This poll has probably already been on here before, but I was wondering what people thought about who was, is the best Musician on their instruments in The Stones, Charlie is one of the best drummers in rock, keith a fantastic rhythm guitarist & riff master, Mick T. a fantastic lead player that gave The Stones that direction in the short time he was in & produced those classic albums as we know them, Brian a all around talented musician who could pick up just about any instrument & pick a melody out of it, even if he's never played it before, but especially talented on slide & harp & rhythm G. I kept this just to the members who are or were The Stones, I didn't list any sidemen, although Daryl from what I know, isn't officially a member of The Stones yet.
Just one vote, & guests welcome.

He isn't, and never will be.

You could have added Stu though, who was.

Tough call. Being in doubt I played it safe and went with Watts.

Through his song writing, innovative guitar playing and pure musicianship, how can anyone not vote for Keith?

Brian Jones was a talented slide-guitarist, harmonica player and all round dabbler, but, not the greatest musician in the Stones.

Indeed. Ronnie was/is a fantastic guitarist - highly underrated in general, imo.

With age, alcohol, etc, I feel his talents have diminished somewhat, but every now and then; a touch of magic will still shine through. The fluency in his fills is still evident at times.

Anyone who doubts the man should check out his beautiful controlled soloing on Wild Horses from Knebworth, '76.

Yep - same applies to Bobby Keys, Blondie, Daryl, Lisa, Chuck et al.

No matter how great their contribution, they are just part of the side-show - hired hands.

Besides, they're not English anyway.

It looks like Mick T. is leading at 19, followed behind by Brian at 17 (sounds like I'm describing a horse race) any suggestions whether I should close this poll or leave it going for a while?

i'm a life-long M. Taylor defender,
but i have to pick keith....because while MT was beautiful, keith remains the soul of the stones' music..
his playing is something you can't copy, you can't put a finger on it, because its all feel, heart and soul.

Young Joe,

I just missed by minutes seeing our favorite rooster wigged, banana waving guitarist/artist and his lovely new muse at a gallery showing his work in Maui, HI. And then again, in LA.

sadly, my timing is off when it comes to catching a glimpse of Ronnie and Kit Kat

mick is the most underrated musician ....
not just on harmonica, but guitar and keyboards....
mick was the primary force on some girls,
like elvis, his playing is ragged, jangly, sometimes too sloppy - but always full of passion.
when he's playing, it becomes an extension of his voice.
my friend disagrees with this, but my friend is not a musician, i am.
sometimes non-musicians only look at the technical skills...but musicians recognize heart and soul and mick has it in spades.
just watch that scene in CS Blues where he's at the piano singing some half-done song?
those chords are beautiful, melodic and he's playing with so much feeling.....that's a real musician.

here is mick at 7:27.......pass through the jacking off scene and you have this beautiful chord progression...
and these are not basic chords, but minors and minor 7ths etc.....
unless you're a 'studied' pianist, these are the kind of chords you find on your own, but locating the bass notes and listening to the way it sounds....
they're sad, pretty chords.
i always wanted to hear more of this song...
