Box O Release of The Rod Stewart Session 1971-1998

Comes out next Tuesday...
...

For the upcoming Rhino collection The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998, producers Andy Zax and Cheryl Pawelsk literally picked their way through a warehouse of the singer’s tapes, unearthing enough material to pack four discs with alternate versions, early takes and other unreleased tracks. Highlights include an early rough take of “Maggie May,” a cover of Bob Dylan’s “This Wheel’s On Fire,” a piano version of “Forever Young” and an acoustic rendition of “The First Cut is The Deepest.”

Another standout track is the 1992 re-recording of “In A Broken Dream,” a song that Stewart originally sang in 1969 as a member of the group Python Lee Jackson and later resurrected for his MTV Unplugged special. Spinner has a stream of the 1992 version of “In a Broken Dream,” and it packs an impressive roster of guests: Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour contributes his trademark sound to the track, while Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones serves as organist. Rounding out the cast are Nick Lowe and Pete Thomas.

Disc 4 Track 12 sounds intriguing!

Nice looking set.

As usual, every major artist in the world who made a record prior to 1980 seems to be able to do a studio archives release - even if they're still making new music - with ONE exception.

I love Rod in fact he´s one of my all-time favorite singers

But how many compilations he will do...I don´t know if he established a record for that  Shit!

Well Warner Bros. is cashing in on the catalog I presume they own when he was with them and then before with Mecury records.
They are releasing either top of next year or maybe this year special editions of Blondes have more fun and I believe Footloose and fancy free.

On amazon and Itunes for loads of his 80s and 90s work there are unreleased, live, and alternative/outtakes from those records sessions.

he released a 4 CD set in 1989? as Storyteller which is stronger material ... then take the Five Guys Walk Into A Bar 4 CD set of da Faces & combine with Storyteller ... you can come up with a vastly improved 4CD Box by using the years to 1969-1995 ... you could even make a point to include some Truth from '67 ... maybe one from '98 ... who will spend $50 for this sheet ... at least we now have the American Songbook Box to await ...  Retarded post

This is the set.  I'm an unashamed Stewart rock fanatic.  What you have here is 63 unreleased tracks.  Many of the all time hits with different lyrics, some with missing guitar & horn parts.  I'd never heard "Think I'll Pack My Bags", which Woody released as Mystifies Me.  On different cuts Rod calls out to other guitarists, as example, during Farewell he says to Martin Q "watch Ronnie Wood!"  Some of tracks are just Stewart on guitar or piano.  Breathes new life into each track.  Sure, the 80's songs sound a bit dated now.  The amount of stellar material here is stunning.  The re-recording of "In A Broken Dream" With David Gilmour on guitar makes one wonder what was Warner Bros thinking to not release this, it is brilliant.  The liner notes explain the origins of every track & session in great detail, as well as hint of future releases.   I've read with Stewart has green lighted & there's enough material to go into '12 with releases.

FG, to summarize, the only similarity to the Faces box set is the packaging.  The Faces set was terrific for it's unheard gems.  I understand there's more to come someday as well. In my eyes, the Stewart set has so many varied takes & cuts left on the recording floor it surpasses the Faces set.  Criss Cross, Storyteller really is a good set.  That set just scratches the surface of the abundance of songs Stewart has recorded.  Back in '89 his management would not let him release a set such as this as it would be seen as looking back on history.  20 years later, this fits right in.  In my eyes, if you have all of Stewarts lp's you do not need Storyteller as you are missing great tracks such as Italian Girls, Dixie Toot, etc.  You do need this set to see the growth of his music & the recording techniques used.  It is terrific.

I go mine on ebay for $35, which was $5 more than the Faces box set.  With the amount of rubbish which is released these days, small amount for max enjoyment.

Thanks for the review, Nelly.   I'll be on the lookout for this box set, which sounds mighty fine.  You rock!

I heard a bunch of the songs from this new compilation yesterday.
The state of the lyrics on most tracks was absurd.

It almost seemed fake. The music was really good though.

Definitely Ron Woods finest effort, in his entire career . . .
