Joe Perry: Stones putting together new album

Via Shidoobee:

"And then when they go out on the road, I saw them play at Shepherd's Bush a few years ago and they played
almost the whole record of, I think it was 'Bridges to Babylon.' And they played all the album cuts, so-called,
and it was great. I never would have thought it. Jagger said, 'When you want to hear the big hits, go to the big
place down the street, 'cause they were playing Wembly Stadium like four days later. And this place at
Shepherd's Bush held about 2,000 people. And so they were just playing their so-called album cuts and
whatever they wanted and it was all fresh and new, and it was the Stones - it was great. So they're in the
studio right now putting another one together and they're going to keep doing it. It still feels good."

A word of caution: Joe Perry also recalled the Stones' club show wherein they played all the Babylon cuts. So, who knows? It could be that they were working on the re-issues coming out soon.

In other news, Stephen Tyler is dead, a victim of a serial killer.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090703/ap_on_re_us/us_sc_killing_spree

SC serial killer blamed for 4 deaths in 6 days

By MITCH WEISS, Associated Press Writer Mitch Weiss, Associated Press
Writer – 1 hr 6 mins ago

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Sheriff's deputies searched Friday for a serial killer
blamed for four deaths over the past six days as terrified residents
wondered who might be next.

Investigators have not figured out how the victims are linked or if
they knew the man who shot them. So far, all they have is a sketch of
a suspect and a possible getaway vehicle, said Cherokee County Sheriff
Bill Blanton.

"There's no evidence there is a hit list," Blanton said. "There's no
evidence he knows the victims. There's no evidence the victims are
connected."

But plenty of evidence links the killings, said Blanton, who would not
provide details.

"Yes, we have a serial killer," he said at a news conference.

The latest victims were found in their family's small furniture and
appliance shop near downtown Gaffney around closing time Thursday.
Stephen Tyler, 45, was killed, and his 15-year-old daughter was shot
and seriously injured. Tyler's wife, his older daughter and an
employee found them in Tyler Home Center, County Coroner Dennis Fowler
said.

The latest killing happened one day and about seven miles from where
family members found the bodies of 83-year-old Hazel Linder and her 50-
year-old daughter, Gena Linder Parker, bound and shot in Linder's
home. Blanton would not say if Tyler and his daughter were also bound.

The killing spree began last Saturday about 10 miles from Tyler Home
Center. Peach farmer Kline Cash, 63, was found shot in his living
room. Investigators said he appeared to have been robbed, but they
haven't determined if anything was taken in the latest killings.

The shootings have prompted fear in Cherokee County, 50 miles south of
Charlotte, N.C., and home to about 54,000 people. The county had just
six homicides in all of 2008, and that was double the number reported
the year before.

Residents have "their guard up and their gun handy," said state Sen.
Harvey Peeler, R-Gaffney, who recalled the area being terrorized once
before, in the 1960s, by a serial killer dubbed the Gaffney Strangler
who murdered several women before he was caught.

"There is no greater fear than the fear of the unknown and nobody
knows. You can cut the tension with a knife," Peeler said. "People are
locking their doors, even in broad daylight."

The latest shootings took place less than a half-mile from the
sheriff's office, the command center where at least 30 investigators
were already working on the case. Blanton said a profiler has brought
up the possibility that Tyler and his daughter were shot to taunt
investigators, but he said his only concern is solving the case.

"We had a 15-year-old girl shot; he killed an 83-year-old woman. The
good people of this community don't deserve that. And it doesn't look
like he shows much concern or remorse," Blanton said.

The sheriff reminded people they have a right to protect themselves
and asked them to call 911 to report anything suspicious. He also
advised salesmen and others to avoid knocking on strangers' doors with
so many on heightened alert.

"People are going to start shooting at shadows," Blanton said.

If they're making a new album 'as we type', its evidently minus Ronnie as he's been working on his own record lately plus he's been performing in England and Norway in the last week. Plus Charlie has been playing a few club shows in England in recent weeks. Seems a bit unlikely, although maybe any work is in the very early stages.

Joe's recollection of the Shepherd Bush setlist is a bit dubious to say the least, although he remembers the Jagger quote pretty much verbatim.

(Shattered/It’s Only Rock’n Roll/Respectable/All Down The Line/Some Girls/
                  Melody/I Got The Blues/Brand New Car/Moon Is Up/Saint Of Me/Honky Tonk
                  Women/Band introduction/You Got The Silver/Before They Make Me Run/
                  Route 66/You Got Me Rocking/Tumbling Dice/Brown Sugar/Jumping Jack Flash)

What a great and mad night that was.

I have recently transferred the Shepherd’s Bush show onto my i-Pod – awesome!

I hadn’t listened to it in an absolute age and had forgotten what a masterful performance it was. Keith riffs and bends strings like a demon on Some Girls and I really wish they bring back Route 66 for the next tour.

I have speculated before that they have had time since '07 to put something together, either brand new material or, most likely, finishing off material already laid down.

What's your take on this, Gazza ?

Incredible that we get updates from people like Courtney Love (the Exile re-dux) thing and a thousand people not even close to the Stones orbit, but not a word from the band themselves. Now, if i see a pic of Jagger emerging from a studio somewhere with his arm around keith and they are giggling and happy and saying "We are working ond something new", then i can believe it.

With the magic of pro tools, anything is possible.

In terms of working together, I think theyve just been sitting on their arses for two years and have pretty much only met at film premieres or the odd business meeting.

