" July 14, 2009 -- Showbiz 411

McCartney Will Do Letterman Inside Only

Well, we can scotch that idea about Paul McCartney playing on the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater on Wednesday night.

Word from the New York City Department of Film and Television is that they've declined the Letterman show's application to let McCartney re-create the "Let It Be" movie and perform on top of the theater marquee.

A spokeswoman from the department says that the Letterman show didn't even apply for permission until Monday after this column reported the plan.

Well, it was a good idea. But the marquee is kinda shaky. So McCartney on Letterman is a coup anyway, and we'll be watching whether it's inside or out. "

Thanks Joey for the setlist, I like Macca, he wrote (with Lennon) some of the best songs of the 60's & some of his solo work is great, that's if you like music with medley to it, which I do.

Macca is the lamest.

So to avoid a torrential case of projectile vomiting, I will not only not be going. But I am leaving town IMMEDIATELY.

Yeah I know the Yankees don't play at Citifield. I was just using their ticket prices as a reference for how expensive McCartney tickets are. How's Paul's curveball these days.

I'm going to make my decision the very last minute. Tix can be had on stubhub for $40-$50 bux for upper deck. Since I never sit in my seat, I'm just looking for a cheap way in. Weather wise, Friday looks like the night to go....thunderstorms predicted for Saturday night.

If I go, I may gamble and try to get even cheaper tix at Citifield. The scalpers may take a beating on this one?

Oh... so you're one of those really annoying weasles that try to cram their way into my row at every show.

Just so you know.... everyone around you knows you're not in your seat and thinks you're a dick.

From now on do those around you a favor and don't be such a douche. Just stay in the seat you bought. Those of us that paid for a good seat don't need you cramming our row.

Aren't you the asshole of the day today. You sanctimonious old fuck. I don't go to any seat. I enjoy to dance. I pick a spot with lots of room and stay there. EVEN if I did go to another seat, I don't cram anyone. Music is to be heard not seen.

You sound like one bitter motherfucker! Let me make assumptions about you? Are you one of those assholes that yell SIT DOWN to people? This is one reason I avoid "good seats" Too many old fucks complaining.

BTW...I love how it's "your" row...one more thing...weasels would be the correct spelling.

There you go assuming again. I go to shows to DANCE. I find a spot in the back, for two reason...1) No one likes to be in the back 2) Lots of room to dance. I'll add a third, I'm one tall mofo, taller then 99% of the crowd, so I'm sympathetic to you short people!

You tried calling me out, and got embarrassed because "your" assumption was wrong. Look for the tall guy dancing at the back of any Stones show and come say "high"

I really don't believe this discussion needs to go any furthur.(spelled this way purposely)

You must be a Saint for never sitting in someones seat.

This Sway/Bingo thing is sub par at best. What we really need to know is will the fans be treated to a slow motion, shoulders aligned with jackets on, landscape walk through on the new Crowes dvd?

man, paulie just was not into it today. you could tell he didn't want to be there. "i just don't like the show...."..... oh snap!

dave was asking stupid questions....all about beatles shit that has been covered ad nauseum for years...why didn't he ask about the citifield shows or the new album? still, the marquee was a nice touch...shades of rooftop concert....did they do "come together" during the commercial break? anyone know how many songs they actually did?

thanks for the offer SV....but when you see paulie, ask him if he knows a good george....we already have a good paul, and the george slot has been a bit of a "revolving door"....

