Alert Board Moderator about this Post!
the story of Muscle Shoals is a great one in music history.
these white boys put the wicked in wilson pickett, the funk in the staple singers and soul in aretha.
and it is their work with the queen that still resonates.

after six years at columbia and in new york, languishing in shmaltzy pop,
it took some good old boys from alabama to bring out the best in aretha.
she led these guys in the studio, and the rest is history.

this was where sknyrd got their start back in '70-'71.  they recorded many of their hits here.  in the song sweet home alabama there is a line that goes...now muscle shoals have got the swampers and they've been known to sing a song or two.  the swampers were the 3 guys that ran the joint.  these times must have been great

does anyone know if this building is still standing and in operation?

there is a very brief scene in gimme shelter of the stones leaving the building.

Are you fucking serious?

The Swampers were four guys - Barry Beckett (keyboards), Roger Hawkins (drums), Jimmy Johnson (guitar) and David Hood (bass).

The original studio @ 3614 Jackson Highway in Sheffield AL is still there...
