THE artist who designed the iconic Rolling Stones tongue and lips logo came to exhibit his work in an Esher art gallery last weekend.

John Pasche’s artwork was displayed in a special evening exhibition at Esher Fine Art in the town centre.

Pasche designed the tongue and lips logo in 1971 for the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album.

More than 130 guests went to the gallery to meet Pasche and hear his story of how he came to create artwork for the Stones.

Jacqueline Chapman, director at the gallery, said: “Pasche’s recent release of a series of limited editions of the Rolling Stones European and American tour posters has been met with great enthusiasm by the public and collectors alike.

“The posters, on sale at Esher Fine Art and other galleries, are being snapped up.

“John’s original artwork for the lips and tongue logo was eventually sold to the V&A last year via New York for $96,000 (approximately £60,000).

“The only other original version of the logo has been on display at Esher Fine Art where the morning’s first task is to clear the windows of the marks of fingers, noses and faces pressed against the glass to get a better look at the artwork and the posters.”

At the exhibition, Pasche described how the design, based on Mick Jagger’s mouth, was created to represent the band’s anti-authoritarian attitude.

It has gone on to become one of the world’s most recognisable logos of the 20th Century and in August last year it was voted the greatest band logo of all time in an online poll.
