"Don't hate my father," Mackenzie Phillips tells PEOPLE.

But in a tell-all book out Wednesday, the former childhood actress reveals that her dad, musician John Phillips of the '60s band the Mamas and the Papas, engaged with her in a long-term incestuous relationship.

Phillips, 49, who has survived drug addiction, arrests and divorce, writes in the book High on Arrival that she was already a star playing a boy-crazy teen on the TV sitcom One Day at a Time when her father had sex with her on the night before she was to marry Jeff Sessler, a member of the Rolling Stones entourage, in 1979.

"On the eve of my wedding, my father showed up, determined to stop it," writes Phillips, who was 19 and a heavy drug user at the time. "I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad's bed."

Blackout
"My father was not a man with boundaries. He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father.

"Had this happened before? I didn't know. All I can say is it was the first time I was aware of it. For a moment I was in my body, in that horrible truth, and then I slid back into a blackout."

Phillips' life began to spiral out of control. In 1980, she was fired from One Day at a Time because of her constant drug use. That same year, she went to rehab – with her father. She even toured with him in a band called the New Mamas and the Papas. Her sexual relationship with him had become consensual.

Delusional
"I was a fragment of a person, and my secret isolated me," she writes.

"One night Dad said, 'We could just run away to a country where no one would look down on us. There are countries where this is an accepted practice. Maybe Fiji.'

"He was completely delusional. No, I thought, we're going to hell for this."

Florida used to have signs on the side of the highway as you drove down I-95 that said "Arrive Alive," which I had seen often altered to read "Arrive Stoned" on bumper stickers and mock license plates in gift shops and such.  I guess I'm betraying my age here.  This was in the early 80s.

I read John Philips book years ago "Papa John" I think it was called, he was a real screwed up drug addict, when they used to shoot up drugs there was blood on the walls, I don't know how this happened because I was never into that, a part of the book is when him & Keith was shooting up, he (John) was making a solo album & him & Keith were so out of it, it took them hours to tune up, they went into a bathroom & didn't come out for hours, nothing became of the solo album though.
He (John) was on a T.V. special that his former Mama & papas member Denny was doing, he was so out of it he kept saying "Where's Keith"? or something to that extent, there's a film of this on "Straight Shooter" movie on the M & P's.

The album eventually got a release in spring 2001 under the title "Pay Pack and Follow". Phillips didnt live to see its release though as he died a month earlier.

Good album too. Jagger, Richards, Taylor and Wood all appear on it.

Just because someone has a talent that you appreciate, it does not make him/her incapable of deplorable acts.

I m not a Mama’s and Papas fan, so perhaps that is why I can see beyond the supposed talented singer/songwriter and confront what could very well be the truth.

I understand what she is saying, b/c I too experienced drug addiction and incest in my life... I wasn't ashamed of the sexual experience, I was ashamed b/c I enjoyed it after I it became routine and often and then, later, when I knew better I didn't do anything about it or stop it!!!
People who get to hear that message right now, who are in the grips of that shit right now or have lived with it in silence for a long time, may be helped. This has nothing to do with her Dad... He was a sick man too, like many, he was at one time possibly a victim, and went to the grave with his shame and guilt. She's is carrying a postive message, you just do not see it, take it into account when you approach this topic, much easier to judge others, than discern the truth of ourselves!!!

For what it's worth....Denny Doherty's daughter evidently says it's true. And that many people knew it was happening at the time.

I understand, believe and respect what you are saying about the effects of the various forms of abuse on children.  Nevertheless, just because mackenzie said he did it, and Denny Doherty's daughter said he did it, that does not mean he did it.

In the United States we are presumed innocent untill proven guilty, and are entitled to a fair trial, and to face our accusers face to face in a court room.

I am not saying he did it, or he didnt do it.  All Im saying is maybe it would have been better left in the privacy of the psychiatrists office, or at the Survivors meeting, rather than all over the media, as he is dead, and unable to defend himself.

The truth is, if he did not do it, these are absolutely horrible accusations.

