Nice funky version of Fire on the Mountain, and a nice Terrapin....I think you could easily segue Fire on the Mountain with Hot Stuff. Both The Stones and The Dead have a similar sound at the same period of their music careers. This is why I love both bands.  Cool

Arrival of Deadheads causes a stir in Mill Valley
Paul Liberatore
Posted: 01/07/2010 06:16:48 PM PST

In the world of the Grateful Dead, Mill Valley has become Mecca this week for Deadheads from across the country who have descended on the normally serene little town for a series of "live rehearsal sessions" by Furthur, a new band formed by the two surviving members of the Dead who live in Marin County.
But the unadvertised series of intimate shows - featuring former Grateful Dead bandmates, guitarist-singer Bob Weir and bassist Phil Lesh - have stirred mixed emotions in Mill Valley.

Some see this as an economic windfall, bringing glamour and excitement to Mill Valley. Others complain that unsavory Deadheads without tickets have been trashing their downtown, hanging out and causing trouble.

"I want to welcome everybody, but this is a little beyond what Mill Valley can handle," said Doug Canepa, co-owner of the Mill Valley Market, who has accused Deadheads of defecating in his driveway and stealing from his store, among other complaints he has lodged with the city.

"What is the city's role in this?" he asked. "Is this what the city bargained for when they issued them permits?"

Conversely, Vasco restaurant in the heart of downtown couldn't be more accommodating, extending its dinner hour from 10 to 11 p.m. and giving Furthur fans a 20 percent discount on meals.

"They've been great," hostess Annie Bresnahan, 28, said Wednesday night before a show. "They're very sweet. They come in before the show and they eat and they come back afterward and eat more. They usually

pay with cash, spend a lot of money and tip well."
At The Depot, a popular bookstore and cafe, there have been no problems, and a small uptick in business, said Leonard Jay, bookstore manager. He said he and his staff had to laugh when a woman from out of town asked whether Mill Valley was safe after dark.

The unprecedented run of "rehearsal sessions" at the 225-seat Masonic Hall and the slightly larger 142 Throckmorton Theatre are in preparation for the first national tour by Further, which Weir and Lesh have named in honor of Ken Kesey's psychedelic bus.

In addition to Weir and Lesh, the band includes Jeff Chimenti, Jay Lane, Joe Russo and lead guitarist John Kadlecik, who has been recruited from the Grateful Dead cover band the Dark Star Orchestra.

"This is a once in a lifetime experience," gushed Deadhead Louie Lardo, a 48-year-old director of a drug and alcohol treatment center who traveled all the way from Pittsburgh, Pa., to attend as many shows as he could get tickets for. "That's why I'm here."

On Wednesday, Lardo was at the front of the line outside the Throckmorton Theatre along with newly-made Deadhead friends from around the country, including Jeremy Grossbard, a clean-cut 40-year-old veterinarian from Phoenix, Ariz., wearing a Polo windbreaker over his tie-dye T-shirt.

"While we may not all live in Mill Valley, there is something hometowny about this," Grossbard, a Deadhead since 1984, said. "This run of shows will be one of my fondest Grateful Dead memories. Unfortunately, tomorrow is my last night, then I'll have to go back to the real world."

He and Lardo had waited in line all day to be among the first to get in, ensuring a coveted spot in front of the stage.

Tickets for the Mill Valley shows, which were available for $25 on the band's Web site and limited to one per person, have long been sold out. The band plays at the Throckmorton Theatre until Sunday, then returns to the Masonic for two final shows Jan. 11 and 12. There are no tickets available for any of the nights.

"It's positive that we have this kind of activity downtown," said Lucy Mercer, founder and executive director of the Throckmorton Theatre. "But there are no more tickets, and we're hoping that there won't be problems caused by a big mass of people coming down thinking they can get in. They can't."

The first sessions at the Masonic, on Dec. 27 and 28, seemed to catch the town unprepared for the Deadhead encampment of psychedelic-painted vans and buses that materialized as if by magic in the public parking lot beside city hall.

Canepa described the scene as "like Garberville," referring to the Mendocino County town notorious for its marijuana trade and hippie lifestyles.

In response, the Mill Valley Police Department has added extra patrols in the area, using existing staff.

"We've had mostly sanitary-type issues, people urinating and defecating in some of the neighborhoods, and we've had an arrest of someone being drunk in public," said Interim Police Chief Angel Bernal. "We want to have a strong presence without being overbearing. We want people to have a good time, but within the law."

Bernal said his officers have been working closely with the black-jacketed security people from San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium, who have been hired by the band.

"We have worked with the people running the show to police the area, and they've been very cooperative," Bernal said. "The people who pay for their tickets and go inside are behaving. It's the people without tickets who basically are causing the issues. We're keeping an eye on that."

For Weir and Lesh, this has been a homey way to rehearse for a tour, practicing in the hall during the day, going home for dinner and returning in the evening to go on stage, usually just after 8 p.m.

