I played the album today, not bad at all.
Back To Zero is the worst song recorded by the boys (along with SOL, Neocon...) and Winning Ugly sucks... but the rest of the album rocks like hell.

Ironic that its regarded as a latter-day album, yet it was actually released at pretty much exactly the half way point in their recording career to date - and theyve only made four albums since.  you made a grown man cry

For all it's faults, it marked the end of an era. The last album with Stu and the final one before they allowed themselves to morph into the Cohlisaurus we know today.

I suppose you could categorise the band's history into three convenient eras. The period up to Undercover in 1983 when they were truly a rock n roll band with a sense of purpose and direction. The period from 1989 to today when they became more of a corporate entity than anything else. The 1984-88 years could be seen as a period when they spent a few years evaluating their future and making tentative steps at envisioning a scenario where they ceased to exist as a band (German's book basically states that for a couple of years they effectively DID disband into 5 pieces from an administrative perspective). Dirty Work is the product of a band that existed in name only. Most of the songs are written by Keith & Woody, Jagger's involvement was minimal, Charlie was often absent as his demons were taking over and the whole album resembles a musical equivalent of a patchwork quilt with various guest musicians and roadies chipping in to get it shipshape.

It shows, although not always in a bad way. The tension and edginess absolutely drips through the grooves.

I SKIPPED SCHOOL THE DAY THAT DIRTY WORK WAS RELEASED AND HAD A FRIEND DRIVE ME TO THE NEAREST RECORD STORE (I WAS 15), WAITED IN THE PARKING LOT UNTIL THEY OPENED AND BOUGHT THE FIRST COPIES AS THEY WERE LITERALLY UNLOADING THEM OUT OF THE BOXES.

SPENT THE REST OF THE SCHOOL DAY HANGING OUT BY THE LAKE WITH MY FRIENDS CRANKING A CASSETTE OF DIRTY WORK OUT OF BOOM BOX OVER AND OVER. IT WAS THE SHIT!!! I WAS CONVINCED AND SWOERE THAT DAY THAT 'FIGHT' WAS THE SECOND COMING OF JJ FLASH AND THAT THE ALBUM WOULD GO DOWN IN R&R HISTORY AS ONE OF THEIR GREATEST WORKS. 'ONE HIT TO THE BODY' WOULD BE REGARDED AS THE GREATEST ROCK SONG EVER WRITTEN AND SURPLANT 'STAIRWAY' ON ALL THOSE STUPID AORR RADIO COUNTDOWNS

WE DRANK BEERS THAT DAY AND DISCUSSED HOW WE WOULD SPEND THE SUMMER TRAVELING FROM SHOW TO SHOW ON THE STONES DIRTY WORK TOUR. GRAND PLANS. LITTLE DID WE KNOW.

LIFE WAS, INDEED, GOOD THAT DAY.

A VERY FOND MEMORY OF MY VERY EARLY STONESIAN OBSESSION

I'VE BEEN A FULL FLEDGED STONES FREAK EVER SINCE.

Whats with the caps? Is it a tribute to Perks for starting the thread?

There was a bus strike here the day that album was released. I always insisted on buying Stones albums on the day they came out, so I ended up leaving work early to walk 5 miles into the city centre to buy it, and then 3 miles home again.

I thought for some time afterwards that "One Hit" was one of the greatest things I'd ever heard from the Stones. It's sounded a bit dated since and my enthusiasm for it has faded a little (maybe once I found out that the brilliant lead guitar on it wasn't by Keith or Woody but by Jimmy Page) but every once in a while (like just now) I put it on and it still goes 'straight to the mark'

It really is a lifelong affliction

I went to the mall the other day and parked further away. As I was walking up I spotted a group of young guys in a car jamming.  I walked by and I heard Back to zero playing and I smelled the aroma of weed. I gave the guys the thumbs up and they shot me a peace sign.
Better seen on weed!

I used to, and still do, love Winning Ugly.  Truth hurts sometimes.  Obviously the album sucks by Stones' standards, but only "Hold Back" and "Back to Zero" are bad, the rest are ok to good.

Riffy's favorite tune off this album?

"Hold Barack".

one hit, had it with you, harlem shuffle (for the drumming) and the title track are my favs, but as Gazza stated the band tensions run through the entire album.

I'd been going out with a girl for a couple of weeks when this came out and she was suprised that I didn't want to see her for "a couple of days" while I listened to a new album. After 23 years ( married for 19) she's kind of accepted my obsession !

I REALLY LIKE THE OPENING MOMENTS OF "SLEEP TONIGHT"

VERY CHILLING WITH THE GOSPEL SINGERS AND THE WAY THE KEYS AND CHARLIES DRUMS PLAY OFF EACH OTHER

ONE OF THE STONES BEST SONG INTROS IMO
