OK, so I'm watering some plants I've got hanging in the trees outside my place, and this bird I didn't see takes off from just a foot or so away from me, scared the piss out of me.
She then starts flying over me, thought I was going to get dumped on but I guess she just didn't have it in her, so to speak.
This is one very pissed off bird, flying around, screeching very loud.
Turns out the lazy bitch laid a couple of eggs in one of my plant baskets rather than building a nest higher up in the tree, only I didn't know this before dumping a half-gallon of cold water over the eggs.

Mama's returned to keep her eggs warm, but I wonder if that much cold water can do any damage to the eggs?  :funny

Yeah, but the water from the faucet was COLD, like the experience I get sometimes when I'm too close to the toilet.  really?

if you can climb up on a ladder and take some pictures of these eggs during incubation and post them i would love to see them.  what kind of bird is it?  she probably loves the nice soft dirt.

Aaargh! I don't have a digital camera. I'll see if I can use a neighbor's.

Don't know what kind of bird it is, except that it's brown in color. Two eggs are in the nest and are about the size of a pecan, maybe a bit bigger, white in color.

it sounds like you will have a few days to find a camera from somewhere.  i would go for it because this is probably a once in a lifetime chance.  congradulations.....enjoy them.  maybe you could put up a birdfeeder for her too.

i had a friend a couple of years ago who had one of those oven gloves, for bbq'ing, hanging from her porch handrail and a bird laid eggs in it  everytime i peeked in at them they would open their mouthes for food.  it was the coolest thing....i named them the glove birds.

Well, I broke down and ordered my own camera from J&R, been wanting one anyway but it's not due to arrive until tomorrow.

In the meantime, the eggs hatched this morning.
Took a pic with my ancient cell phone. Here it is:

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s209/leepullen/Pic202312-1.jpgt=1237132817

It's hard to make out, but the fuzzy spot in the center of the twigs are two young hatchlings.

My brand new camera arrived today, and I was anxious to get some good pics of mama & the youngins.
After getting home from work, I set up a ladder and saw mama staring back at me from a nearby branch.
When I was high enough to see down in the nest, I found nothing there.
Later, my neighbor from across the courtyard told me she was watching the nest from her balcony this afternoon.
While mama was out, presumably getting food, a couple of crows swooped in and snatched the young birds.  you made a grown man cry
It was a good Monday until now.

She's an artist, an animal lover, and she wanted me to help her rig an umbrella over the nest the other day when it was raining.
It took some convincing that the umbrella wasn't really necessary. :smile

Thanks for the good words guys.

It may seem silly to some, but I watched mama take care of that nest, right outside my front door, every day for a week. Who knows exactly how long she'd been there.
I obviously knew something was wrong when I realized mama was standing over an empty nest, and it made me sick when I learned what happened.  Cry

As per Platter's request, pictures of the scene of the crime:

I used a website that helps identify species by narrowing down specific features and came up with this: http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/682/_/Eastern_Phoebe.aspx
The bird in the drawing looks very similar to mine, except mine had more light-brown coloring.
I last saw mama bird on the evening of the snatching. She hasn't been around since.

My courtyard in the French Quarter, New Orleans:
The hanging basket in the upper-left of the trees is where mama built her nest.
I never saw a daddy bird. Perhaps he's a crackhead on welfare.
My neighbor's balcony, where she witnessed the bird-snatching from, is hidden by the trees on the right.

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s209/leepullen/IMG_0001.jpgt=1238357968

Here's the nest. Two weeks after the snatching the twigs mama placed are still there.
I'm going to clear out those twigs after posting this and water that plant for the first time in nearly a month.

http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s209/leepullen/IMG_0002.jpgt=1238358846

Like someone said: "Maybe next year!"

Honestly, I don't know.
I share the courtyard with my neighbor, and it's hers.
Only the hanging plants are mine, and an old girlfriend of mine started those.
I know about as much of plants as I do birds.   :smile
