i remember keith talking about how aretha was as great a musician as she was a singer....
and about how most people don't know that.
that's what gave those songs such a great groove - she was throwing down on piano.
the "queen of soul" title has become such a cliche, and nowadays she's more famous for singing with george michael and the infamous inaugural hat..
but listening to those old atlantic recordings, she just blows you away.

it was always funny to me how someone like etta james (who i love) have more popularity among young people than aretha, just like the doors or the velvet underground have more cult popularity than the stones...
i guess these artists, aretha, the stones, are too institutionalized by the mainstream..

glencar, i agree about the long screeches,
they used to be full of raw emotion, but these days, they just seem indulgent and heartless.
she doesn't seem to have her heart in it -
i'm not sure what happens to these artists, like dylan....
they seem to lose thier urgency and young people are left to wonder,
'what's the big deal?'
dylan, at least, still writes, records, performs etc,
but aretha is just not doing anything...
i disagree about rick rubin, he could put her in a studio, sit her down at the piano and surround her with a great backing band, no frills..no strings, no attempts at modernization, just something raw.