The Devil and Paul McCartney
thesleaze.co.uk

Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney’s mysteriously age-defying good looks have long been the source of speculation in the pop world. Whilst contemporaries such as David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Elton John have visibly aged, becoming wrinkled and stooped as the years have gone by, Sir Paul has barely changed. There have been many explanations for this phenomena, including the musician’s vegetarian diet, smoking huge quantities of pot or even secret tantric sex techniques taught to him by the Maharishi back in 1967. However, one man has a far more sinister explanation for Sir Paul’s apparently eternal youth – a Satanic pact which has resulted in McCartney being forced to murder some of pop’s top performers in return for his immortal soul! “The fact is that Paul McCartney did die in October 1966 in a moped accident – but as his soul floated in limbo, he did a deal with the Devil,” declares Ed Melons, a Staffordshire van driver and editor of the Wings of Death website, which is devoted to chronicling McCartney’s demonic activities. “Not only was he allowed to return to Earth, but he was guaranteed prosperity, creativity and youth beyond his wildest dreams!” In return, according to Melons, the Devil wanted Paul’s soul, but the musician thought he could outwit the Prince of Darkness. “He struck a deal that if he could provide Satan with a soul a year until he reached the age of sixty four, then he’d get his own soul back,” says the van driver, who contends that McCartney’s songs are peppered with veiled references to the pact. “In the meantime, his soul was to be hidden in a brown paper bag inside the zoo – the walrus enclosure at London Zoo, to be precise!” Inside the bag is a vinyl record on which McCartney’s true voice – cracked and quavering with age – can be heard performing every song he has recorded since 1966. “The voice on the released versions remains uncannily youthful sounding, albeit rather soulless!” observes Melons. The rapid deterioration in Sir Paul’s appearance since he turned sixty four has led Melons to speculate that his soul has fallen into the clutches of his estranged wife, Heather McCartney. “She’s now using it as a bargaining chip in the divorce, threatening to smash it if he doesn’t pay up,” says Melons.

According to Melons, McCartney’s efforts to keep his devilish pact on track lead to him being behind virtually every mysterious death to have occurred in the world of pop since 1966. “At first he tried to stick to people on the peripheries, rather than taking out performers, so as not to risk drawing attention to himself,” he claims. “But he couldn’t resist the temptation to kill two birds with one stone and get rid of some of the professional competition for long.” Close friend and Guinness heir Tara Browne became his first sacrificial victim in December 1966, when he apparently drove his car through a red light, into the side of a van. Paul quickly reaped the rewards of this ‘accident’, entering the creative phase which would produce the Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. “It was all coming together for him – he was finally eclipsing John Lennon as the main creative force in the Beatles and he was shagging Jane Asher,” says Melons. “He was so pleased with himself and the deal he’d struck with the Devil that he couldn’t resist putting an allusion to it on the album in the form of ‘When I’m Sixty Four’ – none of the other Beatles suspected a thing.” Other, increasingly famous, victims followed: Brian Epstein in 1967; Brian Jones in 1969; Jimi Hendrix in 1970 and Jim Morrison in 1971. “Epstein had to go as part of Paul’s plan to gain complete control of the Beatles,” explains Melons. “Obviously, the death of Brian Jones was designed to destabilise long-term rivals The Rolling Stones, leaving the way clear for Wings to establish themselves as the top band of the early 1970s!” Indeed, Melons is convinced that McCartney’s entire post-Beatles career was founded on the Satanic pact of 1966. “How else do you explain the chart success of Wings?” he asks. “Blood sacrifices and demonic possession are surely the only way that the likes of ‘The Pipes of Peace’ or the ‘Frog Song’ could ever sell any copies.”

However, McCartney found it increasingly difficult to meet his quota of souls as colleagues in the music business began to suspect his involvement in the increasingly high profile celebrity deaths. “John Lennon had long been suspicious of Paul’s post-Beatles success, but it was the knocking off of Elvis which finally convinced him,” reveals Melons. “He remembered that Paul had once described The King as being ‘full of shit’ – the next thing anyone knew, Elvis was dead on the toilet from chronic constipation!” With Lennon now threatening to reveal all, he inevitably became a target for his former band mate. Lennon’s demise in 1980 sent shockwaves through the remaining Beatles, with drummer Ringo Starr barricading himself into his mansion with a ten year supply of alcohol and a shotgun, whilst George Harrison attempted to protect himself within a wall of meditation and positive energy. “George managed to stave off McCartney’s attacks for several years,” says Melons. “No matter what supernatural threat Paul threw at him, he managed to survive – even that demonically possessed loony who broke into his house and tried to stab him that time!” Maintaining his psychic defences took their toll on Harrison, and he finally succumbed to illness in 2001. As he finally approached sixty four, McCartney found himself facing a new threat – the succubus known as Heather Mills McCartney. “Basically, she’d done her own deal with the Devil – who was still sore at the way McCartney had tried to cheat him out of his soul – in exchange for stopping Paul’s murder spree short of his sixty fourth birthday, she’d get her leg back,” claims Melons. “Ironically, though, she too decided to try and double cross the Devil!” Deciding that a divorce settlement of several million pounds was preferable to a leg, Heather McCartney managed to locate and steal Paul’s soul. “She’s already put a couple of scratches in it as a warning as to what will happen if he doesn't go along with her plans for the divorce settlement," Melons asserts. "The effects have been shocking - one minute he was the dynamic rocker we all knew and loved, the next he was this wizened old man sporting a bad hair piece! Just imagine the consequences if she destroys the record completely!” Neither Sir Paul nor his estranged wife have been prepared to comment on Melons’ bizarre claims, although an acquaintance of the ex-Beatle has stated that: “On the whole I think Paul prefers the nutters who think he’s dead – at least they don’t think he’s a murderer!”

