SuBo's getting stoned
Susan Boyle to sing Rolling Stones on America's Got Talent

By Dan Wootton, 13/09/2009
SINGING spinster Susan Boyle is back in the saddle - with a cover of the Rolling Stones' track WILD HORSES, we can reveal.

The Scottish sensation, 48, will perform Mick Jagger's 1971 ballad on America's Got Talent on Wednesday.

And her rendition - which sources say is "an absolute show-stopper" - will also be the first single from her first album.

SuBo was due to arrive in Los Angeles last night from London's Heathrow airport, where she was spotted in a comfy grey tracksuit. A source said: "Her opening performance to promote her album will be in front of 20 million TV viewers - so the stakes could hardly be higher.

"But her cover of Wild Horses is sensational and people will be blown away.

"Simon Cowell is a very happy man right now."

SuBo's album, I Dreamed A Dream, will be released on November 23 under Cowell's SyCo label - and is set to be a Christmas hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

It includes the Les Miserables song Susan first wooed the world with on ITV's Britain's Got Talent last spring.

Actually not bad at all. Suitably different from The Stones' version to enable it not to have to be compared with it.

That said, I reserve the right to absolutely hate it when its rammed down my throat for weeks on end after it's released.

Hope it does well for her - and I'm sure Mick & Keith will be rubbing their hands at the potential royalties

Move to the UK, my dear, and I guarantee that you'll quickly find that anything that has Simon Cowell's stamp on it will be rammed down your throat -  TV, radio or newspapers, there's no friggin' escape.

The man has absolutely taken over the music industry, and isn't too shy about letting everyone know it, with a smug facial expression that suggests he's either learned how to fellate himself or has just discovered £1 million in his arse.

I must say, the chick can flat out sing. I agree with Gazza. It is just different enough from the Stone's original that it will be a crossover hit. And yes, it will be crammed down our throats because of the Cowell factor. That said, bravo Susan!

Yeah, but you can only escape so much over here for the most part. I try to remain oblivious, but when you even have the bizarre spectacle of our cretinous Prime Minister issuing statements on his concern for Susan Boyle's health (oddly enough, he was nowhere to be found when the media - quite reasonably - were looking for a quote from him on the release of the Lockerbie bomber), it's a losing battle.

The Arsewipe Culture has won, unfortunately.

nice enough version of the song, and yes, Ms Boyle has talent to spare.
But sick of the whole Cowell circus.
We live with it 24/7 in the UK...it's about time the bubble burst.

It's a toss-up of 2 tossers as to who really runs this country...Peter Mandelson or Simon Cowell.  you made a grown man cry

She's a fantastic singer for sure! And I like her cover a lot. I also really like the version on Tim Ries' album with Norah Jones on vocals. But neither of 'em move me like the original, not even close. The original sometimes makes me stop whatever I'm doing and just stare into empty space. It can be quite dangerous when it comes on when I'm driving.

She prettified the song, and erased its its inherent pain and soul.   Like listening to a  theme from Cats.  So pretty and glorious.

I don't know about listening to a theme from Cats, FG, but I hear plenty of pain and longing in Susan Boyle's cover of Wild Horses.

I can't stand canned strings. I hate the simpleton piano too.  nice voice though.  I don't think I could listen to it again.  It drags on a bit too long

Dragging along..with no advance warning I would have attributed this to Celine Dion! I can see why people are impressed by that type of singer/music but I couldn't care less.

Great voice but the song missed that great Charlie drum roll near the end to build a crescendo. Too flat and no build up.

Nice performance, doesn't do anything for me though, like Celine Dion doesn't do anything, looks more like a sporting feat than true music/emotion.

Susan Boyle’s performance of The Rolling Stones’ classic ‘Wild Horses’ on her American television debut is such a typically audacious Simon Cowell manoeuvre, its hard to know whether to be appalled or applaud his Satanic daring. Just like his appropriation of Leonard Cohen’s (and Jeff Buckley’s) ‘Hallelujah’ for X Factor, Cowell has staged another blitzkrieg raid on one of the sacred spaces of rock culture.

...
Graceless lady'? Susan Boyle sings the Stones

‘Wild Horses’ is not just any old rock and roll song. It’s a raw, emotional country ballad from 1971’s Sticky Fingers, when The Stones had moved away from pop, led by Keith Richards on a journey deep into the roots of their favourite music. It is probably hardcore fans’ favourite period and this is the big ballad at its centre, not a huge hit single, and not as well known to the general public as the more saccharine ‘Angie’, but rather a kind of distillation of the relationship between Mick and Keith, when they were still the Glimmer twins, two poles of attraction, constantly pulling apart yet bound together. Live, it is often performed as an acoustic duet, and still symbolically represents a moment of harmony, mutual dependency and lingering affection between the increasingly divided Jagger and Richards pairing. So it is a song with a special magic about it, and one can almost sense Cowell’s glee as he descends upon it, dragging it into the crass spotlight of his lowest common denominator entertainment empire.

Does anybody really believe Cowell is a Rolling Stones fan? This is the man who said the Beatles wouldn’t have made it on the X Factor, so one can only imagine his thoughts on Jagger’s mangled singing and Richards superbly sloppy playing. I doubt he is even familiar with the original. One imagines he has teams of minions crawling through back catalogues seeking out such gems. Perhaps he alighted on it through one of the many cover versions. Susan Boyle is certainly not the first person to sing ‘Wild Horses’, and not even the worst. Indeed, Gram Parsons recorded it with The Flying Burrito Brothers before the Stones version was released. That’s how cool this song is. It’s been covered by Leon Russell, Neil Young, soul group Labelle, Elvis Costello, Alicia Keys, Guns N Roses, Dave Matthews and such unlikely Stones acolytes as The Cranberries and Deacon Blue.

