Birds hit an engine & a A320 crashed near the USS Intrepid. This is a flight I've taken numerous times.

US Airways Plane Crashes Into Hudson River
Plane Lands Upright In Water Near USS Intrepid
Bird Strike Said To Have Caused Both Engines To Malfunction
Witness: 'It Wasn't Wobbling, There Was No Smoke'

A U.S. Airways airplane has crashed into the Hudson River, CBS 2 has learned. The plane appears to be in one piece and passengers are being evaucated by rescue teams.

Officials tell CBS 2 the airplane is Flight 1549, an Airbus a320 that took off from La Guardia Aiport and headed to Charlotte, N.C. There are reports that there were about 60 people on board. The plane seats about 120 passengers. It went down around 3:30 p.m.

Passengers could be seen standing on the wing of the plane and entering a rescue boat.

"It was just going down further and further and further and then all of a sudden it was gone," a witness named Peter told CBS 2. "I'm shaking, it was crazy. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. There was nothing wrong with the plane, it wasn't wobbling, there was no smoke coming out of it!"

There are reports that a bird strike may have caused the plane to go down, meaning a bird may have entered the engine, causing a malfunction. The bird strike apparently disabled both engines.

City officials have called a massive casualty emergency, though it's not yet known if there are any deaths.

There is no word on injuries to passengers.

The plane is floating upright in the water near the USS Intrepid. Temperatures at the time of the crash in the city were just about 20 degrees, with the water temperature likely much colder.

According to Dr. Max Gomez, a person in 40 degree water will likely lose consciousness after 30 minutes.

Incredible. It's 20 degrees out there.

Amazing picture. Those poor people standing out on a wing in the freezing cold in the middle of a river. Reminds me a little of the plane that crashed into the Potomac in DC a few years ago. Luckily, this doesn't seem as bad.

Yeah, even you can figure that out huh?......Thank goodness for that crack staff of NYC air traffic controllers to gude the plane away from the birds. Interesting stuff Ronnie!

Feel good story of the damn year thus far.
The pilot landed that plane with NO ENGINES. Surrounded by Manhattan and the bridges, the potential loss of life here could have been catastrophic.

What happens? EVERYBODY walks away safe.
The Pilot is a hero in my book and the rescue workers too.

Just goes to show what good can come to pass when everyone comes together

Bravo!!!!

Just so everyone knows: Birds fly around planes all the time. There's not much ATC can do except let plane crews know if there's a flock of birds in the area. I'm sure our esteemed fellow poster thought he was being amusing (as if!) but all I ask is that he think before posting about things well above his pay grade.

If the geese are not found, they have dissapeared.
This is due to their Al Qaeda training.

Yeah I was on my way into NYC and this story broke and it was all over the news. Heading into NY from NJ you have to cross the Hudson river, so there I was right in the midst of all this hectic intensity! Every cop car, ambulance, and firetruck in NYC and NJ surrounding towns were blasting sirens and flashing lights from 4 PM till midnight! They really were all over this right from the start! Amazing! Lots of overtime for these people!

It was a real miracle how nobody got hurt except one person who broke their legs, I hope it wasn't Canadian Geese, I don't know that much about Geese, but they all seem to come from Canada, it could have been seagulls (A flock of seagulls) or Starlings, at Airports in Canada, they have warning shots to get Birds out of the way before a flight takes off, also Dogs to scare them away, that Pilot was a real Hero.

I saw some film of the plane actually landing in the water, very cool. At my club we have problems with the geese swimming in the pools at night and shitting all over the place. They have to trap them due to environmental restictions and then they fly back because they like the pool.

My golf course keeps a border collie on site to chase them away.
They are poop machines with wings.

Where did you see footage of it landing in the water? I was wondering if that was caught on video. I haven't seen it.

ha ha yeah. Some of the hotels string up fishing line above the pools and patios and the geese/seagull radar steers away from it.

Most of you know that I am an avid fisherman and sometimes hunter.   I am all for protecting our wildlife.  But the geese population is way out of control.  The are a danger to humans and themselves.   The federal goverment controls hunting seasons and bag limits on geese.  They have extended the hunting season and raised the bag limits on geese, but their population continues to grow.

am I the only one who saw this as a missed opportunity for the Stones to have announced the tour and performed on top of the plane as it was carted away?