The Devil and Paul McCartney

Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney’s mysteriously age-defying good looks have long been the source of speculation in the pop world. Whilst contemporaries such as David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Elton John have visibly aged, becoming wrinkled and stooped as the years have gone by, Sir Paul has barely changed. There have been many explanations for this phenomena, including the musician’s vegetarian diet, smoking huge quantities of pot

I can see it now...

Oh, there's twenty-thousand grandmas
Wave their bag of weed in the air
All burning up their fat spliffs
And shouting, "legalize it!"

< ----- This was Letterman's smartest move since leaving NBC .

Concur Lil' Fella ( Lil' Fijikins ) ........ a smart move on Macca's part too !!!!!

" McCartney clearly feels comfortable with comedians. His stints with Farley and Colbert show that he can have a little fun with his fame. But he's not just doing it for a laugh. He realized -- perhaps 3 years ago, on his 64th birthday -- that the music world doesn't still need him like it used to, and that he'd have to work a little harder for its loyalty. He wants an audience that owns an iPod, goes to Coachella and watches late-night TV -- and he's not the only veteran changing his ways. Letterman allows McCartney to reach that audience.

McCartney's not the only one scoring from the deal, either. His appearance is just one in a long line of consistently strong Letterman lineups. Just this week, Letterman's had Jonah Hill, Kelly Clarkson, Edie Falco, Michael Showalter, Wilco and Feist. Last week, he talked to Queen Latifah Sasha Baron Cohen, Hayden Panettiere, Daniel Radcliffe, Rainn Wilson and Emma Watson. Next week, he'll welcome Anderson Cooper, Anna Paquin, Tom Arnold, Katherine Heigl, Kevin Spacey, Tracy Morgan, Ginuwine and Missy Elliott. "

Alert Board Moderator about this Post!
Paul McCartney came to Citi Field on Friday night to bring a new ballpark one thing that can’t be built in: memories. No one was better qualified.

As a 23-year-old Beatle, Mr. McCartney introduced rock to a stadium audience on Aug. 15, 1965, when the Beatles played a 34-minute set at Shea Stadium, which Citi Field replaced. The Beatles returned to Shea in 1966 on what would be their last tour.

Mr. McCartney was also at the final concert at Shea Stadium, joining the headliner, Billy Joel, on stage last year. Mr. Joel returned the favor on Friday night, singing, whooping and splashing piano chords in “I Saw Her Standing There.” In case the Mets weren’t enough, now Citi Field has musical continuity.

On Friday night, in the first of three shows at the stadium, Mr. McCartney reminisced about 1965, imitating the muffled and distorted sound the Beatles got through the old stadium’s P.A. system, which by all accounts was drowned out by screaming girls. (Nearly 44 years later, somewhat older women seized their cue to scream.)

He also had other memories: of his fellow Beatles John Lennon, to whom he dedicated his memorial song, “Here Today,” and George Harrison, who had given him the ukulele he used to play Mr. Harrison’s song “Something.” He dedicated the ballad “My Love” to his late wife Linda, who sang with Mr. McCartney’s band Wings in the 1970s.

On Wednesday, Mr. McCartney performed at another Beatles venue, when he played a set of songs atop the marquee at the Ed Sullivan Theater in Manhattan for “The Late Show With David Letterman.”

