Joe Perry Frustrated Over Steven Tyler Accident

By JOHN CARUCCI Associated Press Writer

Joe Perry is angry that Aerosmith has been sidelined due to Steven Tyler's tour injury.

The group had to cancel their summer tour after the frontman suffered injuries when he fell off the stage during a concert in August.

"The tour was building up to be a great tour, and I was pretty (upset), you know," Perry said in an interview on Wednesday.

The guitarist hasn't even spoken to Tyler recently: "I haven't talked to him in over five weeks. I don't know what's going on with him. I hear he's getting better, but I don't know I really don't know what's going on with him.

The 61-year-old Tyler fell off the stage during an Aug. 5 performance in South Dakota. He broke his left shoulder and needed 20 stitches in his head. Tyler was ordered by doctors to take the time to properly recuperate from his injuries.

"I was pretty (upset), because right before that, he had pulled a muscle in his leg. And we had to take two weeks off and we missed probably seven dates," Perry said.

Even though Aerosmith is idle, Perry has been keeping busy promoting his upcoming album, "Have Guitar, Will Travel." It's the fifth record for his solo endeavor, The Joe Perry Project. Although the CD was already in the works, he put his full focus on it after Tyler was injured. It is out Oct. 6.

"The bottom line is that every hole that Aerosmith left I filled," he said of the CD.

Aerosmith has been together since the early 1970s, and Perry believes they'll be back in action again: "One thing I do know, there's still life left in the old band."

Still, Perry couldn't hide his feelings regarding Tyler.

"All I know is he's got to get his act together. I mean, he and I haven't written a song together alone in the same room in over ten years, so there's been some changes in paradigm of what Aerosmith is," he said.

A representative for Aerosmith did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I know they played Astro Skate in Tarpon Springs in the early 80's.  I guess they were touring roller skating rinks back then.

Joe Perry denies Aerosmith breakup rumors

By Jed Gottlieb
Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Aerosmith over? Dream on.

The globetrotting Boston bad boys are scheduled to be back in the saddle Oct. 18 and 20 in Maui, Hawaii, and on Nov. 1 at a Formula One race event in Abu Dhabi.

Last week, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry fueled speculation of a breakup after telling The Associated Press of his frustrations with singer Steven Tyler, who forced the band to cancel summer tour dates after injuring himself in a fall from the stage on Aug. 5 in Sturgis, S.D.

Yesterday Perry said that while it is true he and Tyler haven’t spoken in weeks, rumors of the band’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

“We’re getting our visas together and the papers drawn up and everything,” Perry said. “So as far as I’m concerned we’re doing these dates.”

And then?

“If (bandmembers Joey Kramer, Brad Whitford and Tom Hamilton) were in the room with me I’d say they’d agree that we’ll be working on a studio record in late spring and planning a tour in the fall,” Perry said.

Would Tyler, too, agree?

“The break in his shoulder is a really unusual one,” the guitarist said. “They have to see how it heals before they know if they have to put a pin in it or not. If they do that’s going to set him back a whole lot. I’m just really glad he didn’t get hurt worse. This is my brother and we’ve been together for 40 years and I hated to see that happen.

“Of course we’ve all fallen off the stage at one time or another,” Perry laughed. “Maybe twice in some cases.”

Perry admits he was discouraged when the tour was canceled, but he didn’t stay down for long. On Saturday he plays Fusion 5 in Foxboro ahead of the Oct. 6 release of his solo album “Have Guitar, Will Travel.” Perry cranked it out in 47 days at his home studio with old friends from the Joe Perry Project.

“When we realized that we weren’t going to make the (Aerosmith) studio record I was ready to record solo,” he said. “I figured I’ve got this pile of material and I’ve got time, (so) why not? I went into it full blast because I needed to stay occupied. But I still believe we have another Aerosmith record in us and a better one than the last one. And that’s my half of the story.”

More from Jed Gottlieb’s interview with Joe Perry:

Herald: Your interview with AP got fans worried. What’s the real story about the future of Aerosmith?

Joe Perry: Aerosmith is taking a breather. We had to postpone some dates at the end of two or three tours and that kind of pushed our touring problems into the forefront and didn’t give us a lot of time to make a studio record. After having to cancel this last tour we need to stand back, take a deep breath and let everybody come back down to earth. We’re going on hiatus like most bands do, we’re not kids anymore we don’t need to pound the pavement every day but we got locked into that after postponing gigs and having to make them up.

So did that AP story exaggerate your frustration with Steven Tyler?

Sometimes certain things come out. I always try to be as honest as I can and that’s it. I stand by everything I said. In the context of a longer interview it probably would have seemed less harsh, but it is still the truth. I’m still getting over the fact that tour was canceled. It was the best one we’d put together in such a long time.

What surprised me the most was hearing that you and Steven haven’t been writing together for some time. Is that really true? Nothing in a decade or so?

Relationships go through changes, songwriting partnerships go through changes. When we started using outside songwriters it definitely helped with our success in the ’80s and ’90s. I don’t know, maybe it got too comfortable to rely on that. I don’t think anybody really cares who writes the songs as long as they sound like Aerosmith songs and, at least to me, there have been times when we drifted away from (sounding like Aerosmith). I don’t mind using outside songwriters but I’d still like to see an Aerosmith where the core of the music comes from the guys in the band.

