Thanks for sharing this, interesting to see Crosby, Stills & Nash footage from this event, never seen that before, even though it's a old video camera, besides Flying B.B. & J.Airplane, who else exactly played there? Santana? this was a huge festival like Woodstock, there must have been other bands booked to play.

It was free too.  Interesting that the filmer mentions that there was a rumor that there was a death threat against jagger  but it was unsubstantiated still an interesting angle into why the hells angels were so nasty that day

as much as i enjoy this movie it would have been great if they had filmed more daylight footage from other bands and included it into the film.

hopefully, someday they will come out with a directors cut edition like they did recently with the woodstock movie.  give some exta behind the scenes and bonus stuff.  bring it on, i say.

nice clip tumbled.

I'm going to predict that the fine folks at Stones Fan Asylum will one day charge $350 a ticket to see this footage along with a Q&A cocktail session with the photographer at a Blondie Chapin & "Special Guests" club show

Well I do believe Meredith Hunter may have been trying to shoot Mick since reports indicate he was whacked out of his head on drugs and pissed at his girlfriend for telling him she thought Mick was cute...he *was* charging the stage and pulled out a gun...Mick didn't seem to know about it until after, but Hunter may have been trying to take a shot at him...

My take on it was that the filmer thought there were rumors ahead of time amongst the hells angels that there were death threats so maybe they were in high alert and that's why they were so evil beating up everyone....   did meredith hunter make a threatening action and pull the gun before he was defending himself?  I guess we will never know.

He charged the stage and was beaten back by the Angels earlier in the Stones set (you can even see some of this in Gimme Shelter) and then when he charged the last time he pulled out the gun and that's when he was stabbed and stomped to death...

Not long before he's killed, you can clearly see Hunter near the stage. I mean, really near it. He gets a split second close up. Pretty easy to see him in his green suit.

Not at the expense of the glorious footage of the MSG shows.

I suppose in a 90 minute film earmarked for a cinema release, there's a limit to how much they're going to include, but I can see your point if there was some kind of director's cut.

However, they reissued the movie on DVD a few years ago with some bonus footage - although the Stones clips were covers. That would suggest that - as seems to be the norm with dealing with anything from the ABKCO era - there's some legal minefield about using old Jagger-Richards songs.

the whole weekend sounded like an epic.  from what i heard is that the stones waited several hours to come onstage since the last band played...it could very well have been 4-5 hours and people were getting totally wasted and stoned in the hot sun and were getting very edgy.  i don't think it was right of the stones to do this...they were lucky they made it out alive.

It was just a one day event - not a weekend.

You're right about them keeping the crowd waiting - dont know if it was as long as that though - Jagger's excuse was that "my make up looks better at night"  Blank Frigging Stare (as if that would have been noticed in a crowd of 300,000 where only a couple of thousand people would have had a decent look at his face). They were pretty notorious on that tour for going on very very late though - at a couple of early shows it was maybe about 4 hours and one of the LA Forum shows wasn't over until something like 3-4 am.

Not sure if the Dead not going on was the cause of the long gap before the Stones that led to more violence.  I can't imagine it being planned out that specifically amid such chaos.  Certainly a 30-minute Dark Star might have calmed down the crowd.  In hindsight, the Dead should have played.  They all admit it.

Right, after CSNY but before the Stones.   That would have given the sun the time to set so Jagger's makeup could look better under the lights (or so some cynical rendition of the story goes . . . )

The dead would have cheered things up for sure before the crowd was plunged back into evil SFTD which didn't help much. poor song choice for a simmering riot

Agree in hindsight, but it was played at every show of the tour and a highlight, perhaps THE highlight, of their set, which didn't change much at all throughout the tour.  Besides, SFTD is less evil than, er, tasteful.  Cry Cool
