J. Geils Band Reunion?

Posted on Wednesday April 1, 2009 at 09:12 AM

The J. Geils Band has only two dates on the books, but could there be a reunion tour in the works?

With minimal, a couple of dates recently appeared on venue schedules for one of the hardest working bands ever to walk onstage. Throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s the J. Geils Band was always a party favorite. Fronted by rapid-talking Peter Wolf and featuring tasty guitar licks by founder J. Geils, the Boston-based band always audiences on their feet with stompers like “Must Have Got Lost,” “Give It To Me” and “Southside Shuffle.”

Now it looks as if the J. Geils Band is back. Having already done a “reunion show” at Boston’s House Of Blues in February, the band has scheduled another show for Beantown’s HOB – April 28.

However, the upcoming Boston show takes place four days after the band plays another reunion of sorts – Detroit’s Fillmore on April 24.

The Detroit show represents somewhat of a homecoming for the J. Geils Band. During the early 1970s the band hit it big in the Motor City long before they would gather any real national momentum. The band’s Full House album, recorded live at Detroit’s Grande Ballroom, shows the band at its hungriest as it belts out numbers like “Detroit Breakdown,” “Pack Fair and Square,” and Magic Dick’s “Whammer Jammer,” undeniably one of the best rock-harmonica solos of all time.

The group eventually recorded two more live albums in Detroit – Blow Your Face Out, and Showtime. The last time the band played the Detroit area was during another reunion show – New Year’s Eve 1999.

Do the two April dates mean a reunion is coming?

Band insiders told Pollstar the two shows currently scheduled are the only confirmed dates, and no concrete plans, either for a tour or for just a few more shows, have been planned. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

They were always a big draw in Detroit or Boston. But their reunion tour in 1999 sputtered to a halt prematurely with some shed shows selling as few as 1,000 tickets.

A theatre tour should be able to do well. Smaller venues suits them best anyway.
