Congratulations to the 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees!

Today, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced ABBA, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies and The Stooges as its 2010 artist inductees. Also being inducted this year as individual recipients of the Ahmet Ertegun Award will be David Geffen and songwriters Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Elle Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell. The ceremony will take place on March 15, 2010 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City and will air live on Fuse, Madison Square Garden’s national music television network, as part of the three-year broadcast deal between the Foundation and Fuse.

“We are very happy to present this year’s inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as they represent a great cross-section of artists that define the broad spectrum and history of rock and roll and people that have contributed immeasurably to our business” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President & CEO Joel Peresman.

The 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performer inductees were chosen by over 500 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twenty-five years after their first recording is released.

All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Through approaches as creative and diverse as the music itself, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum tells the story of rock music with its exhibits, education programs and Library and Archives, which will open to the public in downtown Cleveland in late 2010.

Presenters and performers at the induction will be announced at a later date. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be televised live on Fuse; more information can be found at fuse.tv.

I don't mind popular, ABBA is fine for me because they have had an influence on artists...influence, that's the key
everything else is subjective....you can call Chic disco, but there is no doubt they influenced people too...
but when i think Genesis, i think hummable and that's not the same thing as influential, but that's just me....

Sure, Genesis became a mainstream pop act, thanks in large part to MTV.
But there's a whole 'nother side to them, one which I enjoy far more than their 80's output.

Gabriel-era albums like 'Foxtrot', 'Selling England By The Pound' and 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway'
are miles from the hit makers they later became.

And imo the first couple of post-Gabriel albums, 'A Trick Of The Tail' and 'Wind & Wuthering' are excellent, as is the live 'Seconds Out'.

A Trick of the Tail is a very good album. A far cry from the popster band they would become. Check some of this out.

Answer: 15 - they've been eligible since 1994.

Bee Gees, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, Del Shannon, the Staple Singers,

just adds injury to the insult. I wish Iggy would tell them to

What was your first reaction to the news that the Stooges will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010?
Well, very surprised. I didn't think I'd ever see the inside of that neighborhood actually. Probably because the group had a very long outsider history, going back way back before there was ever a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It took us a lot longer to get some sort of general acceptance than probably most people.

You've been eligible for about 15 years or so.
We've been rejected seven times and we would have set a record I think if it happened again. We would have been the record holders I think. The first few times I'd always hear we got nominated about a month after it happened. Then the lag time started decreasing until it'd be the day after, all these people calling me to say "congratulations." It sort of became one of those things like Charlie Brown and the football. And it's always Lucy's idea. I'd run for the damn thing. But somebody every year was nominating us and then it was like, "OK, Stooges, come on, just run and kick the ball." Whoops.

After I got over my sort of "Really? — Yeah really!" I had about two hours of a strong emotional reaction. The same sort I started getting when our group reformed and we started going out and starting playing positive gigs for five, eight, ten thousand people. I don't know what sort of thoughts go into that — I don't know if it's vindication or what. But I went through a couple hours of that and then I kind of scratched my head and thought, "Am I still cool? Or is that over now?" And I'm only successful. But there is the whole angle. There are all these great, great musicians. Everyone I've looked up to was included in that. It's a game and then when all these greats are included and you're not, it sort of says "You're not ...whatever." And then when you are included it's like, "Hey! You're all right. You made something good. You made some good stuff." So I think all that is just very human.

How do you think Ron Asheton, who we lost earlier this year, would feel about it?
It would have meant a lot of him, the Hall of Fame. He waited longer for his success than I did. More than anyone in the group, he was a very stalwart Michigan boy. He was a regular guy and he enjoyed the extent to which some regular folks were getting to know him and his music. And I know his brother too, Scott. I think the last time we got ix-nayed they were telling me, "Oh, we don't give a shit. We don't care." But they do. And I do.

What was it like performing for Madonna two years ago at the induction ceremony?
That was a tough sell with the brothers. More Ron. Ron was like, "What?" I was like, "Listen man, look, if nothing else, 15 percent of the people who see that performance are going to think we got inducted." 'Cause they don't really follow music. Sure enough, on the plane on the way home, one of the stewardesses congratulated me. But mainly I thought it was a chance to play in case we didn't get in ourselves. It also occurred to me that it was a chance to show some of the people that do that thing that we don't have horns. We're not going to bite you.

It's strange to visualize you guys wearing tuxedos and being applauded by the entire industry.
Do they wear tuxedos?

Some people do.
I don't think that's going to happen. I've got one. I can probably drag it out. I've got these things. I'm at the time of life where people sort of kick my up by the collar and exhibit me on various occasions. And when they do they have to give me clothes and then I keep the clothes. So I have a very nice Dior tux.

Don't even know if there is a beef, Alice Cooper in their beginning, was in Rollin' Stone magazine & through out their fame, I'm talking about the group, not Vince Furnier, if he does get inducted, then the rest of the members who grew up & made that band happen should be there too, they all worked hard to make that group successful.
Another group from the late 60's/early 70's that never got inducted was Grand Funk, & at one time they were the biggest group around in Rock, in fact they broke the record that The Beatles had for selling out Shea Stadium in the early 70's, The MC5 never got inducted, I don't know if Bob Seger or Ted Nugent ever made it either, their all from Detroit, that was happening when The Stooges were starting out.

Nugent should be in there but he does not fit the left-leaning diversity-friendly to all except those who don't tow that line crowd that runs the RRHF.

Tens of millions of albums sold and one of the top touring acts for nearly a decade, with emphasis on crunchy guitar leads and high flying stage antics.

Double Live Gonzo alone sold several million copies.

And the Nugent sound is tough to replicate - very underrated guitarist. The guy could flat out rip it.

...and I'm not a big Nugent fan - but give props where they are due. The guy is a Hall of Famer...

Plus he's been around since the psychedelic 60's when his group "The Amboy Dukes" had their hit "Journey To The Centre of your Mind" & "Baby, Please Don't Go" which had really great guitar, even if he added Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun" guitar parts.