My gut instinct is that they would like to tour next year (they DID consider touring THIS year) but arent too keen on the idea of making a new record first. However, they know that they have to put SOMETHING out to give them an excuse to go on the road.

Correct. 8th June. Yep, I was there.

Wasnt an easy ticket. There was no internet sale or anything like that. They had rescheduled the 4 UK stadium shows from 1998 to June 1999 (Edinburgh 4/6, Sheffield 6/6 and Wembley 11 & 12/6) after the UK 1998 tour had been postponed for tax reasons and had at the time promised a series of 10-12 UK-wide theatre shows ("including several in cities where they havent played in over two decades") to make up for the postponements, which of course never happened as they chose to do 35 US arena shows and a dozen European stadium gigs instead.  Angry

However, there had been strong rumours for months that there would be a small show in London (so much for the cities they never play) during the period between Sheffield and Wembley. It was a case of keeping my ear to the ground for info and being discreet about what I was hearing because it was going to be really hard to get a ticket. I'd heard a rumour about Shepherds Bush for 8th June just before I left home for Edinburgh (my wife and I attended all the UK dates). I even got my first cellphone a month before specifically so I would maximise my chances of getting a ticket.

When in Edinburgh I was told the show was on, and we befriended an American member of the Stones road crew on the train to Sheffield who confirmed it was on, subject to Mick's voice being up to it. I was told that the onsale date would be 10 am on Monday 7th June at Tower Records at Piccadilly Circus (you have to admire the Stones' nerve for deciding to reward their fans for the inconvenience of the postponed dates with that one theatre show instead of 12 - and then holding it in London and putting the tickets on sale IN London, whilst their fans who were following the shows were 220 miles north of there in Sheffield). We arrived in Sheffield on the afternoon of the show there, I told my wife there was a train out next morning at about 7.30 am and went to book the tickets - when I got to the desk and the guy told me the first train was at about 5.20, I went for that one instead. My wife almost had a heartattack when I told her.

We needed to get to London as early as possible. Whilst I knew Shepherds Bush Empire held about 1800, there had been rumours that maybe only 500 tickets would be available to the public. The owner of the hotel allowed fans to sleep in the lobby to the point where I was literally tripping over bodies on my way out the door the next morning - amazingly he offered to drive the two of us plus Angiegirl from Holland and her friend from Italy to the station. About three and a half hours later we were at Kings Cross station in London and got a cab to Piccadilly Circus where about 400-500 people were already in the queue. We ran with our suitcases and joined it while some guy came around and stamped numbers on our hands which meant we would be getting in. They had a very unusual way of selling the tickets. They cost an amazing £10 each. Quite something for a gig featuring the Rolling Stones AND with Sheryl Crow as the opener. You were only allowed to buy one ticket each, you had to pay in cash (no cards or cheques) and they werent even giving any change. You got a ticket and a wristband - and if the wristband was tampered with, you werent getting in.

Everyone we talked to had individual stories about how theyd heard about the gig. My favourite was the guy who knew the date and venue but not the site of the ticket sale (it was formally announced on Virgin radio that morning, by which time hundreds were in the queue). This guy phoned up all the main record shops in central London the day before with the same stock line... "I have a consignment of crash barriers to deliver tomorrow for a Rolling Stones ticket sale..could you tell me what time I should deliver them?". Virgin, Our Price, HMV etc told him they had no idea what he was talking about, and then he hit the jackpot when the person at Tower Records told them to 'have them here by around 8 am". Brilliant.

In the end, they sold about 1000 tickets to fans, who filled the floor, with the families and celebs sitting upstairs. The crush downstairs was absolutely mental at times. I know a girl who was down front and who ended up with cracked ribs. we stayed off to the side near the bar and it was mostly OK. I've heard some people bitch about this show, but I thought they were brilliant. Ronnie - uncharacteristically for this tour - was absolutely superb and we got some genuine rarities - a one time only "Moon is Up" and "Melody" for the only time since El Mocambo (so rare that Jagger even thought theyd never played it before).

16-18 cuts of a Mick Jagger solo album with a backing band consisting of Keith, Ron, Charlie, and who ever will play bass.

i'll pass.  that's too many tracks.

i'd like to hear 12 tracks that are:
1) NEW and not rehashed former sessions ala Tattoo You (their most overrated album EVER).
2) a true Mick and Keith collaboration, probably highly unlikely
3) an album on which the actual members of the band play ALL the instruments instead of Waddy Watchell playing "Keith" while Keith eats a beef pie
4) GOOD quality.
5) gonna sound like the god damn Rolling Stones.  where did we go wrong after all these years letting Mick bring in shit that could be his solo material, making the "Stones" sound like caricatures of themselves.

i pessimistically await its delivery.

The new song "Sweet Socialists" song should be interesting lamenting how they can't make a buck in the shitty economy, government green mandates on how many trucks they can travel with, new laws forcing only one guitarist to play at a time, and new energy taxes.

Hey Mick, you did a fundraiser for the bastards, don't whine too much, LOL!

..and I'm almost certain he would have very little to do with it. Considering his and the band's lack of involvement in CURRENT projects like Live Licks or Rarities and the fact that they even let guitar technicians add overdubs on to the Biggest Bang DVD.

Apparently, Don Was is mixing the bonus material for the Exile deluxe edition. The 18-track album itself isnt being remixed, as its just part of the Universal remasters series.
