EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Watts Quits The Rolling Stones

Undercover has learned that Charlie Watts has quit The Rolling Stones.

A source within the Stones inner-circle says, “Charlie Watts has quit the band. He will never record or tour with the band again”.

The news does not come as a surprise. It was common knowledge that Keith Richards had to talk Charlie into contributing to the A Bigger Bang tour but this time it seems there is no calling Charlie back to active duty.

“The Stones are looking to Keith's Expensive Winos drummer Charlie Drayton to fill the void in all future Stones' callings,” our source says.

With Mick Jagger planning more Stones activity next year, the departure of Charlie will be a huge blow to the band. Charlie was the backbone of the band.

The 68-year old drummer simply doesn't want to do it anymore.

Charlie joined the Rolling Stones in January, 1963. He didn’t expect it would last. In fact, he kept his day job for several months until the band started to feel like a career.

Charlie’s decision to quit the band comes a three years short of the Stones 50th anniversary.

The Stones A Bigger Bang tour ran from August 2005 to August 2007. It was the highest tour of all-time.

Does September always suck?!

I find it a little hard to believe though. I mean, if it was true, you'd think lots of sources would have jumped on it and writing stories. At least I hope it's not true.

And yes, at this point, much as it saddens me, if Charlie quits it's clearly the end of the Stones. Watts just can't be replaced. He's not Bill Wyman Ouch!

Hang in there sister, it ain't over till it's over. And I just can't picture the Stones ending in such low-key fashion.
Remember, in a way Charlie ALWAYS quits the band at the end of each tour. I'm sure it'll take a little convincing. Can't blame him for being too tired of going around the world in circles all the time, but they've reached way too far to stop it like that now.

How credible is this "inside source" if he/she would make this statement:

There is no replacing Charlie. ANY credible source would know that.

That's what they always say, but who knows what they'll decide if Charlie really does quit. Until now, they've always moved on, no matter what happened. If Mick & Keith still want to work together, they'll probably continue to tour as The Stones, with or without Charlie. Just my 2 cents, of course.

Agree 100%. No doubt there'll now be several weeks of torture with no firm official info from the Stones organisation.

Dont be expecting a confirmation or denial any time soon from rs.com - they'll be too busy preparing for their upcoming 'Celebrate Labor Day with the Stones' merchandise firesale. Those fuckers will only tell you about it if it's going to be on a t-shirt.

Still not a whisper about this on any other news source yet. Will have to do some fishing around later and see if there's any more to it.

Have to say I'd be surprised - especially as Charlie told a fan only last month they'd probably be touring next year. If he was quitting, he could have diplomatically just said 'I don't know yet' or something.

I wouldnt dismiss the Charley Drayton story so easily if Charlie did quit. He'd be the obvious choice in theory - not as a replacement member of course, but to fill in as Darryl Jones did when Bill left. And whilst Keith did say many times over the years there'd be no Stones without Charlie, he did go back on that about four years ago and suggest that as long as he and Mick were there, they could actually continue.

But the very thought of the Stones continuing with BOTH members of that rhythm section retiring? Count me out. If one of the current band members bows out now, it's time to acknowledge that its been a great innings and it's time to call it a career. It would simply be a bad joke otherwise. No Charlie, no Stones.

I still have serious doubts about this, though. Hope I'm right!

I was just about to post that too. A lot can happen in one month, but I don't think there's that much that can make one change his mind from "we're touring next year" to "I'm quitting".
