Yes Joey, a HUGE oversight on my part (Lennon, that is). I don't think anyone who was touched by his work has completely gotten over the trauma of that night.

Quintessential DeVille, EG! I saw him play when he was just a kid. One of many we've lost this year.

Pdog, ,
if that was my first exposure to Jagger, possibly yes... first impressions are huge, and after hearing his work, yes, i like some of it, but i've never been moved by it, like most have.]

My mom loves Elvis, loves the man - that's the root of my own rock and roll passion...
she still gets teary-eyed when she hears a song, sees his face on a magazine etc...
She saw him at the Houston Coliseum in 56, 57..something like that and again at the Astrodome in the mid-70s.
And i grew up with those movies on snowy, local syndicated channels at night....and they were just fun.
you can't judge them academically...like Springsteen said once:
'There's nothing like one of those early Elvis movies'
they were like holiday movies...

I greatly envy your mom having seen the man.  His Astrodome show was supposedly one of his best.

Here, in Texas and througout the South, it was not uncommon for people like Elvis and Hank Williams to go on these 'hayride' tours, which were basically small-town rodeo-type appearances....before fame....
I don't know his itinery timeline, but it makes sense - you can go to flea market or antique store down here and you'll see an old poster with his name below a headliner name..

I share your envy. He actually played 6 shows there over 3 nights (Feb 27-March 1 1970) to something like close to a quarter of a million people. Very unusual for Elvis as he normally didn't play stadium sized venues. He'd just returned to live performances the previous summer and had just completed his second Las Vegas season. I think these shows were part of a 'fair' and were something of a trial run for him going back on the road, which he eventually did 6 months later.

I know Parmeda saw him in Chicago in 1977 and thought he was excellent even though it was near the end. Whilst he undoubtedly had nights where he should have been in a hospital bed instead of a stage, several of the shows from that final year, contrary to common perception, were actually pretty good.

spot on, Gazza--his vocal talents never left him...I'm sure you've seen the '77 CBS special?  Very good stuff--if you can get by how he looks like shit.  The out-takes therefrom are a little scary, though!

Yep..they were on a torrent site a while back. A DVD called 'The CBS Tapes'. Presume thats the one you have. The Tv special plus the two full length shows that were edited together for the broadcast. One show where he's pretty good (Rapid City - most of 'Elvis in Concert' comes from this show) and the other, just two days earlier, where he's pretty shaky - from Omaha, naturally! Cheesy

That seemed to be the way things were that time. One night he could be excellent, and the next barely functional.

They shot the man four TIMES in the back right outside his apartment building .
