How the Faces’ Ronnie Lane Stopped Ronnie Wood Joining the Stones
Andrew Vaughan|02.27.2012

Talking to the Independent newspaper, while puffing on an electronic cigarette, Ronnie Wood let slip that he could have been a Rolling Stone long before before he joined the biggest band in the world.

Last year’s Sony Radio Personality of the Year said: “They rang up once when I was rehearsing with the Faces in Bermondsey, and Ronnie Lane picked up the phone and said, ‘No, Ronnie’s quite happy where he is.’”

With hindsight, Wood thinks that Lane may have done him a favor. “Five years later I found out... I wasn’t ready for it though, I’d have been a junkie or OD-ed or something.”

“What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there,” he says. “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.” - Keef

Ronnie Wood's 'Faces, Time and Places' art exhibit arrives in New York City

Carla Hay
Rolling Stones Examiner
http://www.examiner.com

Ronnie Wood is not just known as a guitarist for the Rolling Stones. He is also a critically acclaimed and accomplished painter and illustrator. His latest art exhibit, titled "Faces, Time and Places," features numerous portraits by Wood, including those of the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.

"Faces, Time and Places" made its London debut in November 2011. (Wood attended the exhibit opening on November 8, 2011.) Now, the collection arrives in New York City for an exhibit at 498 Broome Street, from April 9 to June 30, 2012.

The Broome Street gallery is open every day (except major holidays) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time. Private appointments are available.

The exhibit includes paintings, drawings and limited-edition prints available for sale, many of which have never been seen before by the public. Wood and Brandon Coburn selected the pieces in the exhibit.

The New York City exhibit coincides with Wood's second induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As previously reported, Wood is set to be inducted as a member of the Faces at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in Cleveland on April 14, 2012.

Wood is an original member of the Faces, the band he was in before he joined the Rolling Stones in the mid-1970s. Wood and the surviving members of the Faces (including Rod Stewart) are expected to attend and will most likely do a reunion performance. Wood was part of a revamped lineup of the Faces (without Stewart) that toured in 2010 and 2011.

In 1989, Wood received his first induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Rolling Stones. He is the only member of the Rolling Stones to have two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions.

New Ronnie Wood Art Exhibit to Open Next Month in New York City

21 March 2012
http://www.classichitsandoldies.com

...

A new exhibit of Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood‘s artwork will open at the 498 Broome Street gallery in New York City on April 9.

The exhibition, titled “Faces, Time and Places,” originally debuted last November in London.  Its U.S. premiere is timed to celebrate the rocker’s impending second induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; he’ll be honored as a member of the Faces at an April 14 ceremony in Cleveland.

Wood helped choose the paintings and drawings featured in the collection, which includes portraits of his Rolling Stones band mates, Eric Clapton and various other celebrities.  The artwork, as well as limited-edition prints, will be sold at the gallery.

The exhibit will run until June 30.

FACES TO REUNITE FOR ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

by: Dave Lifton 5 hours ago

...

Classic rock fans may not be getting the Guns N’ Roses reunion that they were hoping for at next month’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, but one long-disbanded group will be reuniting. The Faces, who were living the sex, drugs and rock n’ roll lifetstyle before any of the Gunners had gotten their first tattoos, will perform for the first time together since 1993.

In a recent interview, drummer Kenney Jones let the news slip out that Rod Stewart will join Jones, Ron Wood and Ian McLagan onstage in Cleveland on April 14.

“Contrary to what some people might think, we’re all still great mates and we’ve never said we wouldn’t play together again,” Jones told Music Radar. “We all had dinner about a month ago and decided that the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame would be the perfect time and place.

Both the Faces and the Small Faces, which was the group’s name from 1965-69 when Steve Marriott was the lead singer, will be honored at the event. Marriott, who left the Small Faces to form Humble Pie, died in a house fire in 1991. Inducting both groups will be Stevie Van Zandt, who is currently on the road with Bruce Springsteen but does not have a concert scheduled that night.

Jones also said that they will perform three songs, two by the Faces and one by the Small Faces. We’ll go out on a limb and say “Stay With Me,” “Ooh La La” and “Itchycoo Park.”

