LJ, you may well remember me telling you on the phone a few weeks ago that a person that I know that is very solid as far as "scoops" goes told me that it was all up to Charlie. Chaz has let it be known for some time now that he is sick to death of touring, and has no desire to do so again. And while some of us may well say, "no Charlie, no Stones", I doubt that that is the way Mick would see it. Cohl certainly won't see it that way. I tend to think that we may get one more tour out Charlie and then he'll hang it up. Business wise that would make perfect sense too. They are about to release some of the vaults material (however sparingly) with the 40th Anniversary diskset of Ya-Ya's. Not to mention the latest record deal and the remasters. My bet is that they are finally seeing the end of the road themselves, and will most likely go out with one more massive tour as part of their long goodbye. That's just my thoughts, but I'd wager that the rumor concerning Charlie is more probably true than not.

Just seen a interveiw with Charlie on BBC news South from Crawley where he is playing tonight. After the interveiw the woman said she asked Charlie about the rumours on the internet and he said NOT TRUE.

Good and 'reliable' enough 'source' for me.

The internet is a good place for all kinds of misquotes, blatant lies, rumours, and down right stupidity and we continue to sit at our computers and take them all in and discuss them.  I think we have been doing this kind of thing for many years.. It's been the highs and the lows of the frickin Rolling Stones.  And we will continue to do so until we get it directly from the horse's mouth.....

Oh for crying out loud...

Of course SnK's comment was good enough for me..horse's mouth or not.

I do think, however, that Charlie is doing some "posturing" with his partners about touring and that is where the supposed "insider rumours" are coming from.

That does seem like a very likely explanation for the roller-coaster ride of the past two days...
I think Charlie's always been difficult to convince to get on the world-wide tours and all. And who can blame him, he's been doing it for all his life and he's not twenty years old anymore.

In the end, I still have this strong feeling we will get another big tour out of them. With Charlie of course.
And I don't know what this is telling about me, but I kind of enjoy this turn of events just for the discussions we've been having again  Ouch! Stones -related, that is.

Eventually, I know it will all work out, so no worries  Better seen on weed! You rock!

Charlie on BBC South East yesterday night :

Sorry for the very bad quality (BBC player is very small and videos are compressed), but words are more important than the images.
Especially at the end of the report when the young lady says that
 Charlie denied last days rumours.

I think that's puting an end of all the recent craziness on message boards !

I think Charlie's always been difficult to convince to get on the world-wide tours and all. And who can blame him, he's been doing it for all his life and he's not twenty years old anymore.

Another 'take' on things from a poster on IORR based on info he claims to have sort of alludes to that. If its true, it also pretty much gives credibility to what some people on both 'sides' of the argument are saying.

Basically, his take on it is that Charlie hasn't quit, but HAS told his bandmates that if he's going to continue, things HAVE to be scaled back (which suggests to me no more megatours lasting 18 months to 2 years etc). If the Stones do that, he's in - if they don't, he's not interested.  So, effectively he's passed the decision on his future over to Mick and Keith.

If thats correct, it vindicates the statement from Charlie and the Stones office that he hasn't quit, but at the same time it also gives a bit of credibility (albeit with a different spin on the words used) to Cashmere's story about him not wanting to do another big tour. It's just that it isn't as black and white as the 'Charlie has quit' camp appear to be suggesting.  And as the Stones haven't formally announced ANY plans to tour and probably WON'T do for some considerable time, then they would really have all that period to decide what their medium to long term plans will be as a performing unit from mid 2010 on.  At the minute, it's somewhat apparent that they do INTEND to tour in 2010 at some point, but what format that tour will take is probably still to be decided.

Plenty of time to come up with some arrangement that'll keep him on board AND see the four of them together on a concert stage somewhere in 2010. I've little doubt that they will do that.

I'd be even more amazed if that was the end result, Ade.

I think as far as all of the Stones are concerned, it would have to be 'all or nothing'.

Thank you Jeep!!

That was a nice interview....Charlie is so self-deprecating and charming. I loved when he said Mick does the entertaining and
he just sits in the back and keeps it all together, that Mick is the one who is aware of the girl in the red dress in the front row.
really?

Yep.
As I was tossing and turning last night this is EXACTLY what I came up with too.

I also think Charlie is fed up with the "Twins" and their incessant bickering.

Perhaps this is his way of telling "his singer" and "his guitar player" to get their shit together.

LJ.

Hmm, would I then be very optimistic to think Charlie's requests could actually lead to certain changes and small wonders for the Stones, like, say, club gigs?   Ouch!

Well, "Miss You" started playing on the radio the minute I wrote this, I'll take that as a good sign, lol  Grin

JMHO, for what ever it's worth.....The negotiating the future angle of this story does seem to be the most likely explaination of the events of the last two days.  I'm sure they are discussing everything from the Exile project, new album, producer, tour, etc.  It very well could be that Charlie put his foot down on an issue and somehow the story got blown into Charlie quit.  And it could be any issue.

Maybe he is still mad at Keith about that fashion icon bit...who knows.  But the Stones without Charlie just wouldn't be the same.  Part of their unique sound comes from the fact that Charlie is a JAZZ drummer.  He plays rock n roll with that touch.  Nearly impossible to replace these days.  Not many drummers left with that kind of pedigree that are willing to venture into rock n roll.
