neil diamond appreciation thread

didn't care for his performance at the grammys, too much emphasis on the schlock for me,
but i grew up with neil diamond's music...
i haven't actually listented to this stuff since i was a kid, but through youtube, im finding that its still magic.
i'm a stones fan for life and they supercede everyone else, but there was a time, before the stones when i was a kid, that other artists had an impact on my love of music.
this is one of mine, and i was wondering who else people listened to before the the stones came into their lives...
just looking at these old album covers take me back to my older cousin's bedroom.

i actually like neil diamond, he has the best baratone voice out there.  his older classic songs are fantastic.

he was a bit sketchy to begin sweet caroline at the grammies but i soon forgot about it as he started strutting the stage and then into the audience.  he's a classic.

Shit!

i know what you mean tex

back in the  60s as a kid i loved all those Bacharch/David songs Dionne Warwicke's in particular - and i was about 10 or so I guess when I heard  Richard Harris doing MacArthur Park - i am like WTF??

my mum tells me the first song on the radio that i sang along to, at about age two, was Jim Reeves of all people

I can hear it now "Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone..."

as for Neil - I'm a Believer and Solitary Man i like in particular

I've never liked him; that being said, he's done some (annoyingly) catchy tunes on occasion.

All the great Rock & roll pioneers, Elvis, Little Richard, Jerry Lee, Chuck Berry, Everly Bros. Bo Diddley, Ricky Nelson, & a lot of others but just before The Stones got well 'known, The Beatles, how could anybody not be effected by them in '64, they practically took over every radio station in Canada & America.

that's the truth,
if you really love music, it is what it is.....
i hate this whole compartmentalization....
we lose our ability to be moved by things when we start treating music as some lesson on cool.

my mom lovcd elvis, buddy holly so i had that too.....and my dad had his johnny cash and hank williams...
whatever makes you move, sing, or feel is good music.

A lot of these artists have good/great songs. Neil Diamond, Gordon Lightfoot.....

I love Nick Drake.

Before the Stones, there were the great 50's acts--Elvis, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent....so many more. And I also grew up with what my Dad listened to, and played on the piano....Gershwin, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson....Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald. Yeah, I don't really compartmentalize either. I never liked "country music", but I surely appreciate people like Hank Williams and George Jones....

When the Brit. Invasion hit, that was pretty much "it" for me, though. Smiley