Unfortunately, because there seems to be so much commercial incentive at this time, with the book and appearance on Celebrity Rehab, the profit motive appears to be accompanying the positive message she is trying to convey.  The appearance of profit motive is clouding the issue.

I have never experience incest or abuse of any kind, but have known victims of child abuse (not sexual)..and know how the tables turn on them once they begin to tell the truth about what happened to them. I have a much older cousin who has been a family pariah for my whole life because she claims her father was abusive, but the family, my family shunned her.....she has also battled emotional issues, drug addictions and the family throws that in her face ..
'well, you can't believe anything she says, she's crazy..' etc.
and i always wonder...'but what if she's not lying...'
the family doesn't want to believe it, so she's out....

happens all the time to victims of incest of any abuse.
they live witht the shame, guilt and then the fear of no one, especially family members, not believing them, labeling them liars etc..
but isn't that the natural response for many people?
i would rather not believe that the guy who wrote Monday, Monday could do something like this, but to just completely demonize MP's accusation seems unfair and reactionary to me.

Chynna Phillips said she "completely shut down" when sister Mackenzie Phillips told her about the alleged 10-year incestuous relationship with their father, John Phillips, 13 years ago. But now the singer said she hopes her new album and her sister's book bring some "healing" to the world.


Singer Chynna Phillips opens up about sister McKenzie's shocking news.

"I'm still struggling with it. It's going to be a lifelong journey for me," Chynna Phillips said. "It's a terrible, terrible thing."

Despite stating that she believes her sister, Chynna said she could not vouch for Mackenzie's version of the story in her new book, "High on Arrival."

"I cannot say that everything is just as it is written in the book. Because she admittedly was on drugs. So there's no way for me to be able to corroborate," Chynna said.


Mackenzie Phillips' Sister Believes Incest Story  Stepmom Doubts Phillips' Incest Story

The former star of the '70s sitcom "One Day at a Time" said that she was first raped by her father, the late lead singer of the Mamas and the Papas, in a hotel room when she was 18 while passed out after a drug binge.

Although Chynna has known about the alleged relationship for years, Mackenzie did not tell Chynna about her tell-all book until after "the train had already left the station."

"She came up and she told me that she was going to be -- that the book was basically already written," Chynna said. "And that she was going to be writing about the incestuous relationship between she and my father."


Michelle Phillips, Mackenzie's stepmother and a former member of the band the Mamas and Papas, has publicly rebuked Mackenzie's allegations.

Michelle Phillips told the Hollywood Reporter that Mackenzie had "a lot of mental illness" and that "she's had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 years."

"Mackenzie is jealous of her siblings, who have accomplished a lot and did not become drug addicts," Michelle said.

Chynna acknowledged the family conflict but said she would not participate in it.

"There's a lot of animosity there. A lot of resentment," Phillips said. "Because I've always said that resentment is like drinking a ton of poison and waiting for the other person to die."




Chynna's New Album

Since Mackenzie's public confession on Oprah, counselors have seen a jump in people seeking help for abuse and incest.

Between Sept. 22 and Sept. 24 the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) says its hotline had a 26 percent increase in call volume and their online hotline had an 83 percent spike.

"I hope that my album and her book bring a lot of peace and healing to the world," Phillips added. "That would be a wonderful gift."

Chynna, now a member of the Christian band Chynna and Vaughn, released her new album, "One Reason," the day before her sister's book.


The former Wilson Phillips band member says she loves Christian music because she can combine her faith and her music.

"I get to write prayer to God in my lyrics. And I get to perform in front of people, but it's not performing anymore. It's showing up to worship God and to be able to have other people in the room be there," Phillips said.

Finished the book a couple of days ago and all I can say is she has had a fucked up life. There is one part in the book where she says her dad and Keith left her alone in a house when she was little for a few days while they were out on a binge.

I always have lingering doubts about the veracity of stories like this, especially when there's product to flog.

However, I do think that perhaps a Nobel Peace prize in her future!
