stepfather. no charges were ever made against him.  my cousin was twelve at the time, it was 1965, and none of the adults would do anything with the exception of my parents who took him in to live with us from time to time.

People were more conservative in 1965 then they are now, and seemed to believe a parent, even a stepparent, could use physical discipline. Some of the adults blamed my cousin, some seemed to pretend it wasnt happening. To this day I distrust authority, and have no illusions as to just how bad parents, some parents, can be.

But his stepfather was an ex marine, in his thirties, who plummeled him with full fists and power, punching him straight on in the face, untill he was swollen and bloody. His stepfather would initiate the attacks by calling his real father names or through similar actions.

His PTSD slowly developed over time, with the hallucinations developing in the last year of his life, at age forty.  Im  not sure whether he felt guilty or not, but he had a deep feeling of inadequacy/and needing to 'save' people. Victims of seveere child abuse often develop PTSD.

As I say, I feel sorry for Mackenzie, but child abuse/involving incest is such a horrendous crime accusation, and is so serious, that the accused should face their day in court, not on Oprah.

Then, if convicted, serious penalties should be enforced.  The punishment should fit the crime.

texile, how true that is!  my cousins brother, to this day, denies the abuse in a way, by telling others that his brother 'provoked' the attacks! He saw the attacks, like I did.
Most of the adult family members at the time hid their heads in the sand, and some turned on my abused cousin, the victim of this extreme physical abuse.

Well I have respect for Mackenzie Phillips' bravery, because she has put her story out there for criticism and rejection from society. It is difficult for her, she isnt doing it for the money or to make her father out to be a monster. She repeatedly said she loved her father and thats why she couldnt come out with this story until after he died, she didnt want to embarass him while he was alive. But loving and protecting him was her downfall, now everyone blames her for being a slutty scumbag fvcking her own father and capitalizing on it. I hope her story helps others face this taboo subject because obviously she isnt the only person in the world that had this happen to them. This opens up the dialog.

I think she was younger than 18 with Mick.

Sometimes they run into each other at drug abuse charity events.  She says, "Hey, grandpa - is that a Hohner in your Depends, or do you still remember me?"

uh I think it's safe to say MICK likes them young. I've heard 15, 16 and 13 in different versions of Stray Cat Blues. So any age over 13 is good!  

OK isnt the an old picture of the Stones with young naked girls all around them? Bill comes to mind especially but all of the Stones were there in the pic, it may have been a drawing and not an actual photo. Anyway nothing surprises me when it comes to the Stones and women.

In theory, there seems to be little difference.
However, in reality, mackenzie is making these accusations to a national audience on the OPrah show, while marketing her book, and before appearing on Celebrity Rehab.   I think she should be discussing this with others.  For example, a psychiatrist, a Survivors group, etcetera.
And discussing it within her family. I think her message is a good one that most of us need to hear.   Its just that the timing is bad, and the profit motive is clouding the issue.

Your perspective is wrong... She is not making accusations, she is confessing and admitting to what she did, he was just another particiapant. If you make this clear distinction, you can see how this is really a very good thing, regardless of how you feel about her making  money or getting a certain type of exposure. She is admitting to alot of fucked up she did, and not using her dad as an excuse, she clearly accepts her responsibilty, and says how she knew better. A non addict will not get this, but anyone, who is, may be able to discern, the malady she has and how she used sex and drugs to be her solution for so long. I'm glad she lived to tell this tale, many do not. We are talking a life and death sickness... she has taken great risks, I applaud her... When all is said and done, she has to spend the rest of her life, doing the deal to stay sober and sane, not easy... If I was in her postion, I would like to think I would be brave enough to openly discuss something this horrific... it is the silence of incest, abuse, drugs ect... that keep so many from getting help... and we're lucky, b/c 50 years ago, they didn't have alot of places for people to go to get help, before finding AA or say a group of rape survivors... We are not as evolved as you think...

Theres always more than one way to look at any situation.  More importantly you make sense.  Im going to try and look at the situation with a different perspective.

And, you're right, she does have allot of guts.