There is no word yet on who will play bass to fill the shoes of Ronnie Lane, who died in 1997. At a charity gig in 2009, Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones sat in. For their 2010 tour (with Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall singing lead), Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols played bass. We wonder what Tetsu Yamauchi, who joined the Faces when Lane quit in 1973, is doing these days.

Ronnie wrote IORR? Boy did he get screwed on that!

Well, he co-wrote it, but as he wasn't a Stone and was doing his first solo album, its not as if he had much bargaining power for getting a credit on a Stones album.

Every song that Mick or Keith writes for a Stones record gets credited to them both, so I guess no way was Mick going to have the royalties equally split THREE ways.

So, Keith gets half the publishing on a song he didnt write, and Ronnie gets merely a 'inspiration by' credit.

It was basically a trade-off. Each them ended up dropping their rights to being credited as co-writers for the song which appeared on their respective albums. Mick and Ronnie wrote the two songs together, but where Mick gets half the royalties (with Keith getting the rest) on IORR, Ronnie gets the full credit for 'I Can Feel The Fire'.

On the face of it, it reads like Ronnie got the better deal - until you realise that Mick's record has probably sold about 30 million copies on various albums down the years, and Ronnie's has probably sold about 30.

This is looking really good, glad Steve Marriott is getting recognized, I wonder too what happened to Tetsu Yamauchi, I used to work with a guy who knew him, I guess Rod wants to get back to his Rock roots, but I think his day job will always be a Las Vegas entertainer.

Interesting. Never heard that before.

He has, of course, an 'inspiration by' credit on 'Hey Negrita' as well, but 'IORR' seems to fit into the same time frame as 'Feel The Fire', as both were recorded at The Wick in spring 1974 and were released that summer.

'Negrita' seems to have been brought to a Stones session when they were recording in Munich the following spring and Ronnie was 'auditioning' for the second guitarist vacancy.

from timeisonourside.com

TrackTalk

That number came about from Keith and I in a hotel, you know... idea swaps. And it eventually came around to, What was that one you were working on, Woody? So I thought, Oh, great, here's my chance. I immediately made up this riff.

- Ron Wood, 1982

All of us, independently and together, were into reggae, and it was also a mood of the time. I had this particular lick that I took into the studio and the others said, What are we going to start with? and I said, I've got this song. Charlie was sitting behind his kit, so he was already into it and then Keith and Mick both got into the motion of it. That was Hey Negrita, which came together very easily. The key to getting a song across in this band is never to try and write all the words. If you've got the rhythm, you're lucky! Let Mick write the words and then you're in with a chance.

How We Met: Ronnie Wood & Jimmy White

'The morning after we met, we went out for a drink. We got home three days later'

ADAM JACQUES
http://www.independent.co.uk

...

Jimmy White, 49

The youngest ever World Amateur Snooker champion, aged 18, White (right in picture) went on to win 23 further titles – but lost all six of his world championship finals. He lives in Surrey with his wife.

Ronnie's daughter went to the same school as mine and one Christmas, in 1988, our kids were in a play together. We were in the audience and he looked over at me and smiled as we were both having trouble with our camcorders. We had a brief chat – I'm a huge Rolling Stones fan – but I didn't for the life of me think he liked snooker. It turned out he loved it; Ronnie has a table backstage at every gig, so he and [Stones guitarist] Keith [Richards] can relax before they go on.

We arranged to meet the morning after the play, in a pub in Wimbledon. We were supposed to do our Christmas shopping afterwards but one thing led to another and we didn't make it: our wives weren't too happy with us, but I was delighted.

We hang out well together: we always have a laugh round each other's houses, playing snooker for hours on end, and Ronnie playing me some of his songs.

One night me and [snooker champion] Ronnie O'Sullivan went over and Keith was there too, and they were playing new stuff on their guitars. We watched them play all night, until they turned round to us in the early morning and said, "So, who do you think is best?" Then they watched me and O'Sullivan play snooker all the following day.

We both have a passion for horse-racing and often go to the races together. Some years ago I was supposed to present a trophy in Leicester for an afternoon race; the night before I was at Ronnie's house in Wimbledon, having some fun. I said, "Ronnie I've got to go now as I'm due to present this trophy tomorrow." And he said, "Don't worry Jimmy, you'll make it!" Then, lo and behold, I woke up the next day, late, still in Wimbledon, panicking as I had to present this trophy soon. But Ronnie just said, "Don't worry, I've got a friend with a helicopter." We got there with three minutes to spare.