For two superstars, they have tried to keep their presence as low-profile as possible, banning reporters and photographers and discouraging publicity.

"We don't want any problems," said manager Matt Busch. "We want to be able to do this again."

Yeah SCL, the "scene" has changed with some of the younger "Heads" I noticed when I saw Furthur last month. I kid you not, I feel safer walking in The Bronx at night then I did around certain groups of "Deadheads" at that show. Really scumbagish and you can see the look in their eyes that they were looking to rip off people. Inside the show, I took everything out of my coat pockets, because I had the feeling someone was going to try and rip it off as I had it in the seat next to me.

I never had that feeling at any type of Grateful Dead show. Too many fuck-ups who were there to rip people off and sell/take huge amounts of drugs.

On a happier note...here's a great video to a KFOG friday 5pm staple out in San Francisco.

Yep that one's still a friday afternoon tradition on KFOG. As far as Furthur goes. I give Bob and Phil credit for trying to do something for the fans and keeping the press out. But it seems Mill Valley has become an even sleepier little town than usual. A lot of local merchants love having the fans. But if someone took a crap on my lawn. I'd give them something to shit their pants about. Angry

Ah, JFK '89.

A sea of Heads from the Walt Whitman Bridge all the way to the stadium.
100K easy, and likely just as many outside.

My friend was a taper, and we got into the stadium just as the band was hitting the stage.
He turned on his deck and extended his mic stand as were making our way onto the field.
Didn't miss a note...

A smoking hot day and and an equally hot show. Smiley Smiley Smiley

BTW, that was the last "official" event at JFK, but the Stones dress rehearsed the Steel Wheels show
before moving across the parking lot for the tour opener at The Vet.

The 'Better Than The Real Rebirth' boot was recorded at the 8/29 rehearsal.

Grateful Dead Productions will release a 3CD/1DVD Grateful Dead set called Crimson, White & Indigo: July 7, 1989 - JFK Stadium, Philadelphia, planning its release for March 30.

Update: Release 4/20!!!

Woman caught with pot while shoplifting from Walmart
By Jon Johnson

Published on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 3:02 PM MST

The use of Safford officer Sherri O'Neal's keen eye resulted in the apprehension of a female who was attempting to steal from Walmart with marijuana on her while having two warrants for her arrest.

O'Neal was at Walmart for a service call at about 9 p.m. on Monday when she recognized Anna Roybal, 27, of Safford standing in front of the McDonald's restaurant.

She observed Roybal walk into the women's restroom and then arrested her when she came out.

Roybal asked if she could use the restroom, and O'Neal asked her if she had anything illegal on her person.

The suspect allegedly admitted to having some weed in her bra.

O'Neal walked Roybal outside and searched her for weapons and drugs. She located a pen that had been turned into a smoking device in Roybal's sweater pocket and about 8.8 grams of pot in a baggie hidden in her bra. O'Neal also found a bottle of Covergirl Trublend foundation makeup in Roybal's bra and two DVDs down the front of her pants. The DVDs were "Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom" and "Games 4 Girls."

Roybal was transported to the Graham County Jail and was booked on her warrants. A copy of O'Neal's report was sent to the Graham County Attorney's office for review, and Roybal faces possible additional charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and shoplifting.

Marijuana use by seniors goes up as boomers age

By MATT SEDENSKY, Associated Press Writer Matt Sedensky, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 18 mins ago
MIAMI – In her 88 years, Florence Siegel has learned how to relax: A glass of red wine. A crisp copy of The New York Times, if she can wrest it from her husband. Some classical music, preferably Bach. And every night like clockwork, she lifts a pipe to her lips and smokes marijuana.

Long a fixture among young people, use of the country's most popular illicit drug is now growing among the AARP set, as the massive generation of baby boomers who came of age in the 1960s and '70s grows older.

The number of people aged 50 and older reporting marijuana use in the prior year went up from 1.9 percent to 2.9 percent from 2002 to 2008, according to surveys from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The rise was most dramatic among 55- to 59-year-olds, whose reported marijuana use more than tripled from 1.6 percent in 2002 to 5.1 percent.

Observers expect further increases as 78 million boomers born between 1945 and 1964 age. For many boomers, the drug never held the stigma it did for previous generations, and they tried it decades ago.

Some have used it ever since, while others are revisiting the habit in retirement, either for recreation or as a way to cope with the aches and pains of aging.

Siegel walks with a cane and has arthritis in her back and legs. She finds marijuana has helped her sleep better than pills ever did. And she can't figure out why everyone her age isn't sharing a joint, too.

"They're missing a lot of fun and a lot of relief," she said.

Politically, advocates for legalizing marijuana say the number of older users could represent an important shift in their decades-long push to change the laws.

"For the longest time, our political opponents were older Americans who were not familiar with marijuana and had lived through the 'Reefer Madness' mentality and they considered marijuana a very dangerous drug," said Keith Stroup, the founder and lawyer of NORML, a marijuana advocacy group.

