Bon Jovi Among Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductees

Posted Mar 3rd 2009 10:00AM by Stephen L. Betts
Filed under: Country News
Country and rock-blending tunesmiths Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora join another songwriting team who also enjoyed crossover success -- Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway -- as inductees into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for 2009.

Although they have their roots in rock, Bon Jovi and Sambora reached the top of the country charts with the song they co-wrote, 'Who Says You Can't Go Home,' a duet with Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles.

British born songwriter Roger Cook and partner Roger Greenaway, who performed briefly as a pop duo called David & Jonathan, wrote several country hits including Crystal Gayle's 'Livin' In These Troubled Times,' Don Williams' 'I Believe in You,' and George Strait's 'One Night at a Time. Pop hits the pair penned include the Hollies' 'Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)' and 'Doctor's Orders,' by Carol Douglas. In the early 1970s, the pair were also responsible for helping to create an iconic Coca-Cola jingle which had life a successful pop hit called 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (in Perfect Harmony).' Cook is also the father of CMT personality Katie Cook.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony will be held June 18 in New York City. Other inductees this year include Crosby, Stills and Nash and the Rascals' Felix Cavalieri and Eddie Brigati. They join previous inductees including Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Cole Porter, Bob Dylan and Burt Bacharach.

If ever there was a sign that we're approaching the end times, this is it.

Seriously - a songwriters hall of fame which still hasnt yet inducted Neil Young, George Harrison, Ray Davies or Pete Townshend, sees fit to induct instead ... Richie Sambora and that ace wordsmith Jon Bon Jovi?

Fuck me
pink.

Here's a list of previous inductees that these two talentless dillholes are now being compared to :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inductees_of_the_Songwriters_Hall_of_Fame

I'm sure George Gerswhin and Hoagy Carmichael will be turning in their graves at such illustrious company!

Time to shut up the shop I think.

Indeed, it's a dark day. It's not that we're jealous; we're horrified by the idea that such a pair of cliched writing hacks could earn this wonderful award. Cue Joey/Motels...  What the fuck?

From GTRM's link:

Jon Bon Jovi considers writing classic songs as a way of being remembered throughout time.

"It's the closest thing to immortality as we're ever gonna see here," he said.

There may be another way: the Songwriters Hall of Fame. And on Thursday night, the New Jersey rocker and his writing partner, Richie Sambora, joined Crosby, Stills & Nash for one of music's top honors.

Also honored at the induction ceremony, which represented the Songwriters Hall's 40th anniversary, was Jason Mraz, who was given the Hal David Starlight Award honoring a younger artist's promise. Mraz performed his hit single "I'm Yours" to the delight of the crowd of his more established peers.

"I believe in 20 years, or whatever, (he) is going to be in the Songwriters Hall of Fame," Rob Thomas said before the ceremony.

Other performers ranged from James Taylor to the cast of the recently revived "Hair," whose composers were also inducted.

Kara DioGuardi, the "American Idol" judge and songwriter, said the Songwriters Hall is important because composers still don't get enough recognition.

"A lot of the public still considers artists to be the only people that write their songs. They don't even think there could be another songwriter. They just think whoever is singing it, wrote it," she said.

Now does Kara DioGuardi actually think this will help the cause of songwriting?

I always knew this day would come.  And not just for Bon Jovi, but also other lame ass bands that don't hold a candle to any truly talented songwriters from the past (or present for that matter...what a decade of fucking waste...i hate the 80s).

It's a fucking shame that we will now be entering a time in which these types of bands will be receiving accolades like this as well as R&R HOF inductions, not that it matters, but are you gonna really take the Backstreet Boys seriously once they are inducted along side of the Stones.

I fucking cringe at the thought.

It was all ruined once they inducted Madonna and Grandmaster Flash.  Again, not that the whole thing mattered, but it used to be a place that you could walk into and take a look at some cool history.  And now it's just fucked.
