches and drawings.

Personally, based on these images we're not convinced he missed his true calling as an artist, but maybe we're being a little harsh.

What do you think? Worthy of an entire show, or just another example of the artwork pandering to the rich and famous?

What's with Ronnie in Today's header, painted fingernails??????? I know guys can be a little fem sometimes but painted nails??? this must be a pic from years ago, not now.
By the way I use fake nails myself because my nails break like crazy, & I can't fingerpick (play classical guitar style) when I don't have nails, it feels like I got a finger missing when I don't have a nail, I tried everything, hard as nails, etc but they still break.

Doesn't look all that old to me. I'm going to say mid-90s, perhaps around the time of Voodoo Lounge.

Acrylic nails weaken your natural nail.  The new thing is this "gel".  (I forgot the name.)  Nail salons are putting some sort of "gel" over your real nail to keep it from breaking.

Ronnie Wood auctions Rolling Stones memorabilia

Ronnie and Jo Wood's divorce was finalised last year after 24 years of marriage

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and ex-wife Jo Wood are auctioning off their shared collection of art and band memorabilia.

The couple's divorce was finalised last year after 24 years of marriage, following their separation in 2008.

Tour clothing and a custom-painted Fender Stratocaster, depicting a Stones recording session, are among the items going under the hammer on 27 October.

The auction is expected to raise up to $500,000 (£388,000).

Darren Julien of Julien's Auctions said he expected the sale, to be held in Beverley Hills, to do "very well".

"They are still very good friends and they just decided it was time to simplify and sell some of their property," he explained.

The Woods separated in 2008 after Ronnie's widely reported relationship with waitress Ekaterina Ivanova.

Part of the proceeds will go to MusiCares, the Grammys charity that offers recovery to people in the music industry.

The collection features memorabilia spanning four decades, from the guitarist's work with the Rolling Stones, his earlier association with Faces and his solo career.

Items include worn leather jackets, backstage passes from various Rolling Stones tours, and portraits of Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and Bob Dylan.

Antiques, furniture and art from the Woods' former home in Surrey will also be included in the forthcoming sale.

An Erard harp is expected to raise up to $5,000 (£3,884), while a bronze jockey statue by Dame Elisabeth Frink could fetch as much as $85,000 (£66,000).

Wood, 65, has been focusing on his art career of late and opened an art show in April entitled, Faces, Time and Places in New York.

He also fronts programmes on Absolute Radio and the Sky Arts Channel that have him chatting and "jamming" with fellow musicians.

Not so fast.....This could get juicy....

11:32AM BST 26 Sep 2012
Ronnie Wood has said he is staggered after his ex-wife Jo put a collection of Rolling Stones memorabilia up for auction including his two treasured Fender Stratocaster custom-painted guitars.

The former model, 57, whose divorce from the guitarist was finalised last year, is even selling the four poster bed the pair shared at their Surrey estate and portraits that Wood painted of Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan.

The couple split up very publicly in 2008 after Wood, 65, left his wife of more than 20 years for 21-year-old former cocktail waitress Ekaterina Ivanova.

However a spokesman said the guitarist was angry that his personal items had been included in the sale at Julien’s auctions in Los Angeles.

“Ronnie was asked by Jo some time ago if he wished to add some items to an auction and he said he did not want to participate," said the spokesman.

"He is therefore shocked and disappointed that this auction is being misrepresented as a joint sale. This is not the case.

"Furthermore he is staggered that some of the items being offered at the auction are clearly his personal belongings, which did not pass to Jo as part of the divorce proceedings.

"The Tour Clothes being offered belong to the Rolling Stones and are not hers to sell. Ronnie feels saddened that Jo has taken this course of action and wants the public to know he has not teamed up with Jo on this outrageous sale.”

However, a spokesman for Jo Wood hit back: "This is Jo's auction, it includes all the items left to her following the divorce. She's had everything in storage for three years and can't keep it any longer. Ronnie has been kept in the loop of the sale.'

Jo Wood, who is set to release an autobiography on her life as the wife of a Rolling Stone, claims she is selling many of the items that were left to her when their marriage ended.

They include the guitarist's stage worn leather jackets and clothing and two Fender Stratocaster custom-painted guitars, books, guitar picks, vinyl record albums and backstage passes which she collected, up for sale.

The auction, set to take place next month in Los Angeles, includes portraits by the guitarist, whose paintings have been exhibited, of Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan.

From their former home, a harp has been put up for auction at 4,000 dollars (£2,500) and a four-poster bed at 5,000 dollars (£3,000), along with a mahogany dining table, artwork and equestrian paintings.

A travelling case containing a double burner electric stove used to make family meals while on the road during Rolling Stones' tours is going up for sale.

A portion of the proceeds from the October 27 sale, at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, will go to MusiCares, a charity which provides emergency financial assistance and addiction recovery to people in the music industry.

Rolling Stones memorabilia auctioned after divorce

By Andrea Burzynski
NEW YORK | Sun Oct 28, 2012 6:29pm EDT

...
(Reuters) - An assortment of Rolling Stones memorabilia and artwork provided by
Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and his ex-wife was sold in a two-day auction,
Julien's Auctions said on Sunday.

The collection featured memorabilia spanning four decades from the guitarist's work
with the band, and included several worn leather and velvet jackets, real and cardboard
guitars, tour ephemera and a signed lithograph of Eric Clapton.

Among the items were a white leather coat worn by Wood that sold for $8,960, and a
lithograph of Eric Clapton drawn by Wood that features his signature as well as Clapton's
that fetched $5,120.

Despite being made of cardboard, a guitar cutout gifted to Wood by Keith Richards sold
for $6,875. The real thing commanded almost nine times that price, with a 1955 Fender
Stratocaster guitar often played on stage by Wood bringing in $60,800.

Bidding took place live online as well as in person and by phone at Julien's Beverly Hills
gallery on Friday and Saturday.

The auction comes ahead of the release next February of the memoirs of Wood's ex-wife
Jo, which promise to reveal her tales of life as the wife of a Rolling Stone.

Ronnie and Jo Wood were married for 23 years before separating in 2008 when Ronnie
left her for a young cocktail waitress named Ekaterina Ivanova. The couple's divorce was
finalized in 2011.

After the auction was announced in September, the former couple issued opposing
statements feuding about the ownership of the auction items, but seemed to have
worked out their disagreements. Julien described the items for sale as jointly owned
and said that they were part of the couple's divorce settlement.

Part of the proceeds from the auction will go to MusiCares, the Grammy Awards
charity that offers help to people in the music industry with finance and addiction.

Wood has recently been focused on his visual art career, but is best known as a
musician with the Rolling Stones and The Faces. He has been inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.

In addition to her upcoming memoirs, Jo Wood - a former model - has also
founded a skincare line.

Ronnie Wood engaged: Report

By WENN.COM

Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones outside the Trabendo venue in Paris where the legendary band performed a secret concert to an intimate crowd, October 25, 2012 (WENN.COM)

The Rolling Stones rocker Ronnie Wood is engaged to marry for a third time, according to a U.K. report.

The 65-year-old guitarist has been dating theatre producer Sally Humphreys for six months, and proposed to her last week.

A source tells Britain's The Sun, "Ronnie and Sally have been friends a long time. He always had an eye for her but she was in a relationship. They've been inseparable for months and he decided to tie the knot again. (Bandmate) Keith Richards has been laughing about it. He's sick of buying him wedding presents."

Wood split from Jo, his wife of 23 years, after his affair with a Russian waitress was exposed in 2008. He was previously married to Krissy Findlay from 1971 to 1978.