The Citi Field audience brought its own memories: Beatles T-shirts and talismans, held aloft to soak up the occasion. When Mr. McCartney sang Beatles songs, in arrangements that nearly replicated the studio versions, there were loud, fond sing-alongs.

But Mr. McCartney wasn’t fixated on looking back. Although he has enough hits to fill his two-and-a-half-hour set with oldies from Wings, the Beatles and his solo albums, he chose to stay current as well, stumping the nostalgia crowd with songs from the album he released in 2008 as the Fireman, “Electric Arguments.” At 67, he is still a vigorous musician: writing tuneful and wily songs, playing assorted instruments, crooning his ballads ardently, hitting the high notes and howling like a rock and roller.

Of course, Mr. McCartney wasn’t about to return to the primitive conditions of a 1965 Beatles show, when the band performed isolated on an empty ballfield with fans far away in the stands. (There was field seating, on covered turf, along with the stands at Citi Field.)

Stadium concerts have evolved mightily, and Mr. McCartney had all the paraphernalia to make his music fill the stadium as the sound and image of the Beatles could not (which didn’t make the Beatles concerts any less exciting). Video screens rendered Mr. McCartney visible to the upper decks, and they illustrated songs like “Back in the U.S.S.R.” (with old images of Russia) and “Got to Get You Into My Life” (with the computer-animated Beatles from the video game “The Beatles: Rock Band”). Flash pots and fireworks blazed to underline the explosive transitions of “Live and Let Die.”

As always, Mr. McCartney was boyish onstage, making faces and tousling and retousling his hair. His genial and straightforward presence made some of his songs even more enigmatic, like “Jet,” “Helter Skelter,” “Flaming Pie” (the title song of Mr. McCartney’s 1997 album) and “Mrs. Vandebilt” (a song he resurrected from the Wings album “Band on the Run”).

Mr. McCartney plays like a musician cheerfully doing his job. He makes no fuss over how many paths he opened with the Beatles and how much he can do. At Citi Field, the delicacy of “Yesterday” and “Blackbird,” the near-gospel of “Hey Jude,” the mandolin-strumming skiffle of “Dance Tonight,” the quasiclassical string parts of “Eleanor Rigby” (digitally simulated) and the lusty blues-rock of “Let Me Roll It” were all part of Mr. McCartney’s music, and all performed neatly and deftly. Mr. McCartney keeps his songs familiar; his band members barely deviated from the solos played by the Beatles and Wings. So when Mr. McCartney did make changes, they were striking — particularly when he segued from the middle of “A Day in the Life” into “Give Peace a Chance,” with a peace sign on the video screen and the crowd raising two-fingered V-signs while singing along.

When Mr. McCartney and the Beatles played Shea Stadium in the 1960s, they were brash young rockers. It was before the orchestral ambition of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” or the introspection and style-hopping of “The Beatles” (known as the White Album), with songs the Beatles themselves would perform only in the studio, though Mr. McCartney has taken them on tour. It was before Mr. McCartney’s songs became something parents introduced to children and grandchildren. And it was before Mr. McCartney had another four decades of experience, losses and memories to sing about, in a stadium that awaits history of its own.

Macca @ Fenway is as bad as Buffet @ Fenway.
I do not mean Warren Buffet either.
Bon Jovi was to have played Fenway, instead we get
the Beatle who did not buy his own music.
The same Beatle who had the audacity to alter
the songwriting credits to show Lennon second
after Lennon died.  The same Beatle who chose not
to have Ringo play onstage with him during Live Aid II.
Would this have killed Macca to do this?
Give me Ringo before Macca.
I do not like Macca.

" steely dan sucks ! "

You make young Joey weep and shit liquid ! .. Why ?!  ... WHY ?! .. !!!!!

