U2 to headline Glastonbury fest

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LONDON - Organizers say U2 will headline Glastonbury, Britain's leading summer music festival.

Festival boss Michael Eavis said Monday that the Irish rockers will play the festival's main stage June 25. It will be U2's first appearance at the event, and comes as Glastonbury celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Eavis said he was delighted to have "the biggest band in the world" in the lineup and promised "more surprises in the pipeline."

Glastonbury was founded in 1970 and is held on Eavis' farm in southwest England. It is famous for its eclectic lineup - and the mud that overwhelms the site in rainy years.

Tickets for the festival have been sold out even though much of the lineup has yet to be announced. The festival runs June 23 to 27.

I just read a book "U2 By U2" it's their history as told by the members, I wanted to find out what kind of a musical background they came from, like did they play in bars for years before they made it big, & to my surprise, they never did that, in fact they were so bad covering other bands/artist's material, they started to write their own, the Bassist & drummer were in the beginning were never on the same time beat, out of phase, but they improved when they did their own material.
I have heard them do covers & they were not very good, I heard 'all Along The Watchtower" expected a Hendrix lead from the Edge, & all he played was chords, but I do like them, my favorite of their's is "The Unforgetable Fire" "Bad" & of course "Pride"
That book is a great book, explains how they came up with their recordings in the studio, got their recording contract, their manager, & instead of them being into booze & drugs, 3 of them are Christian (the Bassist being the one who never got into that)

Yeah we talked about Glastonbury a few months back and The Stones were rumored to be the headliners so I was going to try to go but it sold out before they announced any of the bands. And Gazza predicted the Stones would most likely NOT be on the bill so as usual Gazza is correct!

Glastonbury is a five day festival.
So far they've only announced one day's headliner.

Not saying the Stones will be playing there, but the possibility remains...

Bit early to assume that as the Stones havent confirmed they won't be playing it and the bill isn't anywhere close to being confirmed.

I just think its unlikely for three reasons - late June seems pretty early for the Stones to be on tour anywhere, I'd be surprised if BOTH U2 and the Stones would want to be on a festival bill where they're merely co-headliners and would be seen as having at best merely equal 'status' to another act and, perhaps most significantly, whilst for me the Stones are a far better band, I think they'd be reluctant to play such a high profile gig in front of a big TV audience while they're not 'road tested' - and risk comparison with a well-rehearsed band who would have been on the road for about 14 months by that stage.

I DO think they'll play Glastonbury eventually however.  Maybe 2011. I'd just be very surprised if they take the risk of playing there next summer before their tour starts in earnest.

If they are announced, it'll still be possible to get tickets. Whilst the event goes on sale before any act is confirmed and sells out very quickly, there's always more tickets held over for sale around March or so, after the bill is confirmed. I think Bruce only confirmed his appearance there this year around March/April.

Glastonbury was the only one of the 5 gigs that Springsteen played in the UK and Ireland last year that I missed. Whilst it looked good on TV, I wouldn't have gone anywhere near it had I been offered a ticket for free. Much less hassle from the comfort of my armchair. Similarly, I'd have absolutely zero interest in seeing the Stones play there.

Those Stones rumors persist...

www.abs-cbnnews.com/entertainment/11/30/09/muse-set-glastonbury

The admin of the eFestivals site mentioned in that article quotes a "Stones source" and says that the 2010 Tour is strongly rumored to be starting in Europe in late Spring.

Sounds very early indeed, means no new album too most likely, unless they pull of a B&B, but at least that would break the USA->Europe routine they've had since...69 ?

Late Spring??? That's 6 1/2 months from now... I say it's too late for that sort of thing...more like expect an announcement in May for the fall or something similar to 2005 etc...

Besides...isn't Ronnie looking  to do May /June w/ the Faces...that is if he is able to get insured and all?!?

Sounds like a bit of a bizarre time frame. Espicially since it seemed like the rumours of a  South American start were getting stronger. Now Europe in the spring?.....If nothing else, sounds like the Stones hype machine is gearing up.....

Last I heard was that whilst they were intending to tour in 2010, plans were still tentative and changing all the time and there was nothing concrete about specifically where they'd be playing or what size of shows. Granted, this was a few weeks ago so maybe things have changed since then and there could indeed be a change from the regular tour format we've been used to. If I hear anything thats 'solid', I'll post it here though.

From experience, the Stones should know that touring (especially in Europe) when the World Cup
is on is VERY bad for ticket sales.

Agree with you about South America. Totally impractical in mid-2010 to be playing there. Its winter and its the middle of the football season...and in a World Cup year to boot.  The time to play there is December-March/April.

One interesting thing about those rumors is that the NA tour would still start as previous ones have, in the fall.

If they flip the script and start out in Europe, maybe the plan is to make the tour 2010 inclusive, and not another two year globe trot?

BTW, can the original subject be modified to reflect the Stones content in this thread?

The U2 haters might not know what they're missing... Wink

Yeah, I still think the signs all indicate a US tour in 2010 at the same time that they usually play there.

If they play in Europe in 2010 I can only imagine itd be a short visit with a return leg in 2011

I believe EFestivals was also the initial source for the Summer 2005 Hyde Park rumor.

Are you talking about Live 8?
The Stones were mentioned in many early news stories.

eFestivals did have accurate information regarding the Isle Of Wight appearance in 07.

The site admin posted this info regarding Glastonbury today:
someone is telling me - supposedly from a good source tho I can't verify that or what he tells me - that, at the moment, the Stones haven't agreed to play. Everything is apparently in place, and the stones have said they'll give an answer one way or another soon.

If the Stones are playing, I believe they'll play on the Saturday and not the Sunday, as Eavis has supposedly said that Sunday is "a young person's band".

Not Live 8 which was also rumored but a regular show on a weekend around the time tour itself eventually opened.

Thanks for the voice of reason, G.

Based on previous history, It's hard to see them switch up the routine of touring the US in the late summer/fall and maybe Europe the spring/summer after. I could see them releasing the Deluxe Exile in the summer to run up to the prime buying season in the fall, which is plain business sense. I have a purely personal speculation that they'd stick to the stadium extravaganza because it's handy to hide some of their shortcomings  behind pyro and lights and huge video screens, all the while presenting themselves as still the biggest draw around. As Roger Daltrey said about The Who's plans recently, and I'm paraphrasing here, "we plan on touring next year, but at our age, everything can change".

Dec 3: Stones tour 2010 and Glastonbury rumours
Rumours are telling the Rolling Stones are planning a new world tour starting in Europe next year. The legendary UK festival Glastonbury might be one of the highlights next summer, before they move on to America and the rest of the world.

No chance.  Jagger, ex economics student, won't tour @ $240 a pop during a Recession. Even he knows that 2010 will see the worst economic downturn in living memory followed swiftly by an economic Depression.  As for that pathetic festival down in Glassonbury for demented tree huggers and bed wetters...he also is bright enough to not perform there.  That audience won't remember what happened let alone buy Stones LPs plus the BBC will insist upon sending the concert out FTA and we WILL record it!!!  Despite feeling certain that 2010 will not see the return of The Greatest Show On Earth lets hope that when it happens it will not have a silly name like ABB but one to coincide with a new LP...THE GLORIOUS RETURN OF MICK TAYLOR.   (NRC No Ronnie Content).
