For the first time, the entire Rolling Stones catalogue will be with one company, following Mick`s flick from Virgin to Universal Music.

Universal will begin a roll-out of the entire Stones catalogue from ‘Sticky Finger’ through to ‘A Bigger Bang’ totally remastered.

The first batch featuring ‘Sticky Fingers’, ‘Goats Head Soap’, ‘It’s Only Rock N Roll’ and ‘Black and Blue’ will be released on May 8.

On June 12, ‘Some Girls, ‘Emotional Rescue’, ‘Tattoo You’ and ‘Undercover’ will be reissued.

Then on July 17, ‘Dirty Work’, ‘Steel Wheels’, ‘Voodoo Lounge’, Bridges To Babylon’ and ‘A Bigger Bang’ will be back on the shelves.

‘Exile On Main Street’ is being held back for its own special release later in the year.

Max Hole of Universal said in a statement “The Rolling Stones redefined music. In mine, there's as much chance of Brian playing on the next tour as there is of that happening...

Much more chance of 'Ladies & Gentlemen' being released with though - although I dont think theres much likelihood of that happening either.

"Remastered"

I am sick to death of that term and of music companies trying to get me to cough up my meager dollars to buy yet another "better (or BEST) sounding" version of the same damn song I have..

Give me New tunes damn it!!

Unreleased tunes-I just might bite -unless it is the same bootleg stuff we already own Wink

At least its CD size instead of LP.

I hope theyve made Olga prettier at least.

Personally I'm more concerned with the traumatic potential of being able to hear 'Hold Back' clearer than it was before.  you made a grown man cry

Wow... so the whole "Deluxe Edition" thing was just a crock.

This is ri-godddamn-diculous.

You know, I picked up the Grateful Dead's latest vault release today: To Terrapin: Hartford '77. And I wondered aloud, "You know, these guys aren't even technically together any more, but they treat their fans very, very well with these vault releases. What's the Rolling Stones' fucking problem?"

Good question. I'm not a Dead fan by ANY MEANS but they do better by their fans. Although really, they should include soap bars with their new releases.

I'm amazed how poorly their back catalogue sells. Trying to get "new" fans (fat chance) without making the old records/cd's different to some one's dad or older sibling (and yeah, i guess grand dad) is dumb. Just re-hashing it is not going to do anything. THE WHO got it perfect with their re-releases.

Unless these are the most amazing re-mixes ever heard.

Which i doubt.

well, its a bit of a different scenario because the Stones are still (supposedly) a 'working band' plus the Dead have always been primarily focussed towards live releases to showcase their music more than studio albums.

However, being thrown a few crumbs now and again would be nice. Like what Dylan has done. Im not a Dead fan either but when it comes to following a band's live music, their fans get a better deal than anyone.

In the new issue of 'Uncut' out today, theyve reviewed a new Dead live album, covering their three seminal Winterland performances from November 1973.

All three nights are included (only the encore from night 1 is missing) and its on NINE cds!!

Imagine a run of classic Stones shows being covered in such depth - MSG '72 for starters.

I'm honestly surprised thats given so much emphasis, corgi. Who in their 60's plays and sings better than they did in their 20's?

I can see your point but I dont think its a big deal. After all, the people who were going to see the Stones in 1972 are not - for the most part - still going to see them now. Most fans from 1972 are pretty oblivious to what the band sound like in concert in 2009 (or rather 2007) and dont care to know either. And probably vice versa. Most people attending Stones shows now couldnt even name the guitarist that Ronnie Wood replaced, and I was stunned on the last tour to read interviews with 'fans' who had travelled across continents to see the opening night in Boston and yet when asked about Brian Jones had never even heard of him.

"sings better"...almost no one

"plays better"?  plenty--Fripp and Townshend and Beck and Dickie Betts and Jorma and Neil Young and many others who did not blot out their last two decades in a blur of Sunkist/vodka beverages and mounds of blow.....

Fair point, Jizzy - Chairman Pete and Shakey certainly sprung to mind for me as well.

Manual dexterity largely doesnt improve with age though, even though technique should with years of practice.

Some more gossip on the Exile remaster, via Halup on IORR (he was the guy who Don Was played the just mastered 'She Saw Me Coming' for on his car hi-fi four years ago on the night 'A Bigger Bang' had just been finished)

I talked to Don Was 2 1/2 weeks ago after a charity show he performed at with Glenn Frey at the Roxy in Los Angeles. He told me he has been working on the Exile deluxe edition and indicated that it will include unreleased tracks. He said there's a lot of songs they are going through. Was indicated nothing about the deluxe edition including a DVD, but maybe he's not involved with that part of it.

We also talked about A Bigger Bang and he said he really tried to convince Mick and Keith to release it as a 12 song album. He also feels that from all the outtakes since he began working with them in 1993, that there's 2 albums worth of good material. Was didn't say it, but maybe they will compile a Tattoo You like album out of that for future release and maybe a tour could come on the heels of that?

Hmmm, unreleased tracks...I knew it wouldn't be a CS Blues DVD since that cannot be shown without the director present due to a court ruling.  I was holding out hope for L&G although honestly, it doesn't matter since most of us have that on boot DVD anyway....

Unless it's something spectacular, I think I'll have to pass on these (I know I won't buy GHS...censored Star Star!)...

I'm surprised it's Exile being held back...even though it's a fan favorite, Mick has never cared for it at all...

No kidding?  I remember my cassette back in high school had that extremely crude overdub to obscure the word pussy.  Used to blast that baby in my yellow 74 Plymouth Gold Duster, which had a huge trunk and Jensen triaxial speakers.  Ugliest damn car ever made.  My hearing is what it is today in part because of that car.

Unbelievable in this day and age!  I wonder why?

In any case, I'm very happy with my Mickboy remaster Dancing So Free for all my GHS-related needs.  (You got that?)

Yeah I don't understand why they are releasing the censored Star Star for two reasons:

1) In this day and age, it's tame compared to what's released on a daily basis now...

2) THEY ALREADY RELEASED THE UNCENSORED VERSION ON THE EARLY-90s REMASTER...

so why reverse it now?  Makes no sense...

Since this was only on the US version of GHS, it is the first time it has been on CD... regardless, don't need it, and I thought I was a completist...

For what it's worth.  I rather like the sound on the remastered Black & Blue disc.  I know most are not happy with SF, but the sound in my car on that disc was very much in your face, kinda raunchy.  Made me feel young and dirty.

the interest in these among audiophiles and die-hards is minimal, so the bravest of us, with money to burn are our only hope. Personally, unless these were said to be stellar, definitve type releases, I really can't buy these albums again. I have bought some of these like SF, about 6 times in my life. My money is going to be spent on something I never owned before, new Green Day, which is like a cross between Quadrophenia meets Gozdzilla and the new Deluxe Rancid album due out in two more weeks, which I have heard all the way through, and was blown away. I put on my Some Girls record the other day, 1994 version, and told myself, if this is the best mastering I can afford, I'm fine with this. I'm only interested in new to me stuff or definitve mastering. Like on the Who Deluxe of Sell Out, now that was money well spent!

^Agreed, I'm tired of re-buying shit I've had for years.  I've heard these new Stones masters are good, but not leaps beyond what we already have.  And the packaging/album art is no better, so I'll save my $$ for new music, as you said...

Another bit of info on the Exile reissue. Content is still unconfirmed, but at least now we have a release date plus verification of the titles of three of the previously unreleased songs - none of which have ever circulated, and two of which have never even been rumoured.

From the new issue of 'Uncut' (February 2010) in their 'Incoming' feature on upcoming new releases :

The long-awaited remastering of The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterpiece Exile On Main Street will be released on April 12, including three previously unreleased songs from the Exile sessions, "Following The River", "Plunder My Soul" and "Sophia Loren"

April 12 is (I think) the 39th anniversary of the original release date. 'Sophia Loren' is the only one of those three songs whose title is known to collectors - although no version of it has ever been bootlegged. No word yet on what else is to be included in the reissue, or whether or not there's more than 3 unreleased songs (No doubt there'll be several alternate versions of the released songs as well and a DVD documentary is strongly rumoured too)

Thanks for posting, G.

A remastered version on one disc, with the three unreleased songs and Don Was tweaked out-takes on the other?
And when/if they tour in 2010, might this be what they'll be supporting, not a new album?

Personally, if it means a healthy dollop of 'Exile' every night, I'm all over that...

I know I have my wish list... the single mix versions and would love to see Gimme Lil Drink (early lovin' cup) make it... although, that was recorded when Klein still owned them... so who knows if it is possible or not... I didn't even know there were those 3 other songs, new to me for sure...

wouldn't it be 38th anniversiary?

I'm not sure it actually suggests these will be the only unreleased songs. It's a bit vague. There may be more, but I'm not sure how many finished songs there were. Exile, as you know, derives from a bit of a hotch-potch of recordings going back over a couple of years and not that much of it was actually recorded at Nellcote, with details of what WAS cut there being  pretty sketchy.

A good thing though is that there are at least three songs which have never been bootlegged before in any form, and two of them which have never even been rumoured to exist. The latter must surely be a good sign that there's other finished material in their vaults which we're unaware of.

My own guess - and its no more than a guess - is that disc 1 will be the remaster of the original 18-track album. In the same style as the other Universal remasters, they wont add on unreleased songs as 'filler' on that disc. I think they'll then devote a separate disc to unreleased material - some unreleased songs, but mostly alternate versions of the songs which made the album, and that a third disc will be a DVD. A documentary DVD has already been strongly rumoured, but we can surely hope for a fourth disc consisting of something like the long awaited DVD release of 'Ladies and Gentlemen'.

I seriously doubt that they'll see this release as their excuse to tour. Its not even an album that Jagger is that fond of, it didnt sell that well and its not choc-full of hits - not exactly a good indication that they'd be likely to play large chunks of it for the corporate tourists that they're aiming for these days.

Oh, I also read yesterday in a list of upcoming book releases for 2010 that Keith's autobiography - which the newspaper said was called "My Life - Keith Richards" (a bland title if ever I heard one and one which I assume is a working title) is scheduled to be released in October 2010.

Presumably timed to coincide with the tour and to be in the shops in time for Christmas.

Yes! I meant to correct that. Thanks.

There's a good interview with Jody Klein by Dean Goodman in the latest issue of IORR magazine about the Ya-Ya's reissue. It would appear that co operation between ABKCO and the Stones has been quite good in recent years. I dont really think it'd be a problem.

Well, the release date does dovetail with the rumored start of the tour.

Speaking as a non-tourist, I'd be happy if the set includes more songs from their putative career peak, rather than stuff from a new album that they'll eventually distance themselves from, à la ABB.

Coachella is rumored for April. 'Course it is just a rumor.

If Ronnie's not careful he might sleep through the press conference introducing his replacement...

As much as  I sense sarcasm... I have a feeling if Exile does well, they will consider deluxe versions of other records, especially the popular ones like Some Girls, and Sticky Fingers... We shall see... Fingers crossed.

I think the article is just highlighting three songs specifically because they've been given that information and its songs that no one outside the Stones camp has ever heard.

I'd be disappointed if the only audio material we got was 3 songs to fill out an 80-minute CD, but I really don't think that this project was delayed for months just so Mick and Keith could go through a lot of old tapes and give Don Was a paltry three songs to mix.

I would imagine that most of what is made available would be alternate versions of some of the 18 songs we already have.

To get at least three songs that have never been circulated before in any form - two of which have never even been known to exist - is quite remarkable I think. Also a good sign for future archive releases that there appear to be more completed songs in the vaults that Stones historians have never even heard of.

I don't imagine there were a lot of songs finished for Exile that weren't released. After all, the Stones were putting out an album every year or so at this point, and this one was an 18-track double album which came out only a year after their previous release. As well as that, the album was assembled from a collection of new songs cut at Nellcote plus songs originally written and recorded during sessions for Let it Bleed and Sticky Fingers in 1969-70.

He hasn't chipped in on this thread so far, so I'll do it for him.

UrbanSteel mentioned on IORR that in the last few days Promotone (ie, The Rolling Stones) have contacted him demanding he remove all the footage from the movie 'Ladies & Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones' which he has uploaded to Youtube.

He has something like 950 other Stones clips on Youtube, yet this was the only material they have asked him to remove.

Make of that what you will.

Wow, that's quite some news...I did remember "Sophia Loren" from Karnbach's book from 1997 so I went to dig it out...

...and found two other songs listed : 'Fragile" - "I'm not signifying".

Looking at my very own http://stones.servebeer.com/Trax/1970.htm compilation I didn't find anything else.

It can't  be ruled out that these two "unknown songs" got new and sexier titles for the release, maybe their lyrics will be some kind of indication. I find it a bit odd that Karnbach would have missed two full songs since he was apparently given access to the session logs and possibly tapes but the fact he never once gave any info on unbootlegged songs indicates he didn't or that he was "told" not to...

In any case, let's hope it's not another case of "Extreme Western Grip" and "Well Well" from the supposedly (according to Keith) terrific 2002 sessions in Paris (Suresnes actually).

I've never heard Fragile, but i have head I ain't signifying....

This is great news. It would be a crime not to include "Good time women" which i love. Hell, it could be a single! Non-fans could go "I've heard that some where before, but i cant put my finger on it'.

lol

I also have a very, very long version of Tumbling Dice somewhere. It goes for 18 minutes or something.

I have always doubted about the so-called amount of unheard of tracks. But maybe, just maybe, there is a bit of truth to it.

An 18 minute "Tumbling Dice" ? An extended 1972 Montreux jam ?

"I ain't signifying" has sometimes been listed as "Ain't Gonna Lie", Karnbach lists them both.

Depends when you consider the 'Exile' sessions to have started. Very little of  'Sticky Fingers' (released April 1971) was started after July 1970 when the band broke for a few weeks before the European Tour. The final sessions in October of that year were mostly overdubs with the exception of Moonlight Mile and Sway. By that stage a lot of the songs that ended up on Exile 18 months later had begun to be worked on. I've always considered 'Travellin' Man' an Exile outtake, even though it probably dates from October 1970. It was certainly recorded AFTER Good Time Women.

If all goes well the Exile-reissue will be the event of the year for me. Having said that: how can the perfect album sound even better?

@gazza - good point that period was very creative and they often say they don't know wha ended on what between LIB, SF and Exile, well especially Mick who's known not to think mch of Exile...

Had missed this on Nico's site : "Sophia Loren (MJ/KR) -unverified long, slow rocker with piano and brass"

Looks like it leakew to the "stone collectors royalty" like Gangster's Maul in 1998, because no one apart from Karnbach had ever mentionned it AFAIK and he gave no details.

I've never believed Mick's statements on Exile. And Rembrandt denounced his masterpiece too so he's in good company.

I'm sure this has been discussed here, but i'd assumed the "unreleased tracks" were just the shit we've already heard on boots...
but with names like "Plunder my Soul", Following the River" and especially, "Sophia Loren", my heart is just all a-flutter....
Could this be a major event in Stonesdom or just another crumb?
Just when you think nothing could be new, Jagger pulls something out of his ass....

The songs recorded for Exile stretched back over multiple sessions covering a period of a couple of years, Texile. I think it would be a bit pessimistic to just assume that all we'd get was a sonically improved version of the same 90 minutes or so of music that's circulated on various bootlegs. Every major act who has released studio archive releases down the years has managed to put out plenty of material that hadn't been bootlegged and in many cases didn't even know existed.

Have to say I didn't expect any new/previously unheard of TITLES to be unearthed. And the nme.com story the other today regarding the 2010 tour mentions 'a host of unreleased songs' including the three which have been specifically named. Whether that means more actual outtakes or merely alternate versions of released tracks is conjecture at the minute. Probably the latter, but I'm hopeful there'll be several alternate takes which we haven't heard before.

'Travellin' Man' with a finished vocal take would be something to hear.

On Nico's site, 'unverified' can mean either its existence is speculative or that it exists but has never circulated.

The existence of that track has been known now for 30 years or more. It's just never circulated. I'm pretty sure its mentioned in the studio chronology part of David Dalton's "The First Twenty Years" book. Karnbach may have mentioned it based on seeing studio logs, but that doesnt necessarily mean he heard it.

Wasn't aware of that title, don't think it's in ME's books either (will check) although now that you mention it I wonder if it wasn't listed in that fake bootleg in Hot Wacks, or was it "Something Brigitte Bardot", might be confusing the actresses!

What puzzles me is the "slow rocker with piano and brass" description - that means someone must have heard it, or an insider (Wyman ?) gave some info in an interview. I for one have never seen that hinted elsewhere.

Thanks for the info Gazza....i'm actually excited about this news....
and Teiz,, i agree that Jagger doth protest too much about Exile -
In response to a general consensus, Jagger will always play devil's advocate...

"Something Brigitte Bardot" (aka 'Something BB') dates from the sessions at RCA Studios, Hollywood in August 1966. It's a 'Between The Buttons' outtake.

Never circulated, but it's existence has been known for some time. Again, I first saw it mentioned in the sessionography listed in David Dalton's 1982 book "The First Twenty Years".

He will do what they tell him to do, and he doesn't say no to a paycheck from The Stones... Would you?

I'm not to happy about Don Was either. IMO he proved himself unworthy of producing a Stones album with ABB. A good producer would've talked the boys out of a lame record like that. But I guess it's hard to stand up to Mick and/or Keef. Rubin could do it..

And it produced the best Stones related record this side of...Tattoo You ? And if you go back to a "real" album, Exile ? B2B was pretty good too, but Was didn't produce much on there. Some will say the buck stops at Mick and Keith and if the songs are not that good the producer can't do much about it...other than rejecting them (like Goodrich did for Macca's Chaos), but he certainly could have given them better input on the production and the playing. Since Keith is pretty much "out of commission", it's obvious ABB needed a more competent guitar player than Mick. Waddy Wachtel's presence on B2B certainly helped a lot.

Was is just so inneffective.
He doesn't challenge them...
and at this point in their career - seemingly no inspiration and no hunger etc - they need someone to push a little.
He may as well be Matt Clifford.....
For the life of me, how did Was get the job?
the dinosaur song? I know he was a 'producer' and he pops up all the time on music docs, but i fail to see what he has to offer that could justify such a long association with the Stones...

He could, but after telling Mick stuff he didnt want to hear during the 'Wandering Spirit' sessions, he'll never get the chance to.

You'd think that Mick would be happy that he helped him produce hist best album this side of the "magic 4"...I remember reading that Ahmet Ertegun had told Mick to go back to work on WS a couple of time too (it came out on Atlantic). Maybe it's the Ahmet+Rubin coalition that got the better of Mick !

well, its a two-way thing. The Stones probably dont want to work with Rubin because neither Mick or Keith could deal with his 'pushy' style - and he probably wouldnt be in a hurry to produce them either.

He's on record as saying that the experience of producing Jagger wasn't particularly positive because Mick is so used to being surrounded by psychophants who tell him his shit doesn't stink that he found it hard to believe a producer would have the balls to say to him "I think you're capable of better than this.."

Was' involvement in the Exile reissue is, as far as I know, merely confined to mixing the unreleased material.

I doubt it'll matter that much to be honest.

No shit...
Mick has to know WS is his best work since TY.
Artists are supposed to like to be challenged..
You would think that his ego would at least recognize that.
The Stones need someone to remind them of who they are/were and demand they measure up...

Has anyone heard the remastered Voodoo Lounge disc, I wonder if it sounds any better than the 15 year old version I have, which sounds a tad "tinny" to me

Yeah I read about that. Rubin made some remarks about Mick being surrounded by ass-kissers instead of folks who want to make a great album in Uncut a few years back. A pity. But Mick can't be tone deaf right? I mean: Wandering Spirit just sounds better than most of the other recent stuff. And it ages well: the album still sounds fresh.

Mick's certainly not tone deaf (even if he thinks Exile is overrated), but he's probably more concerned these days at having his ego stroked than he is about going along with some uppity producer's ideas of what makes a good record.

And I shudder to think how Keith would react to Rubin's hands-on style. Probably with knives.

Ego first, quality next..I guess almost 50 years of fame does that to people. A pity though. I'm sure Rick Rubin would be able to help the Stones with some great recordings before the band calls it quits, which is bound to happen somewhere in this decade.

Thanks to Jimmy Phelge on IORR for finding this and to LieB for the Google Translation

Mick Jagger has given a new interview to La Republicca newspaper in Italy, giving more details about the Exile reissue (11 songs!)

The original Italian text :

Cominciamo da Exile On Main St., che verrà ripubblicato.
"Ho mixato 11 brani inediti. Alcuni sono piuttosto interessanti (ride, "risucchiando" la saliva, ndr)".

Per esempio Following The River...
"Sì, è una ballata al piano".

Che parla di un uomo che lascia una donna.
"Esatto (ride, ndr)".

E Plunder My Soul, in cui una donna lascia un uomo. Anche qui c'è il piano, ma è più rock.
"Diciamo che è più una commedia...".

Poi, Sophia Loren. Come mai questo titolo?
"È solo un titolo in lavorazione, non la chiameremo così. Per ora è così solo per attrarre le persone... (ride, ndr)".

Come avete scoperto queste tracce?

"No, per niente.

Come album, sta insieme piuttosto bene.

Quali erano i tuoi eroi?
"Elvis Presley e Little Richard: quest'ultimo, lo idolatravo. Per me era fantastico.

"I Rolling Stones erano così ingenui agli inizi. Ma timido, no, io non lo sono mai stato".

Ci avrei scommesso.
"Lo so (ride, ndr)".

"Oh, no, non credo proprio. Però, hai rastrellato per bene in Internet sul mio conto! (ride, ndr)".

A volte è divertente.

"No.

(ride, ndr)".

Google translation

We start from Exile On Main St., which will be republished.
"I have mixed 11 unreleased tracks. Some are quite interesting (laughs, sucks the saliva, ndr)".

For example Following The River ...
"Yes, it's a piano ballad.

What about a man leaving a woman.
"Yeah (laughs)."

And Plunder My Soul, in which a woman leaves a man. Also here is the plan, but more rock.
"We say that it is more a comedy ...".

Then, Sophia Loren. Why this title?
"It's just a working title, do not call it that. For now it is so only to attract people ... (laughs)."

How did you discover these traces? Because for so long remained in the archives?
"When the record company asked me if I wanted to republish Exile On Main St., asked some" experts "by the Rolling Stones to send all demos available. They were bootlegs. While listening to them for the first time I said "Wait a minute, but these things do not come from the same period (Exile On Main St., 1972, note), no, these were taken to another place, probably in the late 70s, maybe early 80s. .. ".

In practice you forgot you had it?
"No, not at all. I had to understand just exactly when it was done, for Exile On Main St., was not recorded at once, but within three years. So I had to go back in time with the mind and seek additional tracks worthy of being published. I listened to tapes on tape. "

There is a statement of the time stating that the disk you did not like. You said: "This new album is crazy. There are so many different tracks. It's very rock & roll, but I did not mean a thing. I am the person most experimental of the group, I do not like to do and redo the same thing."
"Crap. It is not true."

Okay, but how you feel today?
"The good thing about this disc is that it's interesting when seen as a whole work in its integrity (the only double album by the Rolling Stones, ed). Its main feature is that it has many tracks" accessible. "L ' only song that has been successful and Tumbling Dice, but otherwise there were so many catchy songs like "Some Girls (1978, ed). The songs of Exile were still well received at the time. It is a very interesting album, with so many different musical styles, blues, a bit 'of country, a little' rock & roll and a little 'something that can not be put into a category. Let's say that represents well the good extension degi Stones music that is eclectic because had eclectic influences. as an album, is set pretty well. So, yes, I like it, although I do not ever listen. "

Before I spoke of "going back in time." You once said that "you must be careful not to remain trapped in the past or is likely to understand, the things around you change." The past is a trap for you?
"I say that you should have seen your past stop you from doing so much more. Nobody wants to be trapped naturally in the past, but I quite like flipping between the old things, return them to the light and see how and what is left today . The truth, to return to Exile, is that the record has so much begged me to pull out of these things that I gave. My initial reaction was: "I do not really care about any of this stuff, I will not try anything . But they insisted: "Oh, favoreee, you can only give a quick glance, we are confident that there is something good ..." and so in the end it was really fun doing this research. It was like rummaging in the attic, groom in a trunk of old clothes and exclaim, "Oh, look at this! Once I wore it! I can not believe it! "(He says, raising his hands in the air as if holding an imaginary dress, ndr)".

The first time you went on stage she was 19. But you always said to hear a singer.
"I've always liked singing and I always sang, but I never thought you could be a singer. Not a professional singer, just for fun. One thing to do during the holidays."

You were safe inside you can do better than the singers that you admire?
"Eventually, yes. I knew I could be like them. Even if your heroes are always heroes. Think it's too hard to be like them, but eventually you realize that it is not so."

What were your heroes?
"Elvis Presley and Little Richard: the latter, idolized him. For me it was fantastic. I was very lucky because the first tour by the Rolling Stones was precisely with Little Richard. I watched him every night, so closely, so closely in details ... He was really nice to me. He liked the enthusiasm of young boys. He cared about me, behind me and gave me lots of ideas. I watched him interact with the public, to understand how do. He gave everything he could to the public. You can go in front of people, just play and healthy, because sometimes the performers are quite timid, or interact with them and bring them to the excitement. I learned so, looking at him and James Brown . Behold excite the public: this is the best thing ESIB.

It's hard to think of yourself as a shy performer, even just in its infancy.
"The Rolling Stones were so naive at the beginning. But shy, no, I have never been."

I would bet.
"I know (laughs)."

When he came out Aftermath (1966, ndr) was starting the season of flower children. But that record was pretty tough: there were songs like "Stupid Girl" and "Under My Thumb" that conflict with the dream of peace and love.
"I remember only that it was entirely filmed in Los Angeles in '65. I consider it a legacy of ingenuity of the early 60".

The issues do not seem so naive. You also been criticized for the contents of that disk.
"Not so much ...".

Singing of "foolish boy." Feminists do not have attacked?
"So, so. At that time, the feminist movement was still weak. If we had done ten years later would have been worse."

The hippie movement meant something to you?
"I always thought it was a big shit. Sure, there were some interesting things in the hippie movement, but if we were to be critical, we could say that it was just a silly trend and that did not mean anything. If we were to look at hippie movement within its historical context, we would say that was an effort to change the rules of an old society. For example, in England there are many people who live like this, who choose a lifestyle that is "alternative" which is now was accepted by the mainstream lifestyle. They have their festivals, often associated with pagan beliefs in Great Britain, and are a subset of society. hippies still exist, go to Glastonbury and live for a while 'as a hippie. But it is not my style, no? ".

It is true that shortly before forming the Rolling Stones were doing the ice cream?
"I did it, sells it alone. And it was also of very bad quality! It was a summer job. I always just did odd jobs, I never had a real job (laughs)."

You are very lucky.
(Chuckles, ed)

I read a news story that said that you wanted to buy a truck peddler of ice cream.
"Oh, no, do not think so. But, you've raked for good in the Internet on my account! (Laughs)."

Sometimes it's fun. Were struggling with two mobile phones before. You're not a technical person?
"I think for how the music business today, it is necessary to be so. I still always have been. For example, in the studio there are enormous and complex machines and I like to work ...".

I speak of the technology useful for the information. Computer#$%&, as I know, look in Google your name on the internet ...
"I looked for my name on Google (a very serious voice said, ndr). This is a really awful thing to do. Never search your name on Google! I know some actors who do, but not a good idea" .

Why?
"An actor friend of mine starts every day trying their name on Google. Then, still upset for several hours, because he finds horrible things about themselves. Especially now that some people on a lot has been said or written, then they jump out of the most absurd, and there are many people who write on subjects of which he knows nothing. You should not do. Never search for your name on Google. "

Since Keith has been dropped from the famous coconut tree ...
"Yeah (voice against, ndr)".

... began to talk about death more relaxed. Have you ever had any near death experience?
"No. I'm not even ever fallen from the pantry (laughs)."

You have fear?
"I think all they have."

In Sway (published in Italy by Einaudi, ed), the best-selling novel about the Rolling Stones "Satanic", there are tremendous dialogues among yourselves. What do you think?
"I read a review that talked about evil, so I did not. God, what books embarrassing! But you know what is the most ridiculous? Surely our real conversations are much more dire than those invented here! (Laughs) .

My own interpretation of the translation of the first question :

Q - Lets start by talking about Exile On Main Street, which is being reissued.

A - There are 11 mixed, unreleased tracks - some are quite interesting!

..and this comment almost defies belief :

"When the record company asked me if I wanted to republish Exile On Main St., asked some" experts "by the Rolling Stones to send all demos available. They were bootlegs. While listening to them for the first time I said "Wait a minute, but these things do not come from the same period (Exile On Main St., 1972, note), no, these were taken to another place, probably in the late 70s, maybe early 80s. .. When you read that and read the hopelessly researched sleevenotes for Rarities, it gives you great confidence in the capabilities of the sort of 'experts' the Stones entrust to plunder their archives, doesn't it?

I've always questioned why not give Wyman the job of writing about these type of things, producing a video chrono?  Who could talk to the Stones better, add historical footnotes better & still keep a finger in the action?  Still, the info on this songs gets one crazed for the release.   Thanks for passing this along.

It's also pretty encouraging to read that, after his initial reluctance, Mick seemed to actually enjoy dipping into the band's archives once he got started.  Maybe a good omen for the future.

Incidentally, thats the first of a two-part interview. The second part will be published on February 15th.

I know much is lost in the translation, but sounds like the same Mick mumbo-jimbo - he acts so removed from his own life and work....
But this Exile thing is very promising.

Can't vouch for the validity of this one, but here goes..

Latest rumour doing the rounds is that in addition to the completed but previously unreleased songs being included in the deluxe version of 'Exile', the band have decided to add a few touches to a few of the unreleased songs which weren't quite finished .......

and that a certain former guitarist who was in the band when the album was recorded has got the call to contribute to the parts that are being overdubbed....

If all this does pan out I hope they do a proper job of marketing this. Imagine Exile making it to #1 in this day and age? That would be so sweet and hopefully encourage further "vaulting"

Doubt theres much chance of it selling enough to trouble the upper reaches of the charts, in fairness. Especially as we're looking at a multi disc release which may include a DVD. Its not exactly going to sell for the price of a regular CD.

A few guitar parts on unfinished songs that would have otherwise been left unheard in the vaults is ok (as long as there's still going to be COMPLETED songs left as they were recorded), but I just hope to hell Jagger isnt adding new lead vocals to unfinished songs that are forty years old. That idea is just horrible.

Can't say that link fills me with much confidence, but given their current relations with Ronnie and the fact that all known recent Stones "activity" has focused on revisiting 1969-1972, we can dream can't we?  Even if it only amounts to a few studio overdub sessions, anything that involves the Stones+Mick Taylor would have my interest much more than another tour.

More realistically though, my highest hopes for this set are that it includes Ladies & Gentlemen as a bonus.

Wow that's some news ! In the studio with Mick T. !

Honestly I can't see how Mick wouldn't have to redo vocals, based on all the "unreleased songs we've heard, the vocals are generally "work in progress" vocals, so what's the chance of finished vocals having been recorded at the time ?

Other than Tattoo You, the only example I know of where Mick went in and redid the vocals for an old track was for "So Young" from 1977/78 that was used as a B-Side for a Voodoo Lounge single (LIS I think). It didn't sound bad, and not that different from the vocal on the old outtake. For those wondering why the heck they dug that one out, it's because Virgin had toyed with the idea of adding unreleased tracks to the 1994 reissues and Mick had spent some time at the Power Station (or RPM) in NYC in 12/1993. He actually mentioned in an AOL interview that he'd worked on Fiji Jim too. This info came from Philippe Manoeuvre of Rock and Folk in the April or May of 1994 issue, I probably still have it somewhere. I've never seen it mentioned elsewhere strangely enough, but he's a reliable source and it's certainly consistent with "So Young" coming out of the dark.

Some thoughts on the 'Exile' remaster:

The DVD won't be 'Ladies and Gentlemen...'. Too much money to be made as a stand-alone DVD release.
Most likely the DVD will be a 'making of' thingy with lots of talking heads and some snippets of live stuff from the STP tour (maybe a couple shots from 'Ladies and Gents'); lots of brief clips of Capote and Warhol and a few low- res shots from 'Cocksucker Blues'. Standard rock doc type stuff.

Not looking forward to M Taylor doing some new overdubs (any more than Jagger vocals), unless Jagger or Richards are physically present to direct him.

Here's hoping they'll add a cleaned up "Good Time Women" and they extended version of "loving Cup" with that great extended outtro (go Charlie!). "Traveling Man" and the like wouldn't really add much for me.

I can see some tracks from the lost '72 live album from the Spectrum in Philly (not the whole thing with the stuff from Texas, of course; that would make too much sense and make too many people happy- we can't have that).

Quote:
Jagger has dispatched Matt Clifford to a studio with nine unfinished songs for Mick Taylor to put overdubs on

I never understood why he'd been booted from the Stones, Keith doesn't like him?

There were Exile tracks that Jagger did with Taylor sans keith though. The whole thing is weird, but it is the Stones we're discussing!

Mick and Mick had written 11 tracks for Exile? Odd, wonder if that's not stuff like Separately, Potted Shrimp, etc...

I dont think its suggesting that the two Micks wrote a lot of songs together (which they didnt)

Clifford still does a lot of technical stuff with Jagger, especially when he's demoing. He's credited on A Bigger Bang.

'Separately' was a GHS track, so it comes from after 'Exile'.

That's true, I'm wondering if they haven't rounded a bunch of ureleased stuff from the 1970-1972 period though to throw it in there; other than a few die-hards no one would know the difference anyway, we'll see!

Yes Clifford stayed closely associated with Mick although it seems something happened during the recording of WS as an early 1992 Vanity Fair article had Mick and Matt playing an early version of "Don't Tear Me Up" and he was described as Mick's "musical aide de camp" (or something like that), but on WS I think he only ended up getting credited on "Angel in My Heart".

There's very little known about what was recorded at Nellcote (as tends to be the case when recording in someone's home with a mobile recording unit as opposed to a 'regular' studio where you'd imagine studio logs would be a bit easier to track down). Barely half of Exile was recorded at those sessions (and even then, most of those songs werent finished until they went to LA and got various session musicians to add their parts), so you'd imagine that most of what was recorded for Exile but which ISN'T documented somewhere would come from Nellcote - and that as they recorded there on and off for about 3 months, there's a fair chance there would be a few more songs.

I'm just worried about Dan Wasas, Matt Cliffords and yes, even the Mick Jaggers messing with the original material from those sessions.
Exile was like the culmination of everything the stones had been up to that point: musically, personally, thier relationships - it is a product of that particular time in their history....
Apart from the 'cleaning' up the tracks, the idea of any other tinkering troubles me....

Seems the second part of this interview is available now in the 'XL' supplement of this newspaper, just out today

According to maumau on IORR, there's nothing more about the Exile reissue in it, but if anyone can get a link or a transcript with a translation, please post it.

More 'Exile' reissue gossip, from a post on IORR from 'TeddyB1018'

In lieu of official news, I have assembled the following from a pretty much unimpeachable source, though things can always change:

In addition to the three Jagger has confirmed, "Following The River", "Plunder My Soul" and "Sophia Loren", look for the following to be on the new CD: "Scarlet" (Stones version, said to be amazing), "Loving Cup" (original version), "I Ain't Signifying" (aka Ain't Gonna Lie), "Aladdin Story" (with unbootlegged original Jagger vocal) and "Soul Survivor" (with original Keith vocal). They are looking to include at least some things that have not been bootlegged in these versions.

Don't look for these to be on this reissue: "Potted Shrimp" and "Highway Child". At least one of these has been determined to come from the Goats Head Sessions ("Potted Shrimp" I believe).

If this reissue works out, there is talk of following up with Goats Head Soup and, specifically, Some Girls

Ahhhh...getting better all the time. Thanks Gazza for the tidbit to keep us in suspense. Why bother with GHS as far as marketing. Go right to SG where there would be imho much more interest and based on boot availability maybe more to work with? Hell even re-do the cover and update the pics of the women. Joey as Paris Hilton??

Nico's refers to 'Scarlet' as unverified, and done in '74 (solo KR) and '76 (solo MJ).

Also unknown if it was the same song, or just the same title.

Scarlet...that rings a few bells, from the top of my head it was supposedly recorded with Jimmy Page, I had Montreux 1975 in mind, not 74 or 76, but it certainly has never been bootlegged.

Strange that "Potted Shrimp" should have been determined to be from the GHS sessions, I suppose the fact that these three instrumentals (Aladin Story, Potted Shrimp, Dancing in the Light) all came out on one boot (Trident Demos ?) and said to have been recorded at Elektra in 1972 doesn't mean they were recorded at the same time.

Interesting! Yes, 'good things come to those who wait' an old saying but hopefully true for us Stones-thirsty fans! Gimme little drink, from the loving vaults - just some more music, and we'll fall down, drunk, on newly released old songs! Those are the best songs, back from 'the days' when they were young and fresh. Not that they are unloved now, in their older years, but the 70's are the years we love the most!

Elektra, Hollywood late 1972 was what they were originally announced as when first bootlegged, but that wasnt the case. Not even sure they ever DID that session.

They're all on the 'Trident Mixes' tape which got leaked around that time. However, Aladdin Story and Potted Shrimp BOTH come from the same session in October 1970. Maybe Potted Shrimp got redone/finished for GHS and thats why it wasnt shortlisted? Very odd. Dancing in The Light comes from around 1970 as well.

You're right, I'd leant Elektra some credit since that's where they recorded/mixed Exile, but that was in November 1971 not November 1972.

I'd need to listen to them again but going by memory, I wonder if Potted Shrimp/Save Me don't have some similarities, hence the qualification as a GHS track.

But they why would they include Scarlet a song that Keith himself said was recorded with Jimmy Page at a later date. Incidentally I just found out that Scarlet is the name of Jimmy Page's daugter! There must some hard evidence for Nico to date the session precisely at 15/10/1974.

'Exile' was finished at Sunset Sound in Hollywood. When I started collecting studio sessions (in the early 80s), there was this 5-song tape of instrumentals which were supposedly from Elektra in Hollywood from around October-November 1972, ie just a few weeks before they went to Jamaica to record GHS. The tracks were Aladdin Story, Dancing In The Light, Potted Shrimp, Leather Jacket and an Untitled instrumental. They were also (I think) on the Trident Mixes/Trident Demos bootlegs, which was a bit confusing, as that included stuff from 1968-69 as well. They were also sometimes known as 'Bell Sound Demos'.

However, those songs were later attributed to other, earlier sessions, and the Stones dont appear to have recorded at Elektra other than doing some 'Let It Bleed' overdubs and mixes just before the '69 US Tour.

Felix Aeppli's Ultimate Guide explains the whole Trident/Bellsound/Elektra thing thus :

LATE 1972  TRIDENT MIXES, COMPILED BY THE ROLLING STONES (ABKCO / BELL
SOUND ACETATE , ALTERNATIVE TO MORE HOT ROCKS), Arrangement Jimmy Miller
A1 Jiving Sister Fanny
A2 I’m Going Down (Jagger, Richards, Taylor)

Cuts A2, C2, D3: Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, London, June 16--July 27, 1970.
Cuts A4, A6, B2, B3: Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, London, May 13-21, 1968.
Cuts A5, D2: Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, London, April 23, 1969.
Cuts B1, C4, D1: Recorded with RSM, Stargroves, Newbury and/or at Olympic Sound Studios, London,
October 21 onwards and November, 1970.
Cut C1: Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, London, June 24 or 28, 1968.
Cuts C3, D4: Recorded with RSM, Stargroves, Newbury, and/or at Olympic Sound Studios, London,
March-May, 1970.

NOTES: Circulated on a number of Bell Sound acetates; - A possible album that didn’t make
it into the shops, most likely due to the fact that too many titles assembled here were
semi-finished songs or rough tracks (apparently to be finished at Trident Studios,
London). The Rolling Stones’ TRIDENT MIXES thus would be not much more than a
fore-runner of the METAMORPHOSIS album, much in the style of Andrew L. Oldham’s
NECROPHILIA (see Entry 0.224A above) or Bill Wyman’s THE BLACK BOX (see
Entry 0.263). Fortunately, this fascinating compilation did see the light of day a couple of
years later, albeit in unofficial form. One of the few pressings of the rare 1972 Bell
Sound acetate got lost in the mail and amazingly turned up at a postal auction of lost
and unclaimed packages. And the lucky person who bought this unmarked lot had
bootleg connections. The rest, as they say, is history: THE TRIDENT MIXES bootleg
double album (K & S 072), following the exact track listing of the original acetate,
became an instant classic among collectors; -

Amazing, I had no idea that this Acetate that got lost in the mail was the source of the leak and Felix must have discovered that recently because I don't remember it from the 1982 (?) or 1995 editions of his "Heart of Stone" book !

Its not in the ones I have either (I've both of them too...couldnt believe I paid £65 in advance for a sessionography book way back in 1996 - which then wasnt published for another few months!)

I'd never read that story myself until a few weeks ago.

Yes, same here for that second edition, those were the days Wink Pretty hefty book but I remember being a bit disappointed as it had all the friggin' variations and remixes, something I have little interest in. I think I got his CD edition in 2003 too.

Funny thing is that in 1992 I was browsing through the 1982 edition at this great bookshop in London whose name escapes me now (off of Trafalgar Square I think) when I was acosted by an Austrian guy (Phillip ?) who was a big fan and left me his card, I think he posts at IORR from time to time.

Anyway it's good of Felix to have shared that story about the acetate !

I wonder if we'll ever get some good clean versions of "Dirty Work" cuts (i.e. Crushed Pearl). Doubt it.

It seems like an eternity waiting for this, but boy oh boy, it sounds fucking great!

And, per chance, could Taylor come back into the band? Why not? This could be another "audition" for him. At least they know he would be reliable on tour.

I'm just saying.

May '68 (see the track listing and recording dates for the Trident Mixes in my earlier post)

It's a 'Beggars Banquet' outtake, recorded during the same two week session which produced the released versions of 'Dear Doctor',  'Prodigal Son', 'Factory Girl', 'Stray Cat Blues', 'Street Fighting Man' as well as that glorious cover of 'Still a Fool'

I'm hoping they release this as a CD in mini-lp form and also on vinyl.

From : http://www.examiner.com/x-19248-Vintage-Rock-n-Roll-Examiner~y2010m2d25-Rolling-...

Quote:
This new compilation features 10 tracks originally recorded during the Exile era and only recently discovered while working on the reissue project. The unearthed tracks which include such titles as "Plundered My Soul," "Dancing in the Light," "Following the River" and "Pass The Wine" have undergone a unique evolution, while staying true to the essence of the 1972 album. Alternate versions of "Soul Survivor" and "Loving Cup" also are a part of the "Exile" bonus materials.

Quote:
The 10 unreleased tracks were produced by Jimmy Miller, The Glimmer Twins and Don Was.

Mick Taylor has been working in the studio in cooperation with Mick Jagger on this project.

I'm cautiously excited....
Is matt clifford going to add some piano fills to Let It Loose and Shine a Light? or maybe Bernard Fowler and Lisa Fischer can throw some nice background vocals to Loving Cup....
Only Don Was would allow Jagger to add new lyrics and vocals to some Exile-era tracks, finished or not.
I bet Was pisses in his pants everytime he reads, "Produced by The Glimmer Twins, Jimmy Miller and DON WAS!"
That's what those tracks will say isn't it? Jeez.