" Steely Dan is a band that could not come to be now. During the seventies and early eighties, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker created tricksy, extra-credit songs full of jazz learning and recorded them meticulously with session musicians capable of playing at any level, though not usually asked to work to Fagen and Becker’s unforgiving specs. The lyrics were generally jaded assessments of young women, the older men who coveted them, and other humans caught at their least flattering moments. Steely Dan’s original records are creepy and astonishing—they are models of surprise, intricacy, and slick surfaces. The group rarely toured and disbanded in 1981, but Fagen and Becker reunited in the early nineties, released a pair of records, and are now playing several of their classic albums in their entirety on their “Rent Party ’09” tour. Would anybody this smart and cynical go into music now, especially given that the money is in touring rather than studio work? We will need to monitor the sourest young prodigies to find the answer. ♦ "

The fact that MICK was at the McCartney show does show he is checking out the competition! The Stones were checking out the New Yankee Stadium to be the first to do a concert there, but Macca beat them to it with being the first to open CitiField (formerly Shea Stadium home of the NY Mets) so maybe MICK is still pondering this.
and
Yesterday I got an email from The Beacon ~ Steely Dan tickets are being discounted to $99 from $172. Still too much. This means the shows arent sold out, several nights at the Beacon in mid August are booked. They over-estimated the fan base, or overpriced the tickets, or both.

Steely Dan were really hot in their day, but no new music = boring concert, such as THe Police. When I saw them last year it was same old same old ~ no new tunes, and they didnt even change the arrangements. I was afraid Steely Dan would be that way too. Have yo seen them lately Joey?

Steely Dan have released new music in recent years and toured behind it - 'Two Against Nature' and 'Everything Must Go'.

The current Beacon run is a little different.
Some of the shows will feature albums in their entirety - 'Aja', 'Gaucho', and 'The Royal Scam'.
Others will have the setlists determined by internet requests, shades of the Stones BTB tour.

Dan Aquilante of the NY Post's review of Tuesday's 'Aja' show:

Duo goes back to their old school

The kings of jazz rock -- Steely Dan -- are still reelin' in the ears for an eight-show Beacon Theatre residency that opened Tuesday with a towering performance.

At this show, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen sang that they'd never go "back to their old school" -- yet the band's principals were totally old-school in their pristine, studio-quality versions of their hits.

The concert bowed with a front-to-back, note-for-note rendition of their classic jazz-rock masterpiece "Aja," the band's best-selling album. It's ranked No. 143 among Rolling Stone's top 500 albums. Subsequent New York performances will give the same treatment to SD albums "The Royal Scam" and "Gaucho."

How close to the record were guitarist Becker and keyboardist Fagen?

Dead on.

Just to give the audience a Steely Dan-ish hint at the band's goal, on the side of the stage was an actual turntable, with the record on it. When the band finished "Deacon Blues," the last song on side one, a back-up singer flipped the vinyl to side two and set down the needle again.

Despite bellyaching about a cold, Fagen's vocals were excellent, surprisingly supple as he reached for the high notes.

The most devoted SD fans could probably tell you the differences between the complicated original version of "I Got the News" and the rest from these live renderings. But even a casual fan could discern the underlying cool of the originals, released 32 years ago, at the heart of this concert.

And while the flow of the album as it moves from "Black Cow" to title track "Aja" happens with the ease of taking a deep breath, hearing the songs live highlights the quality and consistency of this music. There isn't a single weak tune in the batch.

Yes, the middle show was a little slow, but the band made up for it with a greatest-hits closer featuring "Hey Nineteen," "My Old School," "Kid Charlemagne" and an audience-rousing encore of "Reeling in the Years." If you're a Steely Dan fan, catching one of these shows is a must.

Yes Bitch and they were excellent .

You see Bitch ,  as you well know  , the best Steely Dan has to offer is not apparent to a casual listener, and doesn't reveal itself immediately. Dan tunes are generally complex, and it takes effort, and time, to fully appreciate their true beauty. Most pop tunes are quite the opposite, all flash but little substance. Of course, the boys are such good songwriters they can even capture the attention of the great masses, with their beautiful melodies and pop hooks, from time to time.

But it goes further than that, even. Unlike most popular artists, Don and Walt do not pander to their audience and/or write songs based on what was popular to the masses. They made music for themselves, first and foremost. Very few artists have exercised that kind of artistic integrity and maintained it over such a long period of time. Add to that their great reluctance to do the things most artists are willing to do, to sell records and further their popular stardom. Don and Walt have no interest in being "Rock Stars".

In many ways, I reverse the question  and wonder, "How did so many Steely Dan songs ever become popular with the great unwashed?" They were lucky to be around at the right time, when radio played diverse music, and wasn't as beholden to the consultant-driven playlists and cross-media forces that exist today.

