Stones Deny Charlie Is Leaving The Band

by Paul Cashmere - September 3 2009

It looks like only time will tell until we really know if Charlie Watts has hung up his drumsticks in the Rolling Stones.

A source close to the band told Undercover that Charlie has decided not to return to the Rolling Stones and has no interest doing another tour or recording on the next album.

The source also named Charlie Drayton from Keith Richards` other band The Expensive Winos as being prepped for the vacated drum stool.

The loss of Charlie Watts would be a major blow to the Stones. His impeccable timing is the backbone of their sound.

Yesterday’s story has gone right to the centre of the Stones empire with an announcement from Stones spokesperson Fran Curtis calling it a ‘”fabricated story”. Not quite. The story did not come from an anonymous email or from someone unconnected to the band. It was a reliable source.

The next phase of the Rolling Stones is yet to be announced. There is nothing on the calendar so far for 2010. The next major benchmark for the band will be in 2013. January 2013 will mark the 50th anniversary of when Charlie joined the band.

Right now, we will take on board at face value the statement from Curtis saying “drummer Charlie Watts has not left The Rolling Stones” and look forward to hearing about what the Stones will do next.

Not every official announcement about an artist always turns out to be true. Not every reliable source always turns out to be right either.

Undercover does not make up stories. We write about what we hear.

Allright, just to play devil's advocate. Maybe Cahrlie hasn't officially left the band, because their are no Stones projects going on at this time. But when it comes time to record or tour, will Charlie be there? A nasty game of semantics if nothing else.

Whoa. What a roller coaster of emotions in the last few minutes!! I've been at work all day {day care--school aged kids} with no computer access all day....and I see on several sites that Charlie boy has quit the band. Shock! And sadness....Sad Then, almost as quickly, the news that it's not true! Joy! And elation....Smiley

Whew. Cool

call me skeptical, but i dont share the optimism of most as i read through the thread...

if the news was true, i can just imagine (knowing what i do from reading about his nature) how pissed mick would be. i also would think the first thing he would do would be to get out in front of this story... believe it or not, the job of a publicist is to spin the stories in his/her client's favor, or in the way that the client wishes (which is NOT the same thing as speaking the truth). i am not saying the stones' camp is lying, but i am saying that if charlie was done, i would expect the news cycle to take shape EXACTLY as it has been for the past twenty or so hours...

wasnt charlie drayton letterman's first drummer..?

Dunno, but he was Keith's BASSIST.

Aside from the occasional song when the rhythm section switched and Charley was on the skins, Steve Jordan was Keith's drummer (and co-writer)

Odd that the name being bandied about as a replacement would be Drayton instead of Jordan.

Well this would back your skeptical thoughts. although I hope not.

about Fran Curtis:
She's probably best known, though, as the longtime publicist for the Rolling Stones—she's been spinning reporters on the subject of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards' affairs, arrests and drunken escapades for two decades. Most recently, when Richards felt out of a palm tree and suffered a concussion in 2006, Curtis went on record to deny rumors that Richard's injury would require a hole to be drilled in his skull. (About a week later, Richards had a hole drilled in his skull.)

For those of you who want to check out the latest Keith Richards playing on the Dirty Strangers, go over to myspace and check it out. Their page has the songs posted. Keith's guitar chops are as good as ever.

Steve Jordan was the original drummer in "The World's Most Dangerous Band".
Charley Drayton was their drummer for a spell in the 80's.

well, i knew that  Wink

my point was that he has been around the nyc scene for a long time, and he plays both instruments, and has been hired as a drummer at times. i brought up the dave/world's most dangerous band gig, 'cos i knew it was early on in the show's run, meaning he has ALSO been a professional drummer for decades (thx for the clarification about the tenures, lss)...

keef just got 'em both (awesome rhythm section, too).

Charlie's not leaving. I'm not trusting Fran (what a name for a spokesperson, it always brings to mind the Nanny, like she's reading the press releases with that voice  Blank Frigging Stare) but I have all the faith in the world in Mr. Watts. He ain't a quitter.

yeah, but it's her job to.

She could also have said nothing - which would have fuelled the speculation even more.

Fran's based in New York, I believe.  The statement she released was issued at 5 pm UK time yesterday. The info I got from a source close to the band - which he had confirmed by the Stones office - came from London at 11 am yesterday, so it's not as if she was just acting independently by putting out some standard statement. The Stones office dealt with it pretty quickly (just one hour after it circulated) even if she didnt issue anything for 7 hours later.

Her main protest was that it was a fabricated story. Cashmere seems to take that personally as it suggests he made it up. Thats not necessarily what it's saying. It's saying that someone unknown made it up  - and he published it.

I think what Cashmere says in his update has some validity - I dont think he just made the story up for the hell of it. That site is normally pretty reputable as far as entertainment sites are concerned  - but whilst he's correct in saying that not every official announcement turns out to be true, he's also correct in saying that not every 'reliable source' always turns out to be right either. It works both ways.

Time will tell, but I'm with Fotini on this one. Charlie isn't a quitter. Unless it's for health reasons. The most telling quote I ever heard on him came a few years ago from the one person in the world who knows him better than anyone - Shirley. When she was asked about him possibly retiring, she told a journalist that Charlie will NEVER be the one to break up the band, because he couldnt bear to let Mick or Keith down.

Charlie himself told a Polish fan just 3 weeks ago that they'd 'probably' be touring next year. I'd take that at face value. I honsetly can't see him saying something like that if he had absolutely no intention of playing with the Stones again. He could just as easily have sidestepped the question of when there'd be another tour by saying  "I dont know" or "there's nothing planned".

BULLSHIT !!!!!

Zack Starkey is phenomenal and fits in PERFECTLY with The Who . BEST WHO YET !!!!!!

Jason Bonham again is perfect for Led Zepplin and is EXACTLY what Zepplin needs to overcome Plant's vocal deficiencies ( ....and people think Roger Daltrey can not hit the high notes these days !!! )

That said , I am not sure Keef could survive the loss of Charlie Watts from the group ( Thank GOD the rumors are not true  ...... or are they ?! )

For me, its usually over when the drummer either sings or starts doing 15 minute solos.

The sentence every band dreads hearing is when the drummer pipes up "hey guys, why don't we try one of MY songs....?

None of the above has ever happened in the Stones and no other band has lasted this long.

Join the dots.