Though we've both had troubles, our relationship has had no downs; he's one of my best friends. He's been incredibly generous over the years: my house is filled with his art, portraits of Marvin Gaye, Eric Clapton, each signed: "To Jimmy, get this framed, you so and so."

Ronnie Wood, 64

Having played bass in the Jeff Beck Group, and guitar with the Faces, Wood has toured with the Rolling Stones since 1976. He is also an accomplished painter; his pieces fetch up to $1m. He lives in London.

I'd found out that his daughter Lauren and my daughter Leah were at the same school but I didn't think anything of it until we bumped into each other at their Christmas play in 1988.

At the time I was following Jimmy closely on the box and he was somebody I'd always wanted to meet. We went out for a drink the following morning and then three days later we finally got home. As the days went by he said, "Don't worry, Ronnie, the kids don't expect you back till Christmas morning." I was like, "I should have been home by now Jimmy, but I'm having too much fun!"

We used to do those [drinking sessions] all the time. His ex would often drag him out of my studio the next morning by his hair across my lawn, then home. And he's like, "What's for breakfast, love?"

All that snooker gang Jimmy was part of were like rock'n'rollers. Back in the days when we were both using [drugs] he'd turn up to one of my gigs for a second then disappear for the rest of the evening.

Through the years he's given me cues and balls and one of the most important possessions in my life, my Thurston table. I always say that Jimmy was the greatest player never to have won a world championship. It's important for a snooker player to have top focus – it's much the same for a musician – and just one lapse of concentration for two seconds is all it takes to lose.

I remember one tournament when he was 10 frames ahead of John Parrott [during the 1991 World Snooker Championship] when I left London for Sheffield [where the tournament was held]. I knew Jimmy was going to win; I was so excited. But by the time I arrived he was one behind. And then Jimmy lost and it was the biggest anticlimax of my life. He came straight through the curtain backstage to me and I was like, "Oh Jimmy..." and he just replied, "It's all right, it's only a ball game." Jimmy knows how to ride disappointment.

When we chat now we're still dirty swines, but now neither of us is drinking so we talk about getting better at what we do. It's wonderful playing against him, though usually I get an aching back from bending over to fish out all those balls he pots. And how would I rate his guitar abilities? Nil out of 10.

Jimmy White features in the Snooker Legends 2012 UK tour (snookerlegends.co.uk). Ronnie Wood will play at the Jimmy White Testimonial on 2 June (whirlwindtestimonial.co.uk)

I'm pretty sure Ronnie got it right. I was always under the impression the trade was IORR for "Fire". Went and double checked in the various Ronnie Bios. In the book "Ronnie" it's on Pg 99 about the trade at the Wick for Fire and IORR.
"Negrita" came a little later. It's the one where he brought it into the sessions early on in his apprenticeship, and Charlie made the remark about Ron already bossing the Stones around.

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood has been chosen to curate a concert celebrating the music of Chess Records for Bluesfest UK in June.

Ronnie will perform at the show and bring along some very special friends to play with him as well.

Chess Records was founded in Chicago in 1950 by brothers Leonard and Phillip Chess. The label was at 2120 S. Michigan Avenue. That address became famous as the title of a 1964 Rolling Stones years later.

Chess Records featured the world's finest blues artists including Chuck Berry, Willie Dixon, Do Diddley, Memphis Slim, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williams II, John Lee Hooker and Buddy Guy.

The Rolling Stones recorded a total of 26 songs at Chess Records including 'Satisfaction', 'Time Is On My Side', 'Little Red Rooster' and 'It's All Over Now'.

The association with Chess continued when The Stones set up their own label 'Rolling Stones Records' and hired Leonard's son Marshall to run the business.

Ronnie has been working on a setlist for his show and it will include the Chess classics No Particular Place To Go, At Last, My Babe, Hoochie Coochie Man, I'd Rather Go Blind, I'm A Man, Smokestack Lighnin', Forty Days and Forty Nights and Maybellene.

Ronnie Wood and Friends ' Celebrating The Chess Records Story will be held at the Hammersmith Apollo on Saturday, June 30, 2012.