Maybe Cowell heard Sheryl Crows’ or (lord help us) Natasha Bedingfield’s versions. But most likely it was brought to his attention when a contestant on Canadian Idol performed the song. He would have noted how melodic it was, how potentially epic. He would have mentally erased Richard’s guitars and replaced it with a full orchestra. And he would have delighted in the counter-intuitive notion of the uncoolest star on the planet greeting her American audience with a song by a couple of the original icons of rock cool. It is the final proof that the Rolling Stones have indeed gathered moss. Their image may never recover.
To some, of course, such a version would be a kind of travesty, which must have made it all the more appealing. To most it would be a novelty, which is the area of music in which Cowell is most comfortable. One can only be thankful that he didn’t alight on ‘Sympathy For The Devil’, but that may have been too close to the bone.

Boyle acquitted herself well enough. It’s hard to object to her. She may not be the outstanding singer her fans laud her as but she has a story that connected with the public and she performs with authentic emotion and technical skill, and that’s really what the whole TV talent show circus is all about. I can’t imagine her in pre-fame days, sitting in her room, listening to a crackling vinyl copy of ‘Sticky Fingers’ and dreaming of the time she would get to sing it out to the whole of America, but she seemed to find something to connect to and she performed it like she believed in it. Maybe it’s the line ‘graceless lady’. Yet there a bleeding despair at the heart of that song that she can never touch, especially in a version as musically anodyne as this, where all the nuance is reduced to a plodding piano and identikit orchestration, the sound of a million middle of the road ballads. And the phrase “wild horses” seems as distant from Susan Boyle’s persona as it is possible to get. Maybe she should have changed the lyric to fit in with her own reality: “A number 42 bus couldn’t drag me away from you.” The funny thing about her performance on America’s Got Talent is that even the audience don’t recognise the song til she gets to the chorus, when a ripple of shock and awe goes through the crowd.

Wild Horses has given Simon Cowell his water cooler moment, and may give Susan Boyle her first US hit. After this, you can expect to hear the song performed in every karaoke session ‘til kingdom come, to be bellowed in pubs and parties by every amateur balladeer until there is not an ounce of the original sentiment left to wring out. There’s something to look forward to. In the meantime, we have Susan Boyle’s definitive version. Although frankly, there aren’t enough wild horses left in the land to get me to listen to it again.

Iconic rocker Mick Jagger thinks that Susan Boyle’s version of “Wild Horses” is better than the Rolling Stones original.

The Susan Boyle Fansite Forum reports that during an interview on New Zealand Radio, D.J. Ewing Stephens quoted the Stones front man as saying that the “Britain’s Got Talent” star’s now famous version of the song was a “ghostly version, much better than” anything “he had ever done.”
If this is true, the Scottish singing sensation couldn’t ask for a better endorsement!
What do you think – is Susan’s take on the Rolling Stones classic “Wild Horses” better than the original?

Jagger's being interviewed for a radio station in New Zealand all of a sudden - and the only thing he said that gets quoted was this?

Yeah, right.....

I think one of Ms Boyle's fans are taking the Mick.

Ewing Stevens made that comment after interviewing Susan Boyle's brother, not MJ.
It's about 5 minutes into this audio clip.

Maybe he gets his Stones intel from Paul Cashmere...  Roll Eyes

I wouldn't be too surprised if he had actually said it. He's said a lot of self-deprecating stuff over the years (my favorite, quoting from memory : "Punks ? They're over, right ? I'm the only one who buys their t-shirts on King's Street.").
But I hope he didn't *mean* it !

me too  - Mick can either be self-deprecating or it is further display of his desire to be seen to be always "in touch" with "what's happening" and if that means he has to say he likes SB, well, so be it -

BTW i remember that quote too - it's the Kings Road tho i think

Susan Boyle Debut To Feature Covers Of Madonna, Monkees, Rolling Stones

'Silent Night' and 'Amazing Grace' also on I Dreamed a Dream, due out November 24.
By Gil Kaufman

It's one of the most eagerly anticipated cover albums in years. On November 24, "Britain's Got Talent" phenom Susan Boyle will drop her debut effort, I Dreamed a Dream, featuring the songs that made her an Internet sensation earlier this year, as well as some takes on tunes by the Rolling Stones, Madonna and the Monkees.

After more than 300 million people checked her out on YouTube following her run on "Talent" — where she eventually came in second to dance crew Diversity — Boyle got to work on the album, which has already hit #1 on Amazon.com preorder chart months before its release.

In addition to the Stones cover "Wild Horses," which Boyle recently performed on "America's Got Talent," the album will reprise her heart-stirring cover of the "Lés Misérables" song "I Dreamed a Dream," as well as such inspirational standards as "How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace" and "Silent Night."

Boyle will also tackle the jazz standard "Cry Me a River," Madonna's 1995 song "You'll See," the Monkees' "Daydream Believer," the contemporary folk tune "Up to the Mountain," the 1960s pop song "The End of the World" and a song called "Proud."

Also included is one original track written for Boyle, called "Who I Was Born to Be." One of Boyle's other beloved covers, "Memory" from the musical "Cats," however, is not included in the collection.

Though Boyle struggled with the spotlight during her run on "Talent," in a statement, the 48-year-old singer said she's excited about the album's release. "It was my greatest ambition to release an album, and I have finally achieved it," she said. "This amazing journey has helped me find my own identity and fulfill my wish. There is happiness out there for everyone who dares to dream."
