Sorry I didn’t report in until now. I’m still on complete sensory overload from last night. Aretha with Lenny Kravitz, Metallica with Lou Reed, Ray Davies and Ozzy….whew!

Jeff Beak absolutely stole the show. He was fantastic. When he began the intro to “People Get Ready” I was hoping to see Rod Stewart come out, but it was Sting…who I almost didn’t recognize. Buddy Guy was killer and so was Billy Gibbons, but the stunning highlight was Jeff doing “Day In The Life”. One guy with a guitar mesmerizing the entire arena. Beautiful.

Oh, and Bono is possibly NOT a twat. He was like a gracious host last night during the U2 set enthusiastically sharing the stage with the Black Eyed Peas and that other guy.  Wink

When Edge and Fergie began the intro to “Gimme Shelter”, my heart stopped. Seeing Mick take the stage was so, so, so wonderful. He looked and sounded great. The duet with Bono on one of the U2 songs I happen to really like (Stuck In A Moment) was a pleasant surprise.  He’s Mick Freaking Jagger and his part of the show was over sooooo fast.

We really need a tour.

Nice vids.
Thanks, Bitch!

Hope that's the first version of 'Because The Night'.
Patti jumps in waaay too soon.

Mick looked and sounded road ready.
Would've liked to see him do another Stones song - or two.

Ozzy, Lou Reed and Ray Davies each got to do two of their songs with Metallica.

Thanks everyone for sharing pics and videos. From what I am sensing Jeff Beck has reclaimed his spot as a guitar god from his recent obscurity. Can't wait for the HBO show and some recordings soon hopefully.

I actually liked "Stuck" better. Not too sure about the exotic embellishment of GS. And Fergie sucks. But, as always, Mick was good tonight.

Great clips! It's pretty weird to hear Mick singing stuck in a moment and cool to see U2 and Mick performing together!
really?

I think all Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Charlie look a lot healtier.. from what I have seen lately.. I think we can expect new album? Perhaps tour next autumn?  Blank Frigging Stare

I have mixed emotions.

GREAT to see Mick looking so good and sounding so strong; but Gimme Shelter is my FAVORITE Stones Song and I am SO LONGING to see MY Band that this performance........I dunno. I don't like the strings or whatever I'm hearing. I must say that Bono did appear to be humbled (is that possible?) and The Edge's guitar did us proud.  I like Fergie and think she rocked!

The Garden appeared to erupt when Mick took that stage!!!!!!!!! He IS THE MASTER!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it's been 2 years since we've seen him perform. I've missed him.

Agree with all who have said that the "boys" have all appeared recently and look healthy. So let's get on with it. We need a Tour and we need it SOON!!!!

Very happy for Bitch and SV. Thanks to SV for taking the time to text me. It meant alot my friend. Wink

I can see where you're coming from. Its my favourite Stones song too. I thought U2 did an OK job of it (theres a clip of them playing it at a soundcheck before one of the their recent shows on YouTube, obviously with last nights gig in mind, and its pretty decent)- but hey, someone has to keep these great songs alive. The Stones have hardly played it much for years. Its up to THEM to make the most of the time they have left to entertain us. U2 just have a very different sound. Christ, I've even seen Meatloaf perform Gimme Shelter live several years ago. Now THAT was frightening!

Mick looked and (based on those clips) sounded really good, especially considering he was playing with performers he's never played with before and the fact that it was his first live performance in two years. Charlie's sounded as good as he usually is when he's played recently. Ronnie played last week and its hard to tell what he played like as I've only seen a so-so quality You Tube clip of what was a brief performance so its a bit premature to assume he's in roadworthy condition. Keith ? Well, those photos of him at the Scream Awards showed a man looking healthier than he has done for many years - but we havent heard him play and he hasnt exactly been busy.

They're far from ready to go on the road, but hopefully the fact that three of them have been performing in the last two weeks will whet their appetites a bit more.

Jagger performing is spine jarring at anytime, with anyone.  Just goes to show the impact he has on a crowd.  By all accounts, the engine room is in it's first stages of reawakening.