It's clear to me that many who grew to like the Dan during the 70's, were drawn to the pop-side of their music. What might be less clear (but no less true) is a large percentage of those people have some trouble with the newer stuff, which lacks some of the flash of their earlier stuff...but still retains the substance. Just like Dan past, the new stuff grows and glows after repeated listening. The songs are, on the whole, more fully realized. But let's face it, they have fewer shiny things (wailing guitar solos, killer pop hooks) for those who need to have instant gratification in order to facilitate further listening.

I agree that many simply have not been properly exposed to the music of Steely Dan, and they would be better off, musically, if they were. But I also have enjoyed the bond serious Dan fans have with each other, the secret we share, that others are either incapable of knowing or unwilling to learn. It's good to see the boys experience a bit of a revival in public appreciation/adoration, from time to time. I just hope that appreciation never gets too widespread, as it will be a sure indication they are doing something wrong.

'kins .

I caught a Steely Dan show last year. It was quite excellent. Mixed up the setlist very nicely. I would love to see them do all of The Royal Scam live. Can't fit it in the budget though. Too much BRUUUCE.

Amen Bitch !!!!!!

On Don:

"In a band with almost zero stage presence, he’s a wild card, a kind of gothic Muppet: arms moving up and down like monster claws, jaw opening wide on every line. His voice faltered a few times, the normal erosion of age. But he was deep in the music, singing rhythmically and playing astonishingly good keyboards: unprepossessing solos, swinging, nasty and percussive, a cross between Count Basie and Ray Charles."

This is mighty tasty stuff. Full review here:

Beatles legend Paul McCartney will be going on the road for the final time next year with a string of huge concerts to mark his retirement.

According to the Sun, the 67-year-old is in talks to play at landmark locations around the world including China's Tiananmen Square and Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin - the crossing point of the old Berlin wall.

"Paul wants to go out with a bang," a source told the paper. "He's played countless stadiums over his 50-year career and is on the hunt for the most unusual locations he can find."

"The tour in 2010 is likely to last well over a year, by which time he will be almost 70."

"He might play the odd benefit gig if the likes of President Obama gives him a bell - but other than that he'll be putting his feet up and enjoying retirement."

Just internet gossip along the lines of "This is the last Stones tour ever". Paul hasn't said he's quitting in 2010. On the other hand, until this decade he didn't really tour all that frequently.

Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney hasn’t sold out Fenway ... yet

By Thomas Grillo
Wednesday, August 5, 2009
Boston Herald.com

Fans may have had enough of Paul McCartney’s silly love songs - and the novelty of seeing a concert at Fenway Park may have worn off.

Unlike Bruce Springsteen, the Police, Dave Matthews and the Rolling Stones, all of whom sold out Fenway Park in minutes, there are still plenty of affordable tickets available for Sir Paul’s shows tonight and tomorrow.

“The economy has taken its toll,” said James Holzman, president of Ace Tickets.

It’s unclear how many tickets are available for the two shows or whether fans can buy seats at the Fenway Park box office.

Heidi Collins at Live Nation, the concert promoter, said the shows were not sold out but refused to disclose any details. She referred calls to McCartney’s New York publicist. But Michelle Barrera, McCartney’s spokeswoman, said in an e-mail, “We do not have that information.”

One thing is clear, however. The concert promoters are scrambling to publicize the show with last-minute commercials on the radio.

The Rolling Stones, who performed at Fenway in 2005, hold the record for the highest average ticket price there at $334, according to StubHub, the online marketplace for ticket buyers and sellers.

A check of Ticketmaster late yesterday found dozens of $69 seats available for McCartney on both nights. An e-mail this week said new tickets had been released “due to production modifications.”

FanSnap.com, a search engine that provides links to tickets from ticket agents, has 1,800 McCartney tickets for the two nights available yesterday starting at $75 and tickets were being offered on the Craigslist Web site for below face value.

Michael Janes, FanSnap’s CEO, said the former Beatle faces tough competition from summer tours. “I’ve never seen so many concerts in one summer,” he said. “There’s lots of musicians competing for the fan’s dollar.”

Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief at Pollstar, a music industry trade magazine, said that selling 80,000 tickets over two nights is a daunting task even in a go-go economy.

