Tyler's in bad shape physically and he cant accept it so he uses drugs to mask it and stop the physical pain. But it didnt work. He's screwed. I dont think he can ever get back to where he was if he needs knee and foot surgery. Its the beginning of several years of therapy, both physical and emotional. He has no choice but to clean up his act and hope for a comeback.

Steven Tyler has made his first public appearance since checking into rehab for drug abuse - at a Palm Desert karaoke contest.

The former Aerosmith rocker made a surprise appearance at the Tilted Kilt pub in California on Tuesday night and even agreed to belt out his 1998 hit I Don't Want To Miss A Thing after cheering on revellers who tried to hit the high notes.

Tyler was accompanied by his publicist and two bodyguards, according to local newspaper The Desert Sun.

Karaoke organizer Mike May tells the publication Tyler was "very gracious and very kind".

He recalls Tyler offered to take the stage when two fans who attempted the Diane Warren-penned Armageddon theme were booed off.

May says, "All of a sudden, near the end of the song, he grabbed the mic and started singing. The whole frickin’ bar surrounded him and he just started singing the whole thing."

"It was, like, one of those moments - a (karaoke) club DJ’s dream come true."

The rocker's chosen rehab has never been disclosed, but reports have suggested he checked into the fabled Betty Ford Clinic in Rancho Mirage, California in mid-December seeking treatment for a dependency on prescription drugs following years of injuries sustained on stage.

Billy Idol linked to Aerosmith role

WENN -- Veteran rocker Billy Idol has become the latest big name rumoured to be in the running to replace Steven Tyler as frontman of Aerosmith.

The band revealed they will be hosting auditions to find a new member while Tyler takes a hiatus, with guitarist Joe Perry insisting the star won't be ready to tour with them until he recovers from a recent stint in rehab and a series of operations.

Lenny Kravitz was the first singer linked to the role, but admitted he would never take over from Tyler, while reports have also suggested former Queen star Paul Rodgers.

Now Idol is rumoured to be in contention, with Classic Rock magazine reporting he was due to meet with the musicians but pulled out after falling sick.

A source tells the publication, "Joe said he wanted to talk to Billy about joining Aerosmith, because the band were having problems with Steven. As far as I know Idol did not show up due to having a cold."

Perry recently admitted they have already talked to a number of singers about replacing Tyler, but refused to divulge any names. He said, "(There's) a few people we've talked to, and we'll see how it goes... As far as auditions go, we'll probably just sit around and have a couple of drinks and see if we get along -- because we're already gonna know that they can sing."

When Aerosmith were announced as headliners for the Download Festival in Donington Park, England, we were scratching our heads. Would Steven Tyler play with the band, or would it be some kooky replacement? Despite the in-fighting, we now have an answer, as NME is reporting that Tyler will "definitely" play with the band. Phew!

Aerosmith plans European shows with Steven Tyler

The ongoing Aerosmith saga has taken another twist, with the veteran rockers apparently putting aside their recent differences and scheduling performances at least two upcoming European gigs.

The band has confirmed two European festival appearances: a June 10 slot at the Sweden Rock Festival in Solvesborg, Sweden, followed by an appearance at the June 11-13 Download Festival in Leicestershire, UK. According to NME.com, Download Festival organizers have confirmed that embattled frontman Steven Tyler will be appearing with the band.
"Swedish audiences are like no other," Tyler said of the Sweden Rock Festival in a press statement. "We're all very excited."

"This is the first show of our European Tour," added guitarist Joe Perry, who had been vocal in his public criticism of his bandmate in recent months, ever since the group was forced to cancel much of its North American tour following Tyler's fall from a stage in South Dakota (and subsequent hospitalization) last August. "We can't wait to uncork our tour here in Sweden and I am sure the cork will hit the ceiling."

In December, the 61-year-old Tyler entered a rehab facility in Massachusetts to fight an addiction to prescription painkillers acquired while fighting off chronic pain from injuries to his feet and knees suffered over the last decade.

The singer said at the time that he would like to rejoin the band after finishing his rehab stint.

"I love Aerosmith; I love performing as the lead singer in Aerosmith," he said. "I am grateful for all of the support and love I am receiving and am committed to getting things taken care of."