While we're on the subject and not that I'm a conspiracy theorist or paranoid or anything, does anyone find it a bit strange that Mick appears to have done NOTHING at all since August 2007 apart from attend a few movie premieres?

I know in recent years, when theres a long period off between tours, Charlie tends to either play a bit of jazz/boogie woogie and otherwise do very little, Ronnie tends to guest with whoever wants to hang out with him and make a solo record and Keith has tended to do next to nothing (whereas in the past he tried to stay reasonably active).

Mick, however, has always appeared to be more creatively driven. Usually at some points between Stones activity, he can be counted on to make a solo record and do some film production (the latter has been a major interest in the last decade or so). However, in the last two years hes done nothing at all, which is VERY unlike him. Not a solo project, not a single guest appearance at a concert until last night, no movie work. Nothing.

Very unlike him. Makes me wonder if there's been significant things going on in his personal life in the last two years that havent been publicised.

Anyway, the main thing is that he's back performing again, which is always good news.

Music Review
Rock’s Royal Genes, in Endless Recombinations

By Jon Pareles
Published: October 30, 2009

...

Performers at Thursday's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame benefit concert included John Fogerty, left, who joined Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band onstage to play tunes by Creedence Clearwater Revival and Roy Orbison

History lesson, star showcase, oldies singalong, canonization and romp — on Thursday night, the first of two Madison Square Garden celebrations and benefits for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was all of those.

The headliners were Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Crosby, Stills and Nash, and a dozen of their fellow members of the hall, along with some aspirants, joined them onstage to share songs, trace connections, offer praise and spark one another. The nearly six-hour concert was to be edited into an HBO program to be shown on Nov. 29.

Yet even with cameras rolling, most of the performers stayed loose, whooping it up as they played unexpected songs in combinations that might never happen again.

The two concerts — a Friday show featured U2, Aretha Franklin and Metallica — were billed as the hall’s 25th anniversary, although the foundation behind the hall was incorporated in 1983, and its first musicians weren’t inducted until 1986. (One of them, Jerry Lee Lewis, led off Thursday’s show with a two-fisted “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On.”) The museum in Cleveland opened in 1995. The “25th anniversary” tag anticipates the 25th induction ceremony in March. If the hall were a musician, it could now be inducted into itself, since to ensure historical perspective, its founding rule is that nominees must have started their recording careers a quarter-century earlier. Decades can take a toll on voices and lives, but Thursday’s performers were still vital.

To sort out rock’s past — a fertile tangle of cultures, races, classes, artistic ambitions and business imperatives — the hall traces lineages and influences. It’s a workable approach, and as pedagogy it can help lead curious fans back through generations. Yet the correlations — Hall of Famer equals Ancestors A plus B plus C — never tell the whole story. Great musicians listen widely, but then they twist, misconstrue, recombine ideas and mirror their own instincts in what they learn from their chosen mentors.

Mr. Springsteen, a Hall of Fame mainstay who happily credits his sources, was presented as a successor to the agitprop of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan, as well as a disciple of Roy Orbison, Phil Spector, Elvis Presley and the soul of Sam and Dave.

That’s a passable summation, but still incomplete, leaving out the facet of Mr. Springsteen that comes up with New Jersey romantic epics like “Jungleland” and “Badlands,” two centerpieces of his set.

Mr. Springsteen showed his agitprop side by having Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine — playing a guitar with “Arm the Homeless” written on it — join him for “The Ghost of Tom Joad” and the Clash’s “London Calling.” And when Mr. Springsteen shared the E Street Band with John Fogerty, their first song together was “Fortunate Son,” Creedence Clearwater Revival’s blast at the uneven burdens of war. But Mr. Fogerty and Mr. Springsteen also sang a duet on Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman.”