“Perhaps people have already seen McCartney before, and if you have to make hard economic choices, maybe you don’t go again,” he said.

It might have been a little overly ambitious for Paul to schedule 2 stadium shows. Espicially since he just did 3 in NYC and the prices he's charging aren't cheap. But he is getting good reviews.

LOL. More chance of a Beatles reunion.

Easy to have two threads, going by the original title of this one - so I've edited it to add that its a Macca thread.

When I saw the heading 'Paulie on Letterman' I assumed it was this Paulie...

Fenway is another affirmation that Macca's reach may have exceeded his grasp on this tour.

Tickets for the "sold out" NY shows were plentiful in the days leading up to them, and the DC show was also undersold.

Macca scotches retirement rumors:

The Web has been buzzing, thanks mostly to info from unreliable sources, that you’re retiring. Any truth at all to those rumors?

I was thinking this morning that it was five years ago that this same rumor went around. All I can say is that I’m not retiring. It’s like, “Paul is dead.” “No, I’m not,” is all I could say. I did talk about retirement in one sentence in one story and only to say, “No way Jose.” But someone must have only read part of that one sentence. As long as people want to come and hear me, I’ll probably be doing this. It’s just so easy to star rumors. Wanna start one now?

Former Beatle denies tabloid reports that his next world tour will be his last

Paul McCartney has denied claims that he is set to retire after completing his next world tour.

Tabloid reports last week (July 31) stated that the former Beatle was on the verge of announcing details of what would be his last tour, which would apparently see him call at unusual venues including China's Tiananmen Square and Berlin's Checkpoint Charlie.

However, an interview with the Boston Herald saw McCartney laugh off the reports, even comparing them to the notorious 'Paul is dead' rumours that made headlines in 1969.

"All I can say is that I'm not retiring," he confirmed. "It's like 'Paul is dead'. 'No, I'm not,' is all I could say. I did talk about retirement in one sentence in one story and only to say 'No way, Jose.' But someone must have only read part of that one sentence."

McCartney added that he currently wants to continue playing live for as long as possible.

He said: "As long as people want to come and hear me, I’ll probably be doing this. It's just so easy to start rumours."

The veteran rocker also praised two of the acts supporting him on his current tour – Thievery Corporation and MGMT.

"Tonight [August 1] we're playing Washington and we have Thievery Corporation, this local group, opening up. And MGMT [who open McCartney's two Boston Fenway Park shows on August 5-6], well, I just happen to like them."

LONDON – Hundreds of Beatles fans swarmed Abbey Road on Saturday, singing songs and snarling traffic to mark 40 years since John, Paul, George and Ringo strode across the leafy north London street and into the history books on iconic pop photos.

The famous photo graced the cover of the Fab Four's "Abbey Road," the last album recorded together, and shows the bandmates walking purposefully across the zebra-striped asphalt.

It remains one of music's best-known album covers, endlessly imitated and parodied. Although the shoot itself only took a few minutes, so carefully studied was the cover for signs and symbolism that some die-hard fans came to the conclusion that Paul McCartney — who appears barefoot and out of step with the rest — had secretly died.

McCartney himself made fun of the bizarre conspiracy in the title of his 1993 concert album, "Paul is Live."

Conspiracies aside, the ease with which fans can imitate the scene has drawn throngs of tourists to the site every day, turning the street into "a shrine to the Beatles," said Richard Porter, who owns the nearby Beatles Coffee Shop and organized Saturday's event.

Crowds spilled into the street, cameramen jostled for angles, and exasperated drivers honked their horns.

"I didn't expect so many people to be here," said German visitor Tschale Haas, 50, who was dressed in a Sgt. Pepper jacket.

Abbey Road, which cuts through London's well-to-do neighborhood of St. John's Wood, is home to the eponymous studios where the group recorded much of its work.

The group decided to shoot the photograph in August 1969 while recording music for the last time together. For the shot, photographer Iain Macmillan stood on a stepladder and police held up traffic while the Beatles walked back and forth across the street.

The enduring popularity of the site has caused headaches for local authorities, who have had to move the Abbey Road street sign up out of reach to prevent theft and repaint the wall every three months to hide fans' graffiti
