main riff?  To me sounds like A, Amaj7, D, Dm.  I'll try with my electric later.

You mean you hear an actual buzz? That could mean that the string is broken or that the action is screwed up. If you haven't had a setup done in a while it might be a good idea to do that.

That Am7 is not quite right, as you suspect.

As suggested above, think of it as an Amaj7 in the open position -- and try a hammer-on between the B and C# notes on the second string.

Btw: The little turnaround riff he does on the diminished chord eventually became the basis for the (in these parts, hated) "Any Way You Look At It."

Good effort. Try this, though: When you're playing the A chord, make it a -sus: leave the second string open and ring out the B note. After the Amaj7, you're doing a D major. Instead, you want a Dmaj7: xx0222

And the diminished turnaround lick is not quite right. Start it by playing the low E string and fretting the F note of the first fret. Then go the thing at the top, like you were doing it.

thanks for the tips
will try the Asus and Dmaj7
geez its such a beautiful song
would love to nail it
some of those chords Keef plays are just sublime
that Amaj7 is such a cool sounding chord

an Aussie artist ( Richard Clapton ) uses that chord heaps, esp after a full A

i might even try a vocal tomorrow, i can sing along OK to it in the car .....

Ouch!

One more thing: On the D-dim chord, try pulling off between the fretted F note and the open-stringed E on the first string. It sort of answers the E to F notes on the low side of the chord. ... Keith has always loved those bass-y notes. One of my favorites is in the intro of "Torn and Frayed": after the D chord, how he just hits that lone low E note.
