I do not own an ipod.
I was given a 1st gen I phone, which I want to use
as an ipod, without activating the I phone.
I was told to remove the sim card to make this
possible.  The phone is still in the box, I'm deciding
whether I should sell the phone or use it as an ipod
if this is even possible.  I am flummoxed.

Hmmm... I'm not sure. I don't see why removing the sim card won't allow you to use it in i-Pod mode.

You need an i-Pod. I resisted for ages and am totally thrilled I coughed up and bought one. I still buy CD's and vinyl - so it hasn't replaced anything as such. It's just handy for when I'm lazing around or travelling to and from work. I have nearly 4,000 tracks now (capacity is around the 25,000 mark) and it's like my own personal jukebox. I just click 'shuffle' and away I go.