Will that happen? Will there even be another Aerosmith record?

Maybe we have three more records in us. Maybe we have five (and) seven years of touring.

Why were you so upset by the tour’s early end?

The band was getting better and better and the shows were getting better and better. That’s why it’s hard for me even (sigh) to think about how good this tour could have gone and how well it could have been. But I wasn’t going to sit still and let that hold me up. I’m already writing material for my next solo album.

With this free time will you do a solo tour?

That’s a definite possibility. That’s actually my next phone call. We’re trying to see if we should do a release party and I know we’ll be doing some dates after the Aerosmith dates we have to do.

Why start with a gig like playing Fusion 5 in Foxboro?

I don’t have a huge Aerosmith machine behind me. This is, um....

A do-it-yourself kind of thing?

Yeah, and it’s a lot of fun. By doing some of these dates that are small, we just get to get the band comfortable playing places other than my basement. (Laughs) I never know when we’ll get the call from my agent that Jay Leno wants me and I don’t want our first gig to be in front of national TV. Small clubs give you a chance to get ready. And it’s a great way to pay back the fans.

I hope Steven calls you up soon and says he’s ready to write a new album.

That day will come. Whether it’s him calling me or me calling him, it will happen.

Well it seems the Aerodudes have kissed and made up. At least well enough to play a corporate gig:

The mega mix-up revolves around the party that Oracle tosses for 22,000 select clients out on Treasure Island, which this year will feature rockers Aerosmith, Who front man Roger Daltrey and Shooter Jennings (son of Waylon Jennings).

A scheduling snafu involving the big annual Oracle party and the TV show "Trauma" has wound up costing San Francisco $270,000.

The mega mix-up revolves around the party that Oracle tosses for 22,000 select clients out on Treasure Island, which this year will feature rockers Aerosmith, Who front man Roger Daltrey and Shooter Jennings (son of Waylon Jennings).

For years, Oracle has rented out a big chunk of the eastern side of the island for its party, including an old airplane hangar. That was the plan for this year's Oct. 14 bash as well.

However, the city rented out the hangar to NBC's "Trauma," which, while filming in the city, has provided a number of people with jobs - including the mayor's actress wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

Oracle - one of the biggest conventions of the year - found itself out in the cold.

Now, to keep everyone happy, the city is putting up a football-field-size tent on Treasure Island for the Oracle party. Cost: about $270,000.

Mayor Gavin Newsom's office didn't try to explain away the mix-up or defend the ensuing costs. The best the mayor's people could do was point out that the weeklong Oracle convention brings in an estimated $100 million to the city, and "Trauma" brings in about $3 million an episode.

I bought two goldfish and put them in about a gallon bowl to keep me company.   I've been good to them, but they don't seem happy at all.   Is it cruel to keep goldfish in a bowl?

Rolling Stone can confirm that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has entered a rehab facility to treat an addiction to prescription painkillers. “With the help of my family and team of medical professionals I am taking responsibility for the management of my pain and am eager to be back on the stage and in the recording studio with my bandmates Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton and Brad Whitford,” the singer said in a statement.

In an exclusive statement to Rolling Stone, Tyler also addressed his bandmates’ recent allegations that he demanded a two-year break from the group: “I wish to set the record straight and say that I have read reports of a rumored two-year hiatus and want to be clear that this is completely false and I will enthusiastically be writing, recording and performing with Aerosmith as soon as things are handled.”

In November, Whitford told RS he believed Tyler “doesn’t act like a sober person,” adding, “I’m not hanging with the guy, but his history of drug abuse is well documented.” Tyler fell off the stage during a South Dakota show in early August, forcing the band to cancel the remainder of its injury-plagued summer tour. At the time, Tyler told Rolling Stone he resented implications that the accident occurred while he was intoxicated. “The easiest thing in the world is to say he’s drunk or stoned,” he said. After the tour was canceled, word of strife within Aerosmith began to leak out; in early November, Tyler told a reporter he was taking time off to work on “Brand Tyler” and his bandmates responded by announcing they were beginning to search for a replacement singer.

Tyler, 61, last entered rehab in May 2008 to deal with pain from foot surgery. Dr. Brian McKeon, a physician from the New England Baptist Hospital who has treated the frontman, says in a statement that Tyler’s addiction stems from difficulties with pain management. “Over the past 10 years, Steven Tyler has suffered orthopedic injuries and has been in severe chronic pain which will require further surgeries on his knees and feet,” McKeon said. “Managing and controlling his pain has been challenging and despite our use of alternative therapies and the creation of custom shoes built by a team of engineers from Timberland, Steven’s pain has progressed. The balance between managing his pain and avoiding addiction is tenuous and difficult and his bravery in persevering through rigorous touring is admirable. As with many athletes, Steven put his performance first as he struggled with acute pain for years.”

Tyler’s daughter Liv also issued a statement expressing her support for her father. “He is a courageous man,” she said. “We love him and are so proud that he is getting help to balance his pain management, not just for himself but for his family, friends and fans.” Just last week, Tyler hired new management at 10th Street Entertainment.

I think Ronnie needs to go the Frankie Machine route for detox.  He doesn't seem to take the others seriously.  See below if you've never seen the movie:
