Let it go. The song was already plenty gay even before the strings were added.

it's one of paulie's worst. the strings, however, make it almost as painful to behold as TTM's latest thread, "Rock n Roll Bunions".

yes indeed - the harder they come as they say and who would have thought it would come to this?? -

Gazza do you really think he's  going to face a lot of sexual threats inside?? - he's 60 odd at least  isn't he - not some doe-eyed 20 year old with a cute backside

i would have thought he will be getting heavied for $$$$ with threats of violence - in fact that's one way in which his life  on the inside will not be that much different from his life on the outside - he will try to remain as remote from society (in this case prison society) as possible and will spend whatever it takes to do so.

i am presuming, of course, that he will be able to use his wealth even tho he is inside - it happens here and I can't see why any other penal system in the world would be much different - there are always  ways and means

This from the BBC.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Verdict blights Spector's legacy

By Peter Bowes
BBC News, Los Angeles

The conviction of legendary record producer Phil Spector brings to an end a six-year legal drama that has both intrigued and dismayed the general public and music fans.

A jury in Los Angeles found him guilty of second-degree murder.

The victim, Lana Clarkson, was an out-of-work actress who was earning a living as a hostess at a Hollywood nightclub.

The pair met at the club in 2003 and went home to Spector's mansion on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Later that night, Ms Clarkson died when she was shot in the mouth.

The record producer said she killed herself while the prosecution insisted that Spector fired the fatal shot.

The verdict by a six-man, six-woman jury, follows a retrial that lasted over five months.

Spector's first trial, two years ago, ended with the jurors unable to reach a unanimous decision. They were split 10:2 in favour of a guilty verdict on the charge of murder.

The original jury was not given the option of voting on a manslaughter charge.

The retrial was conducted with little media attention. Much of the evidence was a repeat of the original trial, with the same cast of characters.

'Flaunted firearms'

He always flaunted firearms and he was always, for a little guy, a bit of a bully

Roy Trakin, HITS magazine

"This tale is so tawdry and so sordid and whatever happened that night… I think Phil Spector has been tainted with that brush at least for the rest of his life," says Roy Trakin, a pop culture critic and senior editor of HITS magazine.

"Hopefully in time we'll be able to better appreciate his work and what he did and separate it out," he adds.

Separating Spector's murder conviction from his lifetime of work in the music business is not easy.

Always a domineering figure, Spector had a reputation for being eccentric and intimidating.

In 1964 the American author and journalist Tom Wolfe famously called him "the first tycoon of teen".

"He always flaunted firearms and he was always, for a little guy, a bit of a bully and that was certainly something that followed him around," says Mr Trakin.

"On the other side those who were part of the inner circle, friends of Phil, have talked of his loyalty and his sense of humour."

Musical pioneer

The sound of bands like the Ronettes suited the technology of the day

Spector's musical legacy is undisputed. He developed a sound that still influences groups today.

He described his songs as "little symphonies for the kids", and was a groundbreaking force in popular music.

He produced records for some of the biggest names in popular music since the early 1960s.

His hits include the Ronettes' Be My Baby, You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' by the Righteous Brothers' and Ike and Tina Turner's River Deep - Mountain High. He produced The Beatles' Let It Be album and John Lennon's classic single, Imagine.

Spector pioneered the art of multiple track recordings using small armies of musicians - pianists, guitarists and drummers - to produce the "Wall of Sound".

It was a big, dense sound that was particularly well suited to the technology of the day - transistor radios and early car radios.

For music fans, there is no silver lining to this tragic episode in Spector's life

"Phil has always been a proponent of the mono sound," explains Mr Trakin.

"That great big sound that came out of the tiny little speakers on which you listened to the music back in the early 60s."

Spector is also credited with being one of the first figures in the music business to flaunt his grandiose persona.

"He was the first to start wearing his hair longer, wearing the shades in public, to start really carrying on that larger-than-life image which was adopted by everyone from the Beatles through to Prince and up until the modern day," says Mr Trakin.

But for most fans, nothing can redeem this tragic episode in Spector's life. His musical legacy will be forever overshadowed by the murder conviction.

The record producer will be sentenced on 29 May and faces between 18 years and life in prison. His lawyers have said they intend to launch an appeal.

July 26, 2009 --

CHARLES Manson -- a third-rate musician before he turned homicidal cult leader -- still has twisted delusions about becoming a pop star and wants to consult with fellow jailbird Phil Spector.

Rachelle Spector says her legendary music-producer hubby, now serving 19 years to life for the fatal shooting of actress Lara Clarkson, was recently transferred to Corcoran State Prison in central California, where Manson -- who masterminded the savage Tate/LaBianca killings 40 years ago -- is housed in a separate wing.

Soon after he settled in, "a guard brought Philip a note from Manson, who said he wanted him to come over to his [lockup]. He said he considers Philip the greatest producer who ever lived," Rachelle told Page Six. "It was creepy. Philip didn't respond."

Before his slaughter spree, Manson tried to launch a music career by hanging out with Doris Day's record-producer son, Terry Melcher, and Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys ended up recording two Manson songs -- one eerily titled "Cease To Exist," which the group changed to "Never Learn To Love." Melcher enraged Manson by severing ties and the maniac sent his gang to kill Melcher, whose former address was where Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate were living. The maniacs ended up killing Tate and four others on Aug. 9, 1969. Manson's old self-recorded songs have ended up on albums complied by collectors of the macabre and he's even taped new ones in prison.

Spector's producing credits include the hits "Be My Baby," "Da Doo Ron Ron" and "Unchained Melody," and The Beatles' "Let It Be" album.

"I think Manson wants to glean some musical advice from Phil, who was a '60s music god with his 'Wall of Sound,' " Spector publicist Hal Lifson told us. "But Phil's like, 'I used to pick up the phone and it was John Lennon or Celine Dion or Tina Turner, and now Charles Manson is trying to get a hold of me."

>Soon after he settled in, "a guard brought Philip a note from Manson, who said he wanted him to come over to his [lockup]. He said he considers Philip the greatest producer who ever lived," Rachelle told Page Six. "It was creepy. Philip didn't respond." <

Still deluded. No parole for Charlie.

You know that old saying about how “four walls do not a prison make?” Nor can prison silence Phil Spector.

The legendary music producer, currently serving a 19-year prison sentence for murdering actress Lana Clarkson, has been writing to musician / music journalist / friend Steve Escobar about his life behind bars.

What’s Spector been up to since his incarceration earlier this year at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison at Corcoran, Calif.? According to Spector’s letters to Escobar, he is working “to get a better prison with people more like myself in it during the appeal process instead of all those lowlife scumbags, gangsters and Manson types. … They’d kill you here for a 39-cent bag of soup.”

But not every prison day is a bad one for Spector. The record producer says his spirits are up because his wife, Rachelle, visits him twice a week, even though the journey from the couple’s Alhambra home to the prison is a 400-mile round trip.

“She’s a real trouper,” Spector wrote. “All in all, it’s like a dream come true having her by my side again.”

Spector’s especially happy that his wife brings him packaged food so he doesn’t have to go to the prison’s dining hall and eat his meals while surrounded by other convicts.

“I know it is a chance to get out of my cell going to the dining room but the less I see of the inmates, the better and safer I feel,” Spector said. “Even though 24/7 lockdown in a 3’ by 7’ cell is very tough.”

Spector, known for producing classic hits such as “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” and “Unchained Melody” for the Righteous Brothers, as well as working with major music acts like The Beatles, Ike & Tina Turner and Leonard Cohen, was tried twice for the 2003 murder of actress Clarkson.

The first resulted in a mistrial after the jury couldn’t return a unanimous verdict, while the second ended with a second-degree murder conviction.