"Now, whether they resume the habit of smoking or whether they simply understand that it's no big deal and that it shouldn't be a crime, in large numbers they're on our side of the issue."

Each night, 66-year-old Stroup says he sits down to the evening news, pours himself a glass of wine and rolls a joint. He's used the drug since he was a freshman at Georgetown, but many older adults are revisiting marijuana after years away.

"The kids are grown, they're out of school, you've got time on your hands and frankly it's a time when you can really enjoy marijuana," Stroup said. "Food tastes better, music sounds better, sex is more enjoyable."

The drug is credited with relieving many problems of aging: aches and pains, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and so on. Patients in 14 states enjoy medical marijuana laws, but those elsewhere buy or grow the drug illegally to ease their conditions.

Among them is Perry Parks, 67, of Rockingham, N.C., a retired Army pilot who suffered crippling pain from degenerative disc disease and arthritis. He had tried all sorts of drugs, from Vioxx to epidural steroids, but found little success. About two years ago he turned to marijuana, which he first had tried in college, and was amazed how well it worked for the pain.

"I realized I could get by without the narcotics," Parks said, referring to prescription painkillers. "I am essentially pain free."

But there's also the risk that health problems already faced by older people can be exacerbated by regular marijuana use.

Older users could be at risk for falls if they become dizzy, smoking it increases the risk of heart disease and it can cause cognitive impairment, said Dr. William Dale, chief of geriatrics and palliative medicine at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

He said he'd caution against using it even if a patient cites benefits.

"There are other better ways to achieve the same effects," he said.

Pete Delany, director of applied studies at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, said boomers' drug use defied stereotypes, but is important to address.

"When you think about people who are 50 and older you don't generally think of them as using illicit drugs — the occasional Hunter Thompson or the kind of hippie dippie guy that gets a lot of press maybe," he said. "As a nation, it's important to us to say, 'It's not just young people using drugs it's older people using drugs.'"

In conversations, older marijuana users often say they smoke in less social settings than when they were younger, frequently preferring to enjoy the drug privately. They say the quality (and price) of the drug has increased substantially since their youth and they aren't as paranoid about using it.

Dennis Day, a 61-year-old attorney in Columbus, Ohio, said when he used to get high, he wore dark glasses to disguise his red eyes, feared talking to people on the street and worried about encountering police. With age, he says, any drawbacks to the drug have disappeared.

"My eyes no longer turn red, I no longer get the munchies," Day said. "The primary drawbacks to me now are legal."

Siegel bucks the trend as someone who was well into her 50s before she tried pot for the first time. She can muster only one frustration with the drug.

"I never learned how to roll a joint," she said. "It's just a big nuisance. It's much easier to fill a pipe."

OK my fellow  Deadheads...you've got to see Furthur. This is maybe where The Grateful Dead would be if Jerry was still alive.

They announced their summer tour www.furthur.net

Here's an example of how crazy the setlists are getting. Yes, that's Pink Floyd's TIME!! Sandwiched between Dark Star!

3-6-10 Colorado

Set 2: Golden Road (to Unlimited Devotion) > Bird Song > Alligator > Bird Song Jam > Dark Star > Time > Jam > Dark Star > Morning Dew > Let it Grow > Midnight Hour > Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad > And We Bid You Goodnight E1: Samson and Delilah E2: Uncle John's Band

Maybe an easier way to see what they've played is go to this link and place your cursor over available. You can also buy the soundboard recordings. http://www.livedownloads.com/live-music/3,532,261/Furthur-mp3-flac-downloads.htm...

Look at the 3-3-10 Chicago setlist  Blank Frigging Stare Ouch! taylor made smile

Set 1: Playing in the Band > Rider Jam > Born Cross Eyed > Eyes of the World, Jack Straw > Wharf Rat, Uncle John's Band > China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider

Set 2: Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain, New Potato Caboose > St. Stephen > The Eleven > The Other One > Dark Star Jam > So Many Roads > Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower

E: Box of Rain, Johnny B. Goode

Warming up to 'em, but still get the heebie-jerries listening to Kadlecik - sounds and plays too much like Garcia.

As far as this being a possible glimpse of the Dead if Jerry were still alive, very unlikely, imo.
I'd rather have the memories of what was than to tack 15 years onto the noticeable decline of his last couple.

Phil turned 70 this week, and he still brings the thunder.
Listening to his birthday bash now.

Yeah, the last 4-5 years were painful to see/hear. I hopped off the bus after the 91 summer tour. I like John, I believe they needed someone to sound like Jerry. Jerry's sound was The Grateful Dead, of course along with the others playing their part to perfection.
For  as cheesy Bob use to get at times, he's one if the best Rhythm guitarist ever. IMO. Phil and Bob are playing just as good now as in their hey day.

Listen here for free audience recordings.

I 'spose.

Me, I was perfectly happy to see where Phil & Friends took things.
The revolving cast of characters always kept me interested.

Ratdog, not so much.

Bottom line, I'm glad they're still doing it...

A very heart-felt memorial for Amy Farris.