For his Spector side, Mr. Springsteen brought on Darlene Love, a Spector frontwoman who’s nominated for the hall this year — he lobbied fervently — and can still belt “Da Doo Ron Ron.” Sam Moore, of Sam and Dave, unleashed his high tenor for “Hold On, I’m Comin’ ” and “Soul Man.” After Mr. Springsteen declared that continental drift had pried apart Long Island and New Jersey, Billy Joel arrived, trading verses with Mr. Springsteen on Mr. Joel’s songs and doing a dead-on Springsteen impression during “Born to Run.”

In an irrepressible set, Mr. Wonder played the night’s Dylan song — “Blowin’ in the Wind” — and a Michael Jackson tribute, “The Way You Make Me Feel,” pushing it back toward a 1960s Motown beat. In the concert’s blues moment, B. B. King performed “The Thrill Is Gone” with wiry elegance; Smokey Robinson sang his own “Tracks of My Tears,” amplifying its heartbreak.

Pecking sly syncopations from his Clavinet and puffing zigzag harmonica solos in his own songs, Mr. Wonder also brought on admirers: John Legend, who overreached in his attempt at Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy, Mercy Me (the Ecology)”; Sting, digging into the bass line of “Higher Ground” before stepping forward for his own “Roxanne”; and Jeff Beck, who made his guitar snarl, cackle and wail during “Superstition.”

Mr. Simon’s set included the latest Simon & Garfunkel reunion, with “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” transposed down to help Mr. Garfunkel’s weathered voice reach the high notes, and “The Sounds of Silence,” segueing from its pristine acoustic-guitar version to the folk-rock hit.

Mr. Simon’s guests were doo-woppers: Little Anthony and the Imperials, harmonizing a cappella in “Two People in the World,” and Dion DiMucci of Dion and the Belmonts, his voice still swaggering in “The Wanderer.”

Mr. Simon sang a wistful version of George Harrison’s “Here Comes the Sun” with David Crosby and Graham Nash. But none of those guests accounted for the African and Caribbean rhythms and jump-cutting imagery of songs from Mr. Simon’s solo years, like “You Can Call Me Al,” with Mr. Simon confidently cuing a full-arena singalong.

Crosby, Stills and Nash don’t harmonize as neatly as they did in the 1960s and ’70s, so Stephen Stills compensated with aggressive, bluesy guitar solos. The trio countrified its old songs and brought friends — Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt — in a lineup recalling another rock anniversary: the 1979 No Nukes concert. (Mr. Springsteen performed at it, too.) On Thursday Ms. Raitt sang “Love Has No Pride” with glowing tenderness, then applied her slide guitar to the Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider.”

The concert strove to touch, if only briefly, every rock influence from boogie-woogie to pop to power chords, winding up with Mr. Springsteen’s troupe performing the gospel-rooted “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher.” Luckily, the night didn’t belong to schools or categories, but to endless hybrids and raucous, upraised voices.

Thank you, Sweet VA for the review.  Thank you, Soldatti for GS link.

I, of course, loved seeing MJ.   U2 were alright.  I don't care for Fergie of the BEPs.

I'll be seeing Bruce this Mon. 11/2/09.

Well if their is something going on in his personal life. Then he has done a great job of keeping it quiet. Their has'nt been a whiff of a rumour that I've heard of and with the British tabs it would'nt take much for them to get rolling on a rumour. Maybe it's just that their is no commercial interest in any Jagger projects that don't include the Rolling Stones. Maybe they're all just getting bored with being at home and are ready to get it going again. The (steel) wheels of the Rolling Stones machine are very slowly starting to turn again.

