Steven still with Aerosmith...

Rumors of Aerosmith’s impending demise came to a quick and sudden halt last night when Steven Tyler made a surprise appearance at the Joe Perry Project’s concert at New York’s Fillmore at Irving Plaza to announce to the fans that he was not quitting Aerosmith despite previous reports. “I just want New York to know, I am not leaving Aerosmith,” Tyler said to a relieved crowd. “Joe Perry, you are a man of many colors. But I, motherfucker, am the rainbow!” After Tyler’s revelation, the Joe Perry Project launched into “Walk This Way” with Tyler on lead vocals.

Tyler’s announcement comes just days after Perry and other Aerosmith members said they would recruit a new lead singer. The band turmoil began when Tyler told a reporter he was going to work on “Brand Tyler” following a November 1st concert in Abu Dhabi. While fans worried this meant the end of Aerosmith, Perry insisted that the group would not break up despite Tyler leaving the group. “Aerosmith is positively looking for a new singer to work with. You just can’t take 40 years of experience and throw it in the bin,” Perry tweeted just two days ago, RS reported. Any auditions for a new singer, however, were probably called off after Tyler’s surprise appearance last night....

As much as I'm sure they could use the publicity I can't imagine now being the time for that as I doubt they have any projects on the horizon.  The way their recent albums constantly get pushed back (including the one they were said to have been working on before the tour) its clear that this band doesn't have the work ethic to get an album on the shelves probably any time in the next year - and that's if they started tomorrow, which I'm sure they won't.  And if the purpose of this was to build publicity for their solo careers then you'd think they would've kept it going a little longer than a couple days.

For all the crapping on them I've done in this thread though, I will say that I think they're a damn good band and would love to see them put out just 1 more quality album

According to TMZ, Tyler showed up and sang at Perry's solo show.  Now both are denying breakup rumors.

I'm glad they kissed and made up! When bands break up, they ususally never make it as soloists. Now on with the show!

Exclusive: Joe Perry: Aerosmith’s Problems Far From Over

When Steven Tyler joined Joe Perry onstage last night in New York to sing “Walk This Way” – and announced he wasn’t quitting Aerosmith – it seemed like the troubled group’s problems might be over. But Rolling Stone has learned that things are far from settled within the band, as part of reporting for a story that will appear in our next issue.

The cameo, says Perry, came as a surprise even to him. “There was all this commotion during our encore break and somebody said, ‘Steven is here.’ ” Perry says. “And I was like, ‘What?’ ” After exchanging pleasantries, Tyler asked to sit in with the group on the final encore of “Walk This Way.” “Being an acquaintance of 40 years, I said, ‘Why not?’ ” Perry says. ” So he came up and sang and that was the last I saw of him.”

Despite Tyler’s onstage insistence that he isn’t quitting the band, Perry says Aerosmith is still considering touring and recording with a new singer. “He wants to take two years off from the band,” Perry says. “The rest of the band wants to keep on working. We have so many different options to fill up that time. Anything is possible at this point. Basically, any communication that we’ve had over the last couple of months has been through managers, so that’s been pretty strange.”

Perry adds, “I never won any money trying to second-guess what goes on in Steven’s mind. I guess this is just Aerosmith business as usual.”

I agree. I've seen them live four times and they have always been incredible. Love Aerosmith.

Saw them once in '01.  It was a great show and I'd love to see them again - would've caught them again this summer had their tour made it to Jersey.

It's just too bad they can't seem to keep their shit together these past couple years.  The band's playing chops haven't depreciated nearly as much as some other bands in their age range I could think of.  And while Tyler's vocals are undoubtably slipping a little with age, his range was still pretty amazing as of their last studio record.  If they'd just get off their pop/sellout kick and focus on their strengths as a rock band, they could turn out something pretty great.

Mick Jagger Replaces Steven Tyler from Aerosmith

Written by P.M. Wortham
Story written: 11 November 2009

The music industry was turned on its ear, or perhaps better stated, its lips yesterday, following the shocking announcement of Mick Jagger as the touring replacement for Steven Tyler from Aerosmith.

Music industry icons from their respective home countries and with their own bands, both Jagger from the Rolling Stones and Tyler from Aerosmith have been blessed with hard core if not retirement-aged fan bases, and are still touring to huge crowds. The move has music industry insiders wondering if Jagger was preparing to walk away from the Stones as well, this event providing the opportunity to do so. "It seems like there's more to the story here", says Aerosmith promoter, Barry Zonisface. "Once Steven called it quits, we expected the search for a new front man to be long and hard". "Like my Johnson", Zonisface added.

...
The lips are changing, and so is the Aerosmith sound

The lead singer change may be an easier transition than many expect. Jagger is just, if not more charismatic on stage than Tyler, and Mick is famous for learning new lyrics quickly. Insiders from Aerosmith's recording studio might argue with that perspective however. Recording engineer Randy Pantalode tells reporters, "Mick does well with most tunes, but couldn't get past the lyrics to Walk This Way. He got stuck on the words, hey diddle diddle with your kitty in the middle of the swing like you didn't care. We think his lips got in the way".

Jagger's moves on stage are legendary and fans are looking forward to seeing the Funky Chicken performed during a new rendition of "Love in an Elevator". Though there were also reports of a name change for the band, Zonisface dismissed that speculation, but admitted that legal and copyright considerations might force the issue. "If we need to make a name change, we're ready to market either Jagosmith or AeroStones. Mick wanted us to go with Mick Smith, but everyone agreed, except Mick, that the name sucked", says Zonisface.

The new Jagger/Aerosmith world tour begins in Pocatello, Idaho, 2010