About the concert last night! OK here's my review and comments. As most of you know, I am a concert junkie so this show was like a smorgasboard of music and yes, it was orgasmic. I'm writing this with my wet fingers, hahaha,,,hey now, if Joey can type with his penis... ok all joking aside...Even though it was a R&R Hall of fame show, I have no idea who was inducted this year, nobody mentioned them, In the beginning of the show Tom Hanks gave a little speech but it was really loud inside MSG. The crowd was PUMPED UP! Yeah JERRY LEE LEWIS was slightly boring (dude is ancient) ARETHA's voice was loud and proud (and fat) and LENNY KRAVITZ (studly) and ANNIE LENNOX (is she a dyke?) didnt fit in too good with Aretha but OK, they tried to mix it up. BUDDY GUY's still going strong. JEFF BECK was mesmerizing, he put me in such a trance I didnt take any videos of him, I was just glued to my seat in amazement. He was in TOP FORM and he was playing his heart out. Impressive and he looked better than ever, his body rocks as much as his guitar playing. STING was a surprise, his voice was perfect, he carries a mean tune, great timing and perfect pitch full of emotion. Loved Sting! METALLICA kicks serious rock and roll ass ~ they are tight as a drum, really in sync with each other and the tunes were powerplayed and loud as hell. RAY DAVIES and LOU REED kept up with and stood out from Metallica's style making it their own. LOVED RAY & LOU! Dudes are relevant! OZZY OSBORNE (crazy ass mf) got the crowd going, he's so wild it's contageous! Loved OZZY's energy! BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN was another surprise, I didnt think he was playing both nights but he seriously loves to Rock and Roll and loving what he does shows, he is well loved by the NY crowd (homeboy). PATTY SMITH is one of my faves, she used to play the local NY club scene for years and had a cult following, but honestly, her timing sucked. Even the second try she blew it. Maybe she was nervous, but not at the professional level of mostly everyone else there. I still love her tho.  Of course I love U2 alot, always excited to hear them and see what they've got to show and prove to the world. Yeah they enjoy showing off and know they are hot pieces of ass but even BONO didnt try to outstage MICK, perhaps he knows he cant do it, so he showed respect for MICK. Righteous. When BLACK EYE PEAS came out with MICK onstage, that was a triple whammy. FERGIE looked hot in those fabulous boots and leather mini, and I think MICK & BONO were competing to get her attention! She was cool, did her stage thing, I think she sang 'it's just a shout away' instead of 'a shot away' and Lisa Fischer's vocals kicks Fergies to the curb but she put out a solid performance, and she played with the big boys without batting an eyelash, she has what it takes. Go FERGIE! When MICK came on stage, my heart was pounding, I was so excited! I LOVE MICK MORE THAN EVER! I wanted him to out-sing and out-perform everyone else, and MICK never disappoints, he sure was a crowd pleaser. Everyone was cheering, most people were in shock to see him! I liked Stuck in a Moment, it's a cool song, they did it well. It was a fantastic orgasmic night of music, so cool to see so many of my favorite musicians on the same night. I hope they continue this tradition of opening the R&R HOF to the public. Other years it was always at the Waldorf Astoria and $15,000 or invitation only. This was a much better idea. LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL! And THANKS TO GAZZA for the scoop about MICK's special appearance ~ GAZZA and ROCKS OFF RULES! FVCK YOU GAZZA AND EVERYONE ELSE! SV and I took a pic giving you all the finger so I'm not sure if she wants to post it, but we mean it, in a good way, of course!

Music, to me, is the joy, right? I love my kids most of the time, and I love my wife most of the time. Music I love all the time. It's the only constant thing in my life. It's the one thing you can count on. :Keith Richards 1993

Trader's Little Helper for the rest.

Incredible Night of music. Had an "limited view" seat that was more like no view at all! To add insult to injury the section also had no sound! Recorded Tom Hanks and Jerry Lee Lewis from there and relized it wasn't going to be very good. Quickly relocated myself to one of the expensive seats and luckily it's rightful owner never showed up.

As such the sound on the first two track isn't the best, but included for the sake of completeness. Other issues include a talkative crowd during CSN (guess they weren't fans); also had an equipment issue near the end of Simon & Garfunkel's set. Didn't miss any music but the recoding levels did peak a bit on "Cecelia" Did my best to even things out in
Audacity, but it's still a little uneven.

Other than those issues this is a excellent recording of a great night!

Enjoy!

Note: The dotted lines represent fade outs, which were made with Audacity at the set changes. I have no suggestions for disc splits.
